Finance and Accountancy Faculty Celebrated Its Diamond Anniversary

By a solemn plenary session at the Maxima Aula was celebrated the 60^th Anniversary from the foundation of the Finance and Accountancy Faculty. The International Scientific Conference on the Crisis and Economic Growth was also devoted to the jubilee. The jubilee celebration and the International Forum gathered together dozens of representatives of the financial science and practice, academic community, guests from authoritative universities and institutions from Italy, Russia, Germany, Ukraine, Moldova, etc.

The plenary session was opened by Prof. Dr. Snezhana Basheva, Dean of the Finance and Accountancy Faculty and it was led by Prof. Dr. Margarita Alexandrova, Vice-Dean of the Faculty. 

By the national anthem was announced the beginning of the solemn session.

A greeting speech on behalf of the Rector Prof. D. Sc. (Econ.) Statty Stattev was exposed by Prof. Dr. Veselka Pavlova, Vice-Rector on Education in the Educational Qualification Degree of Master and Distance Learning. In it was pointed out that the last six decades were a period of academic growth and dedication of several generations whose activity was an emanation of Bulgarian science, academic conscience and ethics. In the greeting address was also outlined that the Finance and Accountancy Faculty would always be at the leading positions and would stay related to the university academic family as it was before. Prof. Pavlova bestowed to Prof. Basheva the Honorary Mark of the Rector “for high achievements in the academic and scientific research activity of the Finance and Accountancy Faculty and on the occasion of the 60^th Anniversary of its foundation”.

On behalf of Simeon Djankov, Minister of Finance, a greeting speech was exposed by Svilena Simeonova, Director of the Internal Control Directorate at the Ministry of Finance. In it was outlined that there were names which have made enduring marks in the financial theory and practice and the Faculty was defined as “an important center for implementation of the relation science-practice” and “a center for education of competitive Bachelors and Masters of Science”.  

A trade mark of high quality was called the 60 years old university by Prof. Valery Dimitrov, Chairman of the Bulgarian National Audit office. He pointed out that the university alumni were very important, excellently prepared professionals for work at the National Audit Office and most of the employees at it were graduated from the Finance and Accountancy Faculty. He also defined the jubilee as “a diamond anniversary” and bestowed the Plaque of the National Audit Office.

Violina Marinova, Chairwoman of the Management Board, Chief Executive Director of DSK Bank and member of the Trustees Council of UNWE greeted the Faculty as she outlined that the celebration of the Anniversary was marked not by the accompaniment of "holiday fanfare", but by an important international scientific conference. Marinova described the role of the banks for the business as a partnership and pointed out that both areas counted on the alumni of the Finance and Accountancy Faculty. “Bulgaria needs the highly qualified professionals of the Faculty”, concluded Violina Marinova.

Prof. Gianfranco Capodaglio from the University of Bologna, Italy, Chairman of the Italian Accounting Committee expressed his gratefulness to the Rector of UNWE Prof. Statty Stattev for the signed memorandum of cooperation between both universities and said that he was confident it would be realized a useful academic interaction.

As a Chairman of the Union of Accountants in Bulgaria Prof. D.Sc.(Econ.) Ivan Dushanov greeted the Finance and Accountancy Faculty and outlined that it was “a label born with proud by its alumni”.  Boyko Kostov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants declared he was proud of being the Faculty alumnus and over his career he had always applied the knowledge acquired at the Faculty. Prof. D. Sc. (Econ.) Vyacheslav Sokolov from the Saint Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance, Russia, defined UNWE as “his second alma mater” and the relation between both universities - as important and perspective. A leading Faculty in the UNWE structure, high quality of education, highly qualified academic body, capable students and knowledgeable Doctoral students – these words were among the assessments in the greeting speech of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rumyana Lilova, Dean of the Finance Faculty of Dimitar Tsenov Academy of Economics, Svishtov. She bestowed a Plaque to the jubilee-faculty on behalf of the Academy of Svishtov.

Greeting speeches and greeting addresses to the Finance and Accountancy Faculty were also exposed by Prof. Dr. Tsvetka Stoencheva, Vice-Dean of the Management and Administration Faculty, Vanya Doneva, Chairwoman of the Commission for Public Oversight of Statutory Auditors, by the Economic University of Varna, Faculties and Departments of UNWE.

Prof. Dr. Snezhana Basheva, Dean of the Finance and Accountancy Faculty made in her report a detailed historical inquiry and an academic estimation of the Faculty activity. In her report she examined by numbers and facts the periods of development over the six decades, pointed out the leading names, emphasized on the international collaboration, scientific activities, new Master`s programmes, the cooperation with the Nottingham Trent University, UK, etc. Now in the specialities of the three Departments are educated totally 3572 students, pointed out the Dean. “We, people, must be the change we want to see in the world’, cited in conclusion Prof. Basheva the thought of Mahatma Gandhi.

A report for the state and academic activity of the Department of Accountancy and Analysis was exposed by its Head Prof. Dr. Stoyan Stoyanov, Chairman of the General Assembly of UNWE. Prof. Dr. Ognyan Simeonov, Head of the Department of Financial Control and First Vice-Rector on Education in the Educational Qualification Degree of Bachelor spoke about the activity of his Department. The state and priorities of the Finance Department were described by its Head Assoc. Prof. Stoyan Alexandrov.

Prof. D.Sc. (Econ.) Veltcho Stoyanov read a report about the huge scientific inheritance of Prof. Dr. Minko Rusev on the occasion of the 100^th Anniversary from his birth. Prof. D. Sc. (Econ.) Ivan Dushanov spoke about the academic activity and scientific achievements of Prof. D. Sc. (Econ.) Dimitar Yordanov.

The Jubilee Scientific Conference on the Crisis and Economic Growth continued its work by sessions on sections. Within the framework of celebrations for the 60^th Anniversary from the foundation of the Faculty and by the Students Council of UNWE as a co-organizer was carried out also the Eight International Scientific Conference of Young Researchers on The Economy of Bulgaria – Contemporary Challenges in Macroeconomic Policy, Financial Sector and Real Business.
