Qinghai is a province situated in the western part of Central China with an area of 721,000 km² and the city of Xining as its administrative center. Qinghai Province is located in the eastern part of one of the largest mountain systems in Asia, the Kun Lun, whose main mountain range reaches a height of 6-7 thousand meters. The climate is distinctly continental with cool summers and harsh winters. Rainfalls varied between 300 and 500 mm per year so that semi-deserts and deserts are widespread in the lowlands. The major Asian rivers - the Yangtze, the Huanghe and the Mekong - have their source here. There are also numerous drainless lakes, the largest of which gave the province its name. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway is one of the most ambitious projects in the history of the People's Republic of China. It was completed in 2005 and connects Tibet with the rest of China via Qinghai.
