A two-day International Polish-Bulgarian Scientific Session organized jointly by the Law faculties of the University of Szczecin, Poland and the UNWE on the Influence of Culture and Law of the Roman Empire in Bulgaria was held at our university.

The Scientific Forum is part of the celebrations dedicated to the 170th Anniversary of the birth of Prof. Stefan Bobchev - lawyer and lecturer, founder and first Rector of the Free University of Political and Economic Sciences - predecessor of UNWE.

The scientific session was solemnly opened by Assoc. Dr. Mihail Musov, Vice-Rector for Research and International Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Diana Marinova from the Law Faculty, Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, Rector of UNWE and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Konstantin Tanev from the Law Faculty

"I am delighted to open this session devoted on such interesting topic as the influence of culture and law of the Roman Empire in Bulgaria. There can be no lack of influence, these lands were part of the Roman Empire for centuries and artifacts from that time can be found at every turn. Especially in Sofia, Serdica at that time, where several Roman emperors were born and which for some time was one of the capitals of the Roman Empire. It was here that Emperor Galerius, born in Serdica, first recognized Christianity in 311. Here the Emperor Constantine the Great said the famous words: "Serdica is my Rome". I am glad that this Forum is organized with the participation of the students - Polish and ours. We encourage the initiatives of young people and we will be glad to hear their scientific reports about the distant past that has influenced the culture and law in Bulgaria", these were the words the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov opened the Forum.

The Vice Rector for Research and International Affairs Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mihail Musov emphasized that it is an extremely important initiative, especially in the European Year of Skills. "By taking part today you develop some of the most important skills - communication, teamwork, presentation skills, etc. In addition, such events with the active participation of students contribute to the internationalization of both universities and the confirmation of their contribution to societal development", said Assoc. Prof. Musov.

"We are proud to host this session. I hope that the scientific theses that will be presented during the Forum will contribute to find out the specificity of the influence of Roman law on Bulgarian law", said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Diana Marinova from the Law Faculty.

Dr. Maciej Kubala from the Law Faculty of University of Szczecin, Poland, said they were impressed by the many Roman remains in Sofia during their visit last year. "Then at the Law Faculty we decided to do a research on the relation between the Bulgarian culture and the Roman law. This topic is still unexplored and it is of great interest to legal circles, so we rely heavily on the valuable and critical comments of our Bulgarian colleagues".

At the beginning of the session Prof. Dr. Maciej Kubala from the Law Faculty of University of Szczecin, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Konstantin Tanev and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Diana Marinova from the UNWE presented their scientific papers.

During the two-day session undergraduates and Doctoral students from both universities presented their theses on the topic. Part of the session was the reading of scientific theses by the PhD students within the framework of the Doctoral School of Law which is held for the third time at the Law Faculty of UNWE.
