The World-Renowned Professor of Journalism John Pavlik Delivered Lecture at Our University
The world-renowned American Professor of Journalism John Pavlik delivered a lecture at the UNWE. The event was organized by the Media and Public Communications Department.
The moderator of the event Assist. Dr. Vesislava Antonova, a well-known journalist and lecturer at the Media and Public Communications Department, presented Prof. John Pavlik. He is the author of a number of studies on the impact of new technologies on journalism, media and society. He is currently a lecturer at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, USA. For three decades, he has beem member of the jury of the Emmy Awards for Excellence in Television News and Documentary. He is part of the Advisory Board of CNN.com.
"It is an honour for me to welcome Prof. John Pavlik at our university. He is in Bulgaria for the first time and chose to deliver a lecture at the UNWE so I would like to express my thankfulness for that", said the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and emphasized: "Our university tries to provide a platform for such discussions related to the challenges we face with the entry of digitalization and the use of artificial intelligence. Interesting topics that we also explore in the field of public communications as well as in the field of business and political studies. Last year, together with the Media and Public Communications Department, which I would like to mention has been awarded the status of UNESCO Chair in Media and Information Literacy and Cultural Policies for Sustainable Development, we held a discussion in the field of media literacy with all leading Bulgarian media".
"We have a very great competitive advantage not only because we are a UNESCO Chair in Media and Information Literacy and Cultural Policies for Sustainable Development since 2022 but also because we are able to educate students of journalism and media at the most prestigious business university not only in Bulgaria but also in the region. This provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to study in disciplines that are not only journalistic but also economic which is extremely important. In the course of their education we also pay attention to the artificial intelligence, digitalization and digital competences", said the Head of the Media and Public Communications Department Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Nikolova.
Richard Pinkham, Press Attaché of the US Embassy in Bulgaria, expressed his contentment with the opportunity to attend the lecture of Prof. Pavlik at the UNWE. He outlined that the cooperation with the universities and discussion of media-related issues is important, as the next generation of journalists is prepared at the University. According to him, the lecture of Prof. Pavlik will be useful for both students and lecturers because it will present the experience of the American academic community in the education in journalism.
Prof. John Pavlik expressed his thankfulness for the opportunity to deliver a lecture at the UNWE. In his presentation on the Improvement of the News: Considering the Implications of Artificial Intelligence for Education in Journalism 2025 he gave concrete examples of how the artificial intelligence entries the media education and highlighted the impact that the new technologies have on journalism, media and society.

In turn, the Media and Public Communications Department gave as present to Prof. Pavlik the book Time Shelter by the writer Georgy Gospodinov, Booker Prize winner for 2023, with a dedication by the author.
