The UNWE team achieved an exceptional success in the most prestigious Competition in Investment Law in the world - Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court – it occupied the fifth place (it was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the champion team in the Competition but it had the highest score among the other eliminated teams).

It has been the third participation of our students in the Competition traditionally held at Goethe University in Frankfurt.

Members of the UNWE team are: Alexander Petsoransky – fifth year student; Marian Kanev – fifth year student; Stoyan Penev – second year student and Trayan Kosev – fifth year student. The coach of the team is Anton Petrov, alumnus of UNWE (in the picture below).

In the Competition participated 66 teams from all over the world and among them were the teams of the most prestigious universities usually occupying the first place in the international competitions in law. The interest in the Competition was huge. For example, applications for participation in the Competition were submitted by 21 Indian teams (from universities where education is in the English language). It had to be held national rounds for choosing the best six teams.

Our team succeeded to overcome the group stage of the Competition ranking at the eight place by its score, then reached the second round of the Competition and won against the Indian team from the Law Faculty of West Bengal.

After it was announced at the official ceremony that our team had ranked for the quarterfinals the attention was focused on it – the surprise was great because nobody expected that it could win a victory over one of the most prestigious Law Faculties in the world.

In the quarterfinals our team had to compete against the champion team which took the first place by its score – the team of the private German Law Faculty Bucerius.

After our students in the ranking were the teams of the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, France, Spain, Russia, etc.

In the ceremony on awarding our team was given the prize for The Best East European Team (it includes also the teams from Russia which traditionally are very strong) as well as a special invitation for a private lesson in interrogation of witness in arbitration procedure. It was held on 13 March at the office of the international lawyers company McDermott Will & Emery and the lecturing team included partners from various companies in the field of international arbitration as McDermott Will & Emery, Lalive, Noerr, Lindahl, AlixPartners, Alvarez & Marsal.

The UNWE team participated in two professional seminars dedicated to the actual issues of international arbitration. The first seminar was organized by the International Chamber of Commerce and it was held at the local office of Allen & Overy, one of the largest international companies and the second seminar organized by the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce was held at Goethe University in Frankfurt.

“On behalf of the team I would like to thank to the Rector of UNWE Prof. D.Sc.(Econ.) Statty Stattev because without his support we wouldn`t achieve this great success and wouldn`t have the opportunity to participate in this international Forum”, declared the coach Anton Petrov.
