Public Lecture by H.E. Emma Hopkins, Ambassador of the UK to Bulgaria

EU – UK Relations after Brexit was the topic of the public lecture which H. E. Emma Hopkins, Ambassador of the UK to Bulgaria delivered to lecturers and students in the Large Conference Hall of UNWE. Her visit was at the invitation of the International Relations Research Student Association (IRRSA).

H.E. Emma Hopkins pointed out the major reasons about Brexit and outlined that the UK had made a vision about its future in the globalizing world. The democratic deficit, increasing migration, populism and nationalism in the EU do not overlap the democratic principle of sovereignty on which the UK has built its multicultural society. The priority of the country is to cope with the treats and challenges of the modern world keeping the principles of democracy, respect for human rights and ensuring the security and sovereignty, said the Ambassador.

The lecturer paid a special attention to the tasks facing the UK during the two years procedure on Brexit: the transformation of legislation, new trade agreements, establishment of new international relations observing the democratic principle. She clarified that the UK had opened the door to the world and “Brexit does not mean nationalism, it means internationalism”.

At the lecture attended also Assoc. Prof. Dr. Milanka Slavova, Vice Rector for Education in the EQD of Bachelor and Lifelong Learning

The lecture provoked a great interest among students. H.E. Emma Hopkins answered comprehensively to their questions.
