The World Famous Economists Prof. Gregory Mankiw Was Awarded A Distinction by The Rector of UNWE

The Rector of UNWE Prof. D.Sc.(Econ.) Statty Stattev awarded the statuette of Prof. Stephan Bobchev – Founder and First Rector of UNWE to Prof. Gregory Mankiw for his scientific and lecturing activity and for his contribution to the field of economics and economic policy. The statuette was bestowed on the world famous economist by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Paskal Zhelev, Secretary General for International Cooperation and lecturer at the International Economic Relations and Business during his visit in the USA. Prof. Mankiw expressed his thankfulness for the award and desire to visit the UNWE.

Prof. Mankiw is an author of one of the most popular textbooks - Principles of Economics (total print of two millions translated in 20 languages and reprinted in the current year for the eighth time) which is read by millions of students all over the world including at the UNWE. He is a lecturer at the Economics Department of Harvard University. His research interest is in the field of fiscal policy and economic growth. Since 2003 to 2005 Prof. Mankiw has been a Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) to the President of the USA. Since 2007 he has annually written an economic column for the New York Times. In 2011 according to the survey among professors he has ranked at the second place as the most preferred alive economist under 60 years old (after Paul Krugman and before Daron Acemoglu). In the ranking of RePEc for March of the current year on the grounds of academic publications, citations and indexes related to them Prof. Mankiw has occupied a place among the 50 most authoritative economists in the world (of nearly 50 000 ones).  

Assoc. Prof. Zhelev delivered a lecture on the Competitiveness of Post Socialist Countries in the Global Economy – the Bulgarian Case to students and lecturers from the Economics Department of the Texas Christian University. He answered lots of questions related to the advantages and disadvantages of the EU membership, issues of planned economy and transition to market economy, Bulgarian experience with the Monetary Council and perspectives for joining the Eurozone, opportunities of enhancing the industrial competitiveness of our country, etc.

During the lecture

Assoc. Prof. Zhelev met with Assoc. Prof. Sandra Kalahan, Director of the International Activity Division and Assoc. Prof. Kiril Toshkov, Head of the Economics Department. He discussed with them the opportunities of bilateral cooperation with the UNWE in the R&D, students and lecturers exchange.

In the USA Assoc. Prof. Zhelev took part in the 58th Annual Congress of the International Research Association in Baltimore – the most important World Congress in the field of international relations and international political economy. In the Congress participated nearly 6000 scientists from more than 80 countries. In the section entitled European Union and Energy in a Changing world Assoc. Prof. Zhelev presented a joint report with Prof. Boyka Stefanova, lecturer at the University of Texas in San Antonio and Fulbright scholarship student at the UNWE in 2016. The report on the Regional Society Versus Regional Geopolitics: Security Dynamics in the EU Energy Union had an excellent response.
