The Minister of Justice Assoc. Prof. Atanas Slavov Met with the Rector Prof. Dimitrov, the Dean of the Law Faculty and the UNWE Law Team

At the invitation of the Minister of Justice Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atanas Slavov the Rector of the UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, the Dean of the Law Faculty Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zahary Tormanov and the UNWE Law Team visited the Ministry of Justice. The meeting was on the occasion of the third place won by our Law Team at Helga Pedersen International Human Rights Moot Court Competition.

The Minister awarded Honorary plaques to the competitors from the UNWE Law Team An-Nikol Voynska, Elina Kostadinova, Ileya Rashid, Rositsa Toneva and to their coaches Martina Bogdanova and Hristo Peshev. The UNWE students also received badges and the book Law of the European Convention on Human Rights - the work of leading scholars in the field and practicing jurists.

The coach Martina Bogdanova also received her award in person, the prize of the other coach Hristo Peshev will be given to him additionally.

The Rector Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov gave as present to Minister Atanas Slavov a book about Prof. Stefan Bobchev, jurist, founder of the UWNE and Minister of Justice of Eastern Rumelia /1884-1885/.

"I greet you for the great success you have achieved. It is very important for you as future lawyers and for the university where you study. It is also important for the state because the way forward include not only to build up good careers but also to be at a level so that your voice is heard, to defend causes and values", addressed to the students from the UNWE the Minister of Justice Atanas Slavov. He expressed his thankfulness for the opportunity to personally meet the prize winners and wished them to keep the bar high.

"I am very happy that the Minister of Justice appreciates the merits of our students who occupied the third place in the largest English-speaking human rights competition in the world and beat dozens of teams from universities in other member states of the Council of Europe. We, as a university, strive to maintain a high level of education in all disciplines and are extremely happy when the efforts and knowledge of our students receive well-deserved awards", said the Rector of the UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov.

The Dean of the Law Faculty Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zahary Tormanov expressed thankfulness to the Minister for appreciating the merits of the UNWE Law Team. "These young people are our beautiful and intelligent face of the legal community to the European family. There is a worthy trail of good lawyers in our university starting with its founder in 1920 Prof. Stefan Bobchev who was also Minister of Justice and going to the younger generations who winning international awards today", added Prof. Tormanov.

The students were also given the impressive opportunity to see lively the State Seal which is kept in the office of the Minister of Justice. The seal is affixed to laws, decrees and decisions before they are sent for publication in the State Gazette. And some students dared to try the Minister's chair.

Before the meeting with Minister Slavov the Deputy Minister Emil Dechev took a short historical review with the students near the portraits of the Ministers of Justice of Bulgaria. The meeting was also attended by the Head of the Minister`s Political Office Dr. Borislav Ganchev, Maria Dimitrova and Raina Georgieva from the Directorate Legal Representation of the Republic of Bulgaria before the European Court of Human Rights.


Helga Pedersen Moot Court Competition is the largest English-language human rights competition in the world involving teams from universities in all member states of the Council of Europe.

The UNWE team successfully reached the semi-finals of the prestigious international competition sharing third place with the Oxford team. The latest edition of the competition has as its main theme the protection against discrimination and the effective exercise of rights arising from the protection against interference with the complainant's private and family life.

The competition is organized by the European Law Students Association /ELSA/ and held under the patronage of the Council of Europe.
