Kiril Valchev began his lecture with an introduction about the establishment of news agencies, as the Bulgarian News Agency is one of the first agencies established in 1898. He explained the main functions of BTA which are to collect information from abroad and provide it to the Bulgarian media, to transmit information abroad about Bulgaria in English and to collect information from Bulgaria about Bulgaria. "That is why the BTA has correspondents in all large cities, and for the past two years we have also created two new specialized editorial offices - Culture, Education and Science and Economy", pointed out Mr. Valchev.

Regarding his topic about The Future of the News he emphasized on the great change that has taken place since the advent of the Internet. Before the Internet, news agencies sold news to the media, "whoever has money buys information" but through the free access to all information, the business model changes. "Media has long played the role of schools unlike schools which provide knowledge of yesterday, media provides knowledge for today. News must be real, it must be verifiable, it must have a source and this principle is observed at the BTA", said Mr. Valchev.

He also examined the great danger of creating news from non-media without checks and a clear source and without responsibility.

"The future of the news, and this future has already come, is in the open access news which must be real, must bring knowledge for today, carrying the experience of the past, and must unite us as a community", summarized the topic Mr. Valchev.
