9th Conference of the South Eastern Monetary History Network on the Exploring South Eastern Europe in a Historical and Comparative Perspective

The 9th Conference of the South Eastern Monetary History Network on the Exploring South Eastern Europe in a Historical and Comparative Perspective gathered scientists and experts in the Large Conference Hall of the university. The two-day Forum is organized by the support of UNWE, the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) and the Bulgarian Development Bank (BDB).

This event is the consecutive authentic proof of the noble interaction between the science and practice, pointed out in his welcoming speech the Rector of UNWE Prof. D.Sc. (Econ.) Statty Stattev. He expressed his confidence that the reports, statements, conclusions which would be done by the participants and guests would be an exclusively useful contribution to the research of that very relevant and important issue. The Rector also outlined that in the programme had been provisioned the discussion of fundamental issues associated with the global economic crisis and the battle of economic ideas, the trade-off between capitalism and democracy in historical perspective, the fiscal consolidation like anti-crisis instrument, the co-evolution of money markets and monetary policy as well as a lot of particular issues based on the empirical experience of the countries from the region as Bulgaria, Albania, former Yugoslavia, etc. The well-grounded findings, significant conclusions, perspectives and tendencies in the future development of South Eastern Europe will be a major research challenge, said clearly Prof. Stattev.

The Rector announced to the audience a proposal for setting a new tradition – the UNWE to become a host of all Forums which will be held in Bulgaria by the South Eastern Monetary History Network. You have our support and willingness, outlined the Rector.

Prof. D.Sc. (Econ.) Statty Stattev awarded to Prof. D.Sc. (Econ.) Nikolay Nenovsky, lecturer at the University of Amiens, France and at the UNWE a Commemorative medal of Prof. Stephan Bobchev – Founder and First Rector of UNWE. The prize is conferred on him for his significant contribution in the field of scientific research, work for the good reputation of UNWE and loyalty to the academic traditions.

Prof. Nenovsky accepted the award with thankfulness and outlined that it would motivate him to continue working for the reputation of UNWE in the future.

Prof. Stattev is awarding the Commemorative medal to Prof. Nenovsky.

On behalf of the Bulgarian National Bank its Sub-Governor Dimitar Kostov expressed his pleasure with the fact that the meeting of the South Eastern Monetary History Network is held in Sofia and its host is the UNWE. I am glad that the BNB supported the Conference especially in the year when it is celebrated the 135th Anniversary from its establishment, pointed out Dimitar Kostov. He expressed his thankfulness for the hospitability and announced that a special edition containing the results from the Forums of the Monetary History Network would be published till the end of the year.

Ivan Hristov, member of the Governing Council and Executive Director of the Bulgarian Development Bank wished the participants in the Conference success and fruitful work. 

In the work of the Forum are included reports on key issues related to the global economic crisis and the battle of economic ideas, role of development banks in South Eastern Europe as well as the development of Bulgarian banking system, creditworthiness of entrepreneurs in Europe, the trade-off between the capitalism and democracy in historical perspective, fiscal consolidation like anti-crisis instrument, etc.
