On January, 4th, 2013 were turned 135 years from the Liberation of Sofia from the Ottoman servitude. Sofia municipality celebrated the Anniversary by a number of events organized in a partnership with the Bishopric of Sofia, Alexander Nevski Association of Friends of Russia and the Heroes of Bulgaria Foundation.

The church procession finished in front of the Monument of Bulgarian Volunteer where the lecturer from UNWE Assoc. Prof. Dr. Igor Damyanov, Minister of Education and Science from 2003 to 2005 turned to the attendants by the following greeting words:

Dear Mrs Mayor of Sofia

Dear Minister of Defence,

Your Eminence,

Dear citizens of Sofia and guests,

HAPPY HOLIDAY!

One hundred and thirty five years of free Sofia! In such moments we are more willing to indulge in the emotions not the common sense. In fact, why not both! Let`s make use of the advantages given to us by the distance of time and try being maximum impartial.

What has happened 135 years ago? We all know! LIBERATION! Yes! But why! How! What circumstances has it happened under? How many people and what kind of people were involved in that? Hundreds and thousands are the unknown ones! Much less are those ones whose names have engraved into the minds of generations.

And we couldn`t miss to remember about the insight and military talent of the Russian commander General Josif Vladimorovich Gurko. He prepared, organized and realized the military operation for liberation of Sofia which was strategic for the outcome of the Russian – Turkish War as well as a logical continuation of the success around the town of Pleven.

We are due to remember also something else! THE FACT: the Vice-Consuls of Ausria - Hungary, Italy and France – Valdhart, Positano and Lege had definitely rejected from leaving Sofia and thus they have frustrated the plans of Turkish military headquarters to burn the town down pledging the population to death. THE CONCLUSION: For a consecutive time during the ages Bulgaria has been recognized as an inseparable part of Europe. Not only as a geographic term but also as a political fact!

Once again happy holiday!

Long live Bulgaria!
