UNWE Will Host the Pythagoras Awards for Contribution to Science

The University of National and World Economy has been selected by the Ministry of Education and Science to host the Pythagoras Awards for Contribution to Science. The awarding ceremony will be held in Maxima Aula on 19 May 2023.

The initiative to hold the awarding ceremony in higher education institutions and scientific organisations starts this year. The objective is to promote the achievements of Bulgarian scientists, was announced by the Ministry of Education.

"The Pythagoras Awards are an important incentive for scientists in Bulgaria. Through our scientific research activities we also fulfil an important societal function - to contribute to tackling the global challenges of our time and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It is important to have forums where we measure up and where we receive recognition for our efforts. I am happy that we will host Pythagoras Awards for 2023", said the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov.

According to the Ministry of Education and Science, a record number of scientists - 51 - applied for the Pythagoras Awards in the current year. Last year there were 34 nominees. Three professors compete for the award for overall scientific contribution.

The greatest number- 16 - are the applicants for the award for an established scientist in the field of natural sciences and engineering, and 8 - for the award for a young scientist in the same field. There are seven applicants in each of following categories - Young and Distinguished Scientist in Life Sciences category and Medicine category. In the field of social sciences and humanities there are seven applicants for the Established Scientist Award and three - for the Young Scientist Award.

Nominations for participation in the competition were submitted by scientific organizations, universities, collectives of scientists as well as individuals. A scientific jury will review and rank the nominees according to the achievements of the researchers.

The winners will be aawarded certificates, plaques and cash prizes. Traditionally, the ceremony is broadcast on Bulgarian National Television on 24 May.
