Round Table Conference on The Occasion of The World Statistics Day

Round Table Conference on the World Statistics Day was organized by the Statistics and Econometrics Department and the National Statistical Institute (NSI). The event was held at the Scientific Councils Hall of UNWE. It was attended by the Rector of the university Prof. D.Sc.(Econ.) Statty Stattev, the Chairman of NSI Sergey Tsvetarski, Prof. Dr. Veselka Pavlova, Vice-Rector of UNWE and Head of the Statistics and Econometrics Department, Prof. Dr. Valentin Goev, Vice-Rector of UNWE, Dr. Bogdan Bogdanov, Deputy Chairman of the National Statistical Institute, Prof. Dr. Kamelia Stefanova, Dean of the Applied Informatics and Statistics Faculty, Prof. D.Sc.(Math.) Nikolay Bozhinov, Vice-Dean and Head of the Mathematics Department, lecturers, experts from the NSI, graduated Bachelors and Masters from the speciality and students.

The Forum is a joint initiative of the UNWE and NSI and it is the consecutive evidence for the effective agreement of cooperation between both institutions, pointed out Prof. Dr. Veselka Pavlova. She outlined that the Round Table Conference is a specific youth forum because the participants are Doctoral students and undergraduates from the speciality Statistics and Econometrics who had made their professional choice in that important and responsible field of career. Prof. Pavlova also pointed out that the Round Table Conference devoted to the World Statistics Day is a Forum which would discuss some actual issues related to the Bulgarian and European statistical system and the connection between the theory and practice.

In Scientific Councils Hall

The UNWE is glad of being an organizer and host of the national Bulgarian initiative on the occasion of the World Statistics Day, pointed out in his welcoming speech the Rector Prof. D.Sc.(Econ.) Statty Stattev. He outlined that Bulgaria is one of 55 countries co-authors of the UN resolution officially designating 20 October as a public holiday devoted to the main values – the honesty and professionalism.

At our university the statistics has been studied since the beginning of its establishment and namely for 95 years, specified Prof. Stattev. Statistics and Econometrics Department is one of the leading ones at the UNWE and it provides the best education in this field in the country, emphasized the Rector illustrating the fact with eloquent examples. He reminded that two of the Vice-Rectors of the university had graduated from the speciality Statistics and Econometrics and most of the leading experts in our country had also been graduates of the Department.

Prof. Stattev also outlined the importance of the Agreement concluded a year ago between the UNWE and NSI. It is one of the few agreements which began working since the moment of its signing, said the Rector and featured also some of the future parameters for cooperation. The combination of the university higher education and science with the governmental institution provides a wide range for work, pointed out Prof. Stattev.

Thank you for being a host of this important meeting which is a proof for the possibilities of our partnership, pointed out Sergey Tsvetarsky who is also a graduate of the Department. The UNWE is the forge of professionals – from the government and business to all the public sectors, outlined the Chairman of NSI.

Sergey Tsvetarsky is expressing his thankfulness to the UNWE for being a host of the Forum.

Sergey Tsvetarsky emphasized on the fact that in the UN resolution is said: “Acknowledging the fundamental importance of sustainable national statistical capacity to produce reliable and timely statistics and indicators measuring a country`s progress bearing in mind the critical role of high quality official statistical information in analysis and informed policy decision-making in support of sustainable development at national, regional and international level”. He also explained the motto of the day in which is said: “Better Data. Better Lives” as a necessity of “good data quality”. We, the statisticians are adopted as people having “a third eye” because we are able to see and analyze the information, said also Tsvetarsky and pointed out some immediate objectives: the recovery of the Statisticians Association and the conclusion of the European project for incorporation of quality management system.

During the Round Table Conference were showed two films on the topic. The participants discussed the issues of Bulgarian and European statistical system.
