Roundtable Conference on The Crisis in Syria

The crisis in Syria was entered in the agenda of the academic community. The participants in the Roundtable Conference organized by the International Relations Department discussed on the Crisis in Syria and Its Impact on the New International Order.

The Forum was opened by Prof. Dr. Antoaneta Vasileva, Dean of the International Economics and Politics Department. She outlined the actuality of the topic and expressed her hope that the participants in the Roundtable Conference would stand out different points of view, make profound analyses and discuss effectively on the issue.

The crisis in Syria needs to be examined in terms of security, international law, geopolitics. The crisis have also to be studied in terms of its participants – direct and indirect – most of all USA, Russia and others such as Turkey and Iran, outlined the guidelines in the work of the Forum Assoc. Prof. Dr. Georgi Tchankov, Scientific Secretary of the International Relations Department.

The crisis in Syria occupied the diplomatic scene and it is one of the most actual topics of discussion – a challenge for the international community, summarized Petko Doynov, Director of the Policy of Security Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In his statement he emphasized on the development of the events in Syria, the most affected by the crisis, refugees and the adequacy of the actions of the Bulgarian state institutions.

Prof. Dr. Dinko Dinkov from the International Relations Department made an overview of the events, the driving interests, the special role of the USA and Russia as well as the regional factors Iran, Turkey and Israel. He examined the events in terms of so-called Arab Spring, explained the relations between the global and regional players, clarified the positive effects of the resolution of the Security Council, commented the destruction of Syria's chemical arsenal, etc. We need to start acting as serious players in the modern world, said about the Bulgarian position on the issue of Syria Prof. Dinkov.
