"Welcome to UNWE! Welcome to Maxima Aula!” – those were the words the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov greeted the students, lecturers and guests at the opening of the New Academic Year 2021/2022. The national, European and student anthems "Gaudeamus igitur" set the beginning of the solemn ceremony at the largest economic university in Southeast Europe. The Minister of Education and Science Corr. Member Prof. D.Sc./Chemistry/ Nikolay Denkov had also come to open the academic year.

"Challenges and changes are part of life and we must strive to get the best out of them. I want to thank all of you, lecturers and students, who have successfully managed with the distance learning. Traditionally, on this day we mention the famous and successful people who graduated from our university, as you can see in the cabinet "Yanev 2" there are six ministers who have studied or taught at the UNWE. But today my speech is different, because you are the great heroes. Despite the difficult educational situation, you managed to fight for your worthy place at the UNWE", addressed the Rector to the newly admitted students.

The Minister of Education and Science Corr. Member Prof. D.Sc./Chemistry/ Nikolay Denkov expressed thankfulness for the invitation to attend the first day of the new academic year in one of the most respected universities in Bulgaria. "My greeting is mostly aimed at students, especially freshmen because this day is for them - a day when they start a new stage in their lives. The coronavirus crisis and the changes that we experienced is an illustration of a historical truth that we must all keep in mind. The development of societies and states always goes through smaller and bigger crises. The countries that manage to overcome them, to use them in the best way to move forward, are the ones which make the right decisions. I say all this because here are the future managers and people who will make the decisions in Bulgaria", declared the Minister.

"This school year is significant as it is the first of the second century. There are lots of evidences that it will be successful. For 100 years our university has been called to catch up with what other universities having more years of existence have achieved", said Prof. Dr. Borislav Borisov.

Prof. Dr. Lalko Dulevsky, Chairman of the UNWE General Assembly, reminded that in 1920, when our university was established, there had also been a pandemic, at that time from the Spanish flu, after the severe wars the coutry in practice had been in financial bankruptcy. "Then the founders of the university together with Prof. Dr. Stefan Bobchev had adopted not accidentally the motto "Spirit Makes the Power". I believe that this motto was adopted because they realized that the spirit will restore Bulgaria and this spirit is in the enlightenment, knowledge and science. In this regard let us always remember the message of the founder Prof. Dr. Stefan Bobchev that we must believe and love our work as we love and must love our country. A tribute to the great minds and patriots who had been the visionaries and taught their students in visionary.”

"I am pleased to welcome the freshmen to the 101st academic year. The Student Council celebrates its 30th Anniversary and it is the oldest student organization that protects and upholds the rights and interests of students. I am glad that over the last year despite the difficult situation, the Student Council managed to be one of the few active councils and to hold the planned events", declared the Chairman of the Student Council Angel Stoykov.

The Chairman of the NRSC (National Representation of Student Councils) Daniel Parushev noted: “Respect for all that the UNWE lecturers have done. In less than 48 hours all of you have adapted extremely quickly to the new online environment. Congratulations to the Rector's leadership, to the entire academic staff, and in particular to the Rector of the university because in order to develop an institution, a university, you must certainly have good management, you must have foresight for development, and you do not lack that here", said in his greeting the Chairman of NRSC.

Simona Nikova from Burgas, a first-year student in speciality International Economic Relations with English Language Teaching, welcomed her colleagues and lecturers declaring that it is a great honour and challenge for her to become part of the family of the University of National and World Economy. "As of today it becomes our second home, “our university” and that means a lot", pointed out Simona.

The opening of the new academic year was attended by rectors, vice-rectors and chairmen of the General Assembly and prominent lecturers over the years - Prof. Mihail Dinev, Prof. Velcho Stoyanov, Prof. Lyuben Karanikolov as well as representatives of the Academic Council, the Vice-Rectors Prof. Dr. Miroslava Rakovska, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mihail Musov, Prof. Dr. Tsvetana Stoyanova, the Assistant Rector Prof. D.Sc. Kiril Stoychev, Prof. Dr. Daniela Feschiyan, Chairman of the UNWE Control Council, Deans, Heads of Departments, Chief Secretaries, the Chairman of the National Representation of Student Councils Daniel Parushev, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ing. Lilyana Valcheva, Chairman of the UNWE Trustees Council, rectors of higher schools, partners from employers' organizations, Trustees Council members.

The Minister of Education Prof. D.Sc. /Chemistry/ Nikolay Denkov wrote a dedication in the Golden Book of UNWE.

Traditionally, students and lecturers honored the memory of the founder and first Rector of UNWE Prof. Stefan Bobchev.
