Lecturer from the UNWE Participated in a Meeting of the UN High Level Group on Partnership for Sustainable Development

The President of the National Statistical Institute /NSI/ Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atanas Atanasov, who is a lecturer at the UNWE, took part in the 33rd meeting of the High Level Group on Partnership, Coordination and Capacity Building on Statistics for the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which was held on February 25th at the UN Headquarters in New York. Assoc. Prof. Atanasov is in the United States as one of five representatives in the Group for the North America and Europe region and Bulgaria's representative to the 55th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission UN /UNSC/, the highest body in the international statistical system where global statistical standards are reviewed and approved.

During the meeting the Group discussed the work programme for the current year as well as the report on its activities in 2023, which is to be presented to the UNSC. Among the topics discussed were also the preparations for the next UN World Data Forum, which will be held in the periof 11 -14 November 2024 in Medellín, Colombia, the necessity to revise the Cape Town Global Action Plan adopted during the first UN World Data Forum in January 2017 and global initiatives related to the data and statistics financing, etc.

The High Level Group on Partnership, Coordination, and Capacity Building for Statistics was established in 2015 and its main task is to provide strategic guidance on the process of statistical monitoring and reporting on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The 55th session of the UN Statistical Commission, in which the President of the NSI Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov participated as a representative of Bulgaria, was held from 27 February to 1 March 2024. During the session topics related to the basic principles of official statistics, national accounts, social and demographic statistics, population and housing censuses, big data, and others were discussed.
