Master`s Degree Students from the Only One in the World International Programme in Nuclear Security Defended Their Theses

Students from ten countries - Bulgaria, Jordan, Nigeria, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Serbia, Sudan, Iraq and Rwanda completed their studies in the only one in the world International Master's Degree Programme in Nuclear Security which is held in English and combines theoretical and practical classes in compliance with the IAEA requirements, including 22 courses, laboratory exercises, technical visits, simulations, etc.

The consecutive graduating class of the Programme defended Master`s theses in the Small Conference Hall and online in the presence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia in Bulgaria H. E.  Zeljko Jovic, the Honorary Consul of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Bulgaria H. E. Dr. Hassan Barmawi, the Counselor of the Embassy of Iraq in Bulgaria Mr. Haidar Alburiahi, Mr. Emil Bonev, expert in nuclear security and safety, lecturer in the Programme, the Rector of the UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, Head of the National and Regional Security Department, which leads the Programme, Chief Assist. Dr. Ekaterina Bogomilova, Director of the Programme, lecturers, Doctoral students and undergraduates from the Department.

The Rector of the UNWE opened the event by pointing out that the International Master's Degree Programme in Nuclear Security was launched in 2015 with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency /IAEA/ in Vienna. "The consecutive graduating class of the Programme studied in a difficult period for the world like the Covid-19 pandemic but it overcame all the trials, visa and travel problems and managed to reach the final stage - the defence of Master's theses. I wish the graduating Master`s degree students good luck!", said Prof. Dimitrov and presented the composition of the jury for the defence.

The defence of the Master's degree theses was held in strict observance of the procedural regulations. The members of jury were from the National and Regional Security Department: Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, Prof. Dr. Tsvetan Tsvetkov, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Konstantin Pudin, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, until recently Permanent Representative of the Republic of Bulgaria to the UN, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe /OSCE/ and International Organizations in Vienna, Austria, Chief Assist. Dr. Ekaterina Bogomilova and the expert in Nuclear Security Mr. Emil Bonev, lecturer in the Programme.

Each graduate presented a short exposé, a presentation on the topic of its thesis. Traditionally, the successful defence of Master's degree theses was celebrated with a short party.


The International Master's Degree Programme in Nuclear Security is developed and implemented within the framework of the Cooperation Agreement between the UNWE and the International Atomic Energy Agency /IAEA/. The Head of the Master's degree programme is Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, Rector of UNWE and Head of the National and Regional Security Department and the Director is Chief Assist. Dr. Ekaterina Bogomilova. The objective of the International Master's Degree Programme is to prepare highly qualified management staff for the demands of the nuclear security sector.

The Programme started in 2015 and its first class graduated in 2017. UNWE with the assistance and financial support of the IAEA continues to train students in the International Master's Degree Programme in Nuclear Security and most of them are from Africa and Asia.

The training is held by lecturers from the National and Regional Security Department and other UNWE, Departments as well as from St. Climent Ohridsky University of Sofia, researchers from Acad. Angel Balevsky Institute of Metal Science, Equipment and Technology with the Center of Hydroaerodynamics at BAS, experts from the Nuclear Regulation Agency, Technical University - Sofia, several foreign universities. Methodological assistance is provided by the IAEA and the International Nuclear Security Education Network /INSEN/ - the UNWE has been its member since 2014.
