"Cybersecurity is important because it covers everything related to protecting our data from cyberattacks aiming to steal information and use it to cause harm. Staff training and awareness is one of the cheapest and yet most effective measures to deal with all threats. Because not everyone is a specialist and not enough informed about the dangers in cyberspace but when people are aware of the thousands of threats, the attention is sharpened", said the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov. He gave as example the virus ILOVEYOU from 2000 which works by sending a fake "love letter" that looks like a harmless text file but if the addressee opens it deletes the entire hard disk of the computer and all available information. The virus has caused an estimated $10 billion damages worldwide.

"Institutions and the business, governments, the military as well as universities and other socially critical organizations store vast amounts of data. Much of this data includes sensitive information. Exposure of this information can in many cases be very damaging both to the trust of citizens in institutions and organizations and to the competitiveness of business. That is why at the UNWE we actively work in the field of cybersecurity and prevention against such attacks. This training is part of the measures in this direction", emphasized Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov.

"If you have any cybersecurity issues, always reach out to me and the Information Technology Directorate. Report anything that seems suspicious to you, the sooner you let us know, the quicker and easier we can find out if there is a problem and how serious it is. We plan to have these seminars several times a year and we do it with the idea that our academic community will be more informed about what is going on, you will know what we do in the field of cyber security, what you can rely on and what challenges we face", said the Vice Rector for Digitalization and Cybersecurity Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rosen Kirilov.

During the training Spas Ivanov made an introduction to cybersecurity. He presented the rules and regulations in the sector that affect the UNWE and highlighted the role of awareness of cybersecurity issues.

An overview was made of the most common cyber threats, such as phishing, malware and social engineering attacks. How you can fall victim to such threats was discussed with concrete examples from practice.

The lecturer presented the protection measures and outlined the changes that will be taken in terms of cybersecurity at the UNWE. He gave advices on work related to the e-mail, accounts and passwords, file storage, data entered into information systems and information sharing.

"Awareness will help you respond appropriately to a cyber accident. Using strong passwords will also minimize the risks of cybercrime. Under no circumstances you should use a password such as 4 identical or consecutive digits, your date of birth or your little name. When you choose a long and complex password that is not related to your data, your privacy will be much better protected on the Internet", emphasized Spas Ivanov.
