A Record Number of High School Pupils Took Part in the University Entrance Exam

On 23 April 2023 at the UNWE was held a preliminary examination in the format of State Matriculation Examination in Bulgarian Language and Literature and the results will be recognized for admission to our university. The organization and implementation of this examination is the result of an agreement between the Rector of the UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and Galina Ushatova, Head of REGALIA SCHOOL Learning Center for the preparation of prospective students.

In the exam took part 330 students both from REGALIA SCHOOL Learning Center and those who enrolled through the university's website willing to study at our university because the grade from this test exam is valid for the entrance exam at the UNWE.

"Welcome to our university! The UNWE has 103 years of tradition in education and stares confidently to the future", said the Vice-Rector for Educational Activities Prof. Dr. Matilda Alexandrova to the high school pupils and pointed out that in addition to the good and quality education students at our university receive also good practical training and direct contact with people from business. She also emphasized that the UNWE would not increase the student fees for the academic year 2023/2024 both for the students who study under the state order and for the paid education. Thus, the UNWE maintains the lowest fees among all universities in Bulgaria. Prof. Alexandrova presented the elite European university network ENGAGE.EU, part of which is UNWE and the opportunities for mobility under the Erasmus+ Programme.

"I wish you to give your best in this preliminary examination which for some of you will not be just a test of knowledge. I hope that the contacts we have had with you over the years have left a mark in your development. I hope that you will realize yourselves as young, talented, ambitious and successful people here in Bulgaria and if someone decides - abroad", said Galina Ushatova.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Antonia Pencheva, Head of the Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics Department who has the task to check and certify the validity of the exam papers also greeted the high school pupils: "I wish you successful work today, free your minds, show all the knowledge you have gathered so far and act responsibly because as you understood for some of you this will be the start of your studies at our university. The grade will be recognized as the entrance exam in Bulgarian Language and Literature. I wish you success!"

Dr. Ekaterina Deliverska, Director of Educational Activities Directorate at UNWE gave instructions to the participants pointing out that the exam will be held in compliance with all the rules for the Bulgarian Language and Literature State Matriculation Examination. For the strict observance of the rules, an organization was set up with quaestors from the Educational Activities Directorate.

Before the beginning of the exam lecturers from the University introduced the high school pupils to the conditions at the UNWE. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elena Simeonova, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the International Economics and Politics Faculty and Secretary General for Accreditation of UNWE, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov, Secretary General for International Affairs and lecturer at the Finance Department, Chief Assist. Dr. Emilia Duneva from the Management Department and Chief Assist. Dr. Kristian Zhelev, lecturer at the International Economic Relations and Business Department, told about the advantages of the University and informed the high school pupils about the 6 professional directions and the specialties studied at the UNWE. They emphasized on the partnership of the University with business which provides opportunities for internships and good job positions. High school students learned that the University has modern equipped classrooms, 12 dormitories with 5 000 places and all the conditions for studying and living as well as excellent opportunities for sports at Bonsist Sports Complex.

The future prospective students had the opportunity to test their knowledge on the exam questions organized in three modules. These included multiple-choice, short free-response, extended free-response and text creating tasks. The pupil Irina Zagorova /in the picture below/ from Doris Tenedy Language School drew the exam topic Option 1 out of 3 possible.

What Did the Pupils Say after the Exam

Polina Petkova from the Trade High School, Plovdiv: "I decided to attend this preliminary matriculation to check the level of my knowledge. I haven't decided yet exactly what specialty I'm going to study but I think it will be Economics".

Natalia Velcheva from Konstantin-Kiril Philosopher National High School for Ancient Languages and Cultures, Sofia: "I found out about this preliminary exam from a friend and decided to enroll and attend the exam at the UNWE because my desire is to study Law, I have not yet decided what kind of Law - whether Commercial or Commercial Banking Law. This exam gives me more options because my score on the real matriculation exam might not be so high".

Yoana Ivanova from Velizar Peev Vocational High School, Svoge: "I signed up for this preliminary exam because I have already chosen a specialty, I will study Accounting.

Mihail Adam from Acad. Lyubomir Chakalov National Natural and Mathematical High School, Sofia: "I have not chosen a specialty yet but I decided to attend the test exam to have a clear idea of about the real one and to test my knowledge".


This new form of prospective student examination at the UNWE aims to help the orientation of high school pupils by giving them the opportunity to test their knowledge in a real competitive environment.

The next test matriculation exams will be held on 29 April 2023 at Vasil Levsky Vocational High School - Yambol town of Bulgaria.
