UNWE Graduate is the New IMF Managing Director

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kristalina Georgieva, graduate of UNWE, was elected as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It is the highest position that has ever been occupied by a Bulgarian in the global institution.

Georgieva has graduated the speciality Political Economy and Sociology in 1976 and since 1977 to 1991 she has been a lecturer at the UNWE. In the period she has also been a research fellow at the London School of Economics and for a year she has been a guest-professor at the University of the South Pacific (USP) in Fiji as well as at the Australian National University (ANU). In 1986 she becomes a Ph.D. in Economics, dissertation thesis: Environmental Policy and Economic Growth in the USA over the 70s and early 80s. In 1991 she becomes an Associate Professor. In the same year she has also completed her post graduate qualification from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) conducting research in the field of environmental policy. She delivers lectures on transition economies and she is a consultant on environmental policy in Eastern Europe.

She is an author of more than 100 publications on the issues of environmental economics as well as an author of a textbook in microeconomics.

Assoc. Prof. Georgieva was a member of the UNWE Trustees Council and then she was also Chairwoman of the European Consultative Council at UNWE Trustees Council.
