In honour of the 103 Anniversary of our university it was organized the ENGAGE.EU International Online Speed Chess Tournament. Four teams from four universities - University of Mannheim, Germany, LUISS University, Italy, University Toulouse Capitole, France and UNWE, Bulgaria - part of the ENGAGE.EU European Alliance competed in the Tournament.

For the third consecutive year the UNWE hosted the Tournament which was held in the online platform "lichess" and organized by the Physical Education and Sport Department.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Michail Musov, Vice-Rector for Research and International Affairs /on the right/ and Georgy Nikolaev, Tournament judge, opened the competition

Our university team successfully defended its first prize in chess. In the individual competition the champion of the Tournament was the representative of the University of Mannheim, Germany - Jan Schopp. Second and third place won two students from the UNWE - respectively Kristian Slaveykov and Nikolay Boshnakov.

The Rector of UNWE gave the award to the winner of the second place - Kristian Slaveikov, student of UNWE

"I am very happy that the UNWE team is the winner of the Chess Tournament and our students have won second and third place in the individual ranking. Congratulations! I wish you to achieve success also in world tournaments! Bulgaria has traditions with world chess champions. This game is a very important element of our activity, because our first priority has always been to develop the sport. This year we broke the pattern of celebrating our anniversary an in addition to the academic celebration, we included two sports initiatives - a 103 km marathon and a chess tournament. And we won!", said the Rector of UNWE at the awarding ceremony.

The Tournament was held in compliance with all rules. The ranking of the teams depends on the number of points scored in the game, and in case of equal score it is taken into account to determine the winner the following: 1) The total number of points scored in the matches; 2) The results of teams in the same point group depending on the points from the matches; 3) The Zoneborn-Berger point system for team tournaments; 4) The Berlin system. Even if the last time-break cannot determine the winner between two teams, the one who played on the first board with the black pieces takes the first place.
