“As part of its efforts to climate action, the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) is now constructing two photovoltaic installations that will produce more than 50% of the UNWE’s energy consumption, saving 630 tons of CO2 emissions yearly”, that's what the quarterly newsletter of SDSN - Net Zero on Campus - says about our university.

The UNWE has already constructed two photovoltaic parks built on the roof and car park of the University which makes it the first Bulgarian university with a photovoltaic park contributing to the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals /SDGs/.

"It costs a lot to heat the halls in winter. In the summer the same problem is repeated when the air conditioning is on to cool the rooms. So it was unfortunate that two years ago when the energy prices started to rise very rapidly, we signed a contract to build a photovoltaic plant to produce independent and cheaper electricity. It is very modern, taking onto account the energy crises that have hit us in the recent years", says the Rector of UNWE Prof Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov at the first sod turning ceremony for the photovoltaic installation. "The contract with Prostream Group is an ESCO contract which means that the university does not pay the amount for the implementation of the public procurement but the costs are paid through the price of the electricity", explains the Rector /in the picture below on the right/.

“Simultaneously, ‘Smart Lighting for Power Saving’ and ‘Smart Home’ projects are being implemented to contribute to the sustainable green environment through energy efficiency and power and cost savings”, is also said in the quarterly newsletter of SDSN.

Committed to the SDGs, the UNWE firmly believes that the implementation of innovations, knowledge, and best practices can influence government policies and civil society to address climate change. Thus the UNWE sets an example as coordinating university of SDSN Bulgaria.
