Controversial Final at the XXVI Tennis Tournament for the Cup of the Rector of UNWE

The final of the XXVI Tennis Tournament for the Cup of the Rector of UNWE was held in Bonsist Sports Complex. The competition was organized by St. George the Victorious Academic Sports Club /ASC/ and the Physical Education and Sports Department.

At the beginning of the awarding ceremony for the tournament winners the participants paid tribute to the memory of Sen. Lect. Georgy Stoykovsky - Merited Master of Sports and the first European champion for Bulgaria in the discipline of triple jump in Budapest in 1966. He was also a longstanding lecturer in the Physical Education and Sports Department.

The big winners in the competition for couples are Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivan Stoilov, Head of the Physical Education and Sports Department and Nikolay Staykov, Director External Facilities at Bonsist Sports Complex. The second-place positions were occupied by Prof. Dr. Dimitar Nenkov from the Finance Department and Chief Assist. Dr. Mitko Hitov from the Marketing and Strategic Planning Department.

After a contested final the trophy in the individual competition for men was won by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivan Stoilov. The second place won Chief Assist. Dr. Mitko Hitov from the Marketing and Strategic Planning Department.

In the individual competition for women Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ralitsa Arsova, Scientific Secretary of the Physical Education and Sports Department, won the first place. The second place was occupied by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Markova from the Accounting and Analysis Department and the third place won Sen. Lect. Dr. Ekaterina Tosheva from the Physical Education and Sports Department.

"I want to congratulate all of you as winners in this competition because I know it's not easy to balance your professional duties and to have time for such tournaments. It's wonderful to see such a great interest in the Tournament, and what's even more important is the participation itself, as it fosters the spirit of our University", addressed the participants in the Tournament the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov. He also outlined: "As Rector`s leadership, we encourage sports and allocate sufficient attention to the development of sports facilities. We will continue to actively work in this direction. At the end of the month, representatives from Taiwan will visit us because with we have reached an agreement with them and they will make a donation for energy efficiency at Bonsist Sports Complex. We do all of this because the sport enjoys significant popularity among the students and lecturers and we support you in developing your sporting skills".

The Chairman of St. George the Victorious Academic Sports Club Prof. Dr. Georgy Yankov welcomed the attendees and highlighted that the tradition continues with this XXVI Tournament. Prof. Yankov noted that following the idea of the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov a biographical sketch about Sen. Lect. Georgy Stoykovsky is being prepared and it will be included in the upcoming encyclopedia titled Prominent Figures Financiers, Managers, Business Leaders, Famous Sports Figures - Professors and Alumni of UNWE.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivan Stoilov expressed gratitude to St. George the Victorious Academic Sports Club and to the Rector Prof. Dimitrov for their support. He also expressed thankfulness to Prof. Dr. Spas Stavrev and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marko Dimitrov for their excellent organization of the competition and added: "I wish the competitors new sports victories. I am glad that together we contribute to the development of this Tournament and keep the tradition alive".

The Cup for Fair Play which has become a traditional part of the ceremony was awarded to Sen. Lect. Master of Sports Kiril Germanliev.
