Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kristalina Georgieva Is Reelected for a Second Term As IMF Managing Director

The Managing Director of International Monetary Fund /IMF/ Kristalina Georgieva will continue to head the financial institution after she was reelected for a second five-year term.

Kristalina Georgieva has become the IMF Managaing Director in 2019. She holds a PhD in Economics from our university and she is an Associate Professor at UNWE,where she has taught since 1977 to 1993. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kristalina Georgieva is the author and co-author of over 100 publications on macro and microeconomics and has contributed to numerous academic and scientific studies worldwide.

As recognition of work and merits of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kristalina Georgieva in May 2022 the Rector of our university Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov awarded to her the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa of UNWE.

The UNWE has honored Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kristalina Georgieva with the honorary scientific title as an internationally recognized leader and visionary in the development of the global economy and the stabilization of financial institutions, human capital and social changes aimed at improving people's lives, for the great practical value of her academic and scientific achievements in the field of economics, climate change and sustainable development on a global scale as well as for her contribution to overcoming humanitarian crises and disasters through prevention and rapid operational actions.



The new term will begin on 1 October 2024. Last month the European Union Finance Ministers endorsed Kristalina Georgieva for a new five-year term as the IMF Managing Director. Traditionally, the European countries recommend the Managing Director of the IMF and the United States recommend the Head of the World Bank.

Assoc. Prof.  Dr. Kristalina Georgieva is the second woman who heads the IMF.
