The 96th Academic Year Was Solemnly Opened

“Today we open the 96th academic year of the University of National and World Economy - with smiles, hopes, expectations, with willingness and readiness to give worthy and reasonable answers to challenges. We have proved that when we are together we are successful because for us the higher education and science are a cause, mission and fate. In our noble deed, in our daily work for our favourite university we have always treated our glorious academic traditions with great respect and striving of being leaders in the Bulgarian higher education and science”.

These were the words the Rector of the university Prof. D.Sc.(Econ.) Statty Stattev opened the new academic year. At the official ceremony in Maxima Aula attended lecturers and students and at the presidium had their seats Prof. Stattev, Prof. Lalko Dulevsky, Chairman of the General Assembly of UNWE, Prof. Blagoy Kolev, Professor Emeritus of UNWE – Ombudsman of the university, Denis Dimitrov, Chairman of the Student Council. The guest for the event was Maya Manolova, Ombudsman of the Republic of Bulgaria, graduate of the UNWE. The official ceremony began with the sounds of the national, European and student anthem "Gaudeamus igitur".

“Due to our joint efforts the UNWE is the forming block for the Bulgarian intellectual potential, supporter of the national spiritual identity with great authority, high reputation and confidence”, outlined in his speech the Rector. He greeted the first year students with the words: “Welcome to the UNWE” and pointed out that it had been their start to the high professionalism and successful career. Prof. Stattev specified that their way would be difficult, full of reading and intellectual efforts, acquisition of knowledge and improvement of social skills. “The World Bank research for Bulgaria indicates explicitly that in our country people having higher education have better skills which provide them better positions at the labour market, higher income, more stable employment and higher chances for career growth and professional development”, outlined the Rector. The UNWE is the place where in the next four years you will obtain the skills which will become the foundation of your professionalism and high social status as in the county as in the frameworks of the global labour market, explicitly said Prof. Stattev.

The Rector greeted the first year students for their desire to study at the UNWE - the university that has approved its effective experience in the encouragement and support of students who follow the way of knowledge, high professionalism and improvement. Prof. Stattev outlined all the university lecturers as undisputable academic persons, great part of them occupying high positions in the government and business. He appealed to the first year students to use their university years for achieving the skills of an individual organization, coordination, negotiating, education and communication – the most wanted qualities at the labour market.

“The world is wonderful and it is worthy to fight for your own place in it. That`s why begin learning, obtain knowledge, acquire skills because only the smart and brave people can face the challenges and find the correct answers, to build their destiny. Don`t be the observers and be the participants. Think carefully over the promises you give and the engagements you undertake. Listen to your lecturers and you`ll learn a lot. Respect your parents who give their best for your education. Be honest people and good citizens”, were the advices by the Rector. He reminded that the beginning had always been hard but students wouldn`t be alone to challenges because they would have the institutional and human support of the university. The Rector expressed his confidence that the first year students would be responsible, inquiring and proud students of UNWE which would keep its high reputation and would work for its cause.

At the opening of the academic year attended the Vice-Rectors of UNWE, Heads of Faculties and Departments, lecturers.

“I heartily wish the large, authoritative academic family of our university to have health, courage and success”, ended his speech the Rector.

“For me as a national Ombudsman and graduate of the UNWE is a great honour of being a guest for the new academic year opening ceremony at the largest, the most authoritative and the eldest economic university in Bulgaria and Southeastern Europe”, said to the attendees in the hall Maya Manolova. She greeted the first year students for the best choice of university they had been made – the university approved itself as honoured and valuable territory of the national, European and world educational area. I am sure that you will obtain an exceptionally high preparation in the field you have chosen for education and career because at the university have highly erudite academic lecturers and scientists obtained national and international recognition who can impose high standards, educate future leaders in the economy, government, administration, law and even in the politics, pointed out the Ombudsman.

I had the chance to study at the UNWE and I was educated by the best lecturers part of which will teach you, said Maya Manolova emphasizing: ”I am what I am due to them”. Times are hard and dynamic and it is practically impossible to guarantee your future now, reminded Manolova but she expressed her confidence that the knowledge the students would obtain at the UNWE would be stable and the diploma would be a certificate of high quality.

The first year students

It is an exciting day for you, a day of important balance for the future, said to the first year students Prof. Lalko Dulevsky.  After four years when you`ll have a diploma from the UNWE you will have an advantage to all people having higher economic education in the country, featured the perspective Prof. Dulevsky. He determined the categories of people having higher education and professionals and marked the way to the professionalism by the trinity of “stable economic knowledge, good economic culture and developed economic thinking”. In combination with the good language and computer skills it is the fundament where you can start the way to the professionalism, pointed out Prof. Dulevsky.  “The UNWE is the environment where you can obtain as the necessary economic knowledge as also the necessary legal thinking and preparation”. The Chairman of the General Assembly appealed the students to continue the spirit and traditions of UNWE which would give them strength, authority and self-confidence.

The greeting by the UNWE Ombudsman Prof. Blagoy Kolev was met emotionally. He gave his advices to the new students metaphorically. According to his words in the following four years students would wear heavy rucksacks full of culture, social capital and labour. Prof. Kolev illustrated his statement by examples and comparisons as in conclusion he appealed the students: “Go and go forward!”. On this great day for you I wish you success in the January session, in love and in all your initiatives!”, said Prof. Kolev.

On behalf of the Student Council its Chairman Denis Dimitrov greeted the first year students on the occasion of the new academic year opening. He greeted them for the good choice of university and reminded that at the UNWE they would have the opportunity to self-develop and obtain lots of knowledge and skills. Don`t stop learning and develop, appealed his colleagues the Student Council Chairman.

“I hope honestly that the UNWE will provide us the necessary knowledge and skill to conquer a peak after peak in the way to our successful realization”, said to her future lecturers and colleagues Nelly Bozhkova - the first year student girl of Law having the highest score for admission at the UNWE – 36.00. She shared she was exceptionally proud of being a student at the university which had approved its traditions and she expressed her confidence that she would be able to have progress as in professional as also in the personal plans.

“I wish all the first year students who start a new stage of their life to believe in themselves and spend their time here for implementation of their dreams as well as to participate in the development of a new better future for Bulgaria”, said Nelly and cited the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke: “If one thing is difficult it is one more reason to do it”.

Following the tradition after the official ceremony were laid wreaths and flowers at the monument of the founder and first Rector of the university Prof. Stephan Bobchev (in the picture below).

The solemn opening of the 96th academic year was broadcasted lively in the Internet and then began the traditional meetings of the first year students with the Heads of Faculties.
