Curios facts about the National Enlighteners Day

For the first time the National Enlighteners Day was celebrated in 1909 at a festival in Plovdiv. However, its official celebration began a few years later. In 1922 the Minister of National Enlightening Stoyan Omarchevsky from the government of Stamboliysky, on the initiative of a group of intellectuals, submitted a proposal for declaring the 1st November as Day of Bulgarian National Enlighteners. Thus, the date is defined as "a holiday of the Bulgarian Enlighteners, a day to pay tribute to the memory of the great Bulgarians, distant and close builders of modern Bulgaria". The celebration of the holiday lasted until 1945. Then the National Enlighteners Day was canceled by the communist government. Nevertheless, many settlements in Bulgaria continue to celebrate the holiday unofficially. After a long interraption the tradition to pay tribute to the national enlighteners was renewed on 28 October 1992. Through the amendments to the Labor Code the 1st November was officially declared as Day of the National Enlighteners and a holiday for all schools in the country. The idea for its restoration came from Prof. Petar Konstantinov, Chairman of the National Association "MATI BOLGARIA".
