The Second Alumni of the International Master Programme in Nuclear Security Graduated

By the sounds of the national, European and the student anthem „Gaudeamus igitur“ was opened the official ceremony on awarding diplomas to the second alumni graduated the International Master Programme in Nuclear Security – the only one in the world (in the pictures below).

Among the guests were the Rector Prof. D.Sc.(Econ.) Statty Stattev, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Stela Raleva, Vice Rector for Education in the EQD of Master and Distance Learning, Mr. Juan Carlos Lentijo, Deputy Director General of IAEA and Head of the Nuclear Safety and Security Department, Mr. Dmitrii Nikonov from the IAEA Nuclear Security Directorate, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Bulgaria to the UN, OSCE and the other international organizations in Vienna, Austria, Ambassadors of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Sudan to Bulgaria – H.E. Mrs Zakia El Midaoui and H.E. Ilham Ibrahim Mohamed Ahmed, representatives of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA), BAS Institutes, energy experts, lecturers, etc.

In the opening of the ceremony Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov greeted the alumni and said words of special thankfulness to all Bulgarian and international institutions, lecturers and officials contributed to the implementation of the Master Programme making efforts for the realization of its objective – to prepare highly qualified managerial personnel at middle management level for the nuclear industry.

The Rector Prof. Stattev expressed his contentment with the realization of the Programme and the opportunity to greet for a second consecutive year students graduated the Master Programme in Nuclear Security at the UNWE – the largest and the oldest university in Southeastern Europe. He emphasized on the huge efforts made over the years for the successful development of the Programme.

Mr. Juan Carlos Lentijo expressed his gratitude to the Rector Prof. Statty Stattev, to Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov as well as to all people and institutions contributed to the implementation of the Programe and determined the preparation of personnel in the field of nuclear security as a very respectful task. He assured that the IAEA would continue supporting the Master Programme.

The Master graduates were also greeted by Mr. Stanislav Georgiev, Executive Secretary of the Bulgarian Atomic Forum Bulatom (in the picture below).

I have graduated from the UNWE so I am sure that the preparation you have obtained at the university is a good foundation and guarantee for your future successful professional realization, pointed out Mr. Dimitar Galabov, Executive Director of Sutherland Bulgaria. He defined the fruitful cooperation between the UNWE and Sutherland Bulgaria as an evidence for the strong relation between the education and the business (in the picture below).

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov expressed his contentment with the fact that the second alumni of the Programme had graduated – an evidence for a successfully implemented project gathering students from all over the world. He greeted the alumni on behalf of the Minister of Energy Temenuzhka Petkova, graduate of UNWE and said words of thankfulness for the support to the Rector, to Prof. Dimitrov, IAEA and all institutions contributed to the realization of the Programme.

The International Master Programme in Nuclear Security is worked out and implemented in the frameworks of the Agreement of Cooperation between the UNWE and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed by the Rector Prof. D.Sc.(Econ.) Statty Stattev and the Director General of IAEA Yukiya Amano during his visit in Sofia in June 2014. Head of the Master Programme is Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, Dean of the Economics of Infrastructure Faculty and Head of the National and Regional Security Department and its Coordinator is Chief Assist. Dr. Ekaterina Bogomilova, Scientific Secretary of the Department.

In 2017 students from six countries – Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Zambia, Jordan, Nigeria, Lebanon for the first time graduated their education on the Programme. It is carried out in the English language and it is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions in compliance with the IAEA requirements. It includes 22 disciplines, laboratory sessions, technical visits, simulation training, etc. Due to the assistance and financial support by the IAEA the UNWE continues educating students on the Master Programme in Nuclear Security and more of them are from Africa and Asia.

The education is implemented by lecturers from the National and Regional Security Department and other UNWE Departments, St. Climent Ohridsky University of Sofia, scientists from Acad. A. Balevski Institute of Metal Science, Equipment, and Technologies with Center for Hydro- and Aerodynamics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – (IMSETHC-BAS), experts from the Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA), Technical University of Sofia, several international universities. Methodical assistance is provided by the IAEA and the International Nuclear Security Education Network (INSEN), UNWE is its member since 2014.
