Monday, 09 April 2012 14:41

One hundred and forty sportsmen participated in the first Economic Games held in Bulgaria. The host of the competitions on football, basketball and table-tennis for two days has been the UNWE. The final competitions were on April, 7th, - on the Day of St. Lazar (Saturday before Palm Sunday).

In the Economic Games took part the UNWE, the Economic University of Varna and Dimitar Tzenov Economic Academy of Svishtov. The Games were opened in the presence of 1 500 students and 140 sportsmen by Prof. D. Sc. (Econ.) Statty Stattev who was also the patron of the event. As a guest of the event attended Georgy Glushkov, President of Bulgarian Basketball Federation.

„It`s a wonderful idea of our Department for Physical Education and Sport to organize this sports event with participants from three Economic Universities. I`m glad that the host of the event is the most modern university Sports Complex – Bonsist where every year about 10 000 students go in for sports”, said at the opening ceremony Prof. Statty Stattev. The Rector outlined that UNWE has always been related to the sport ever since its establishment and that here has been founded the first students sports association. “Over all those years I have been really delighted with the sports success of students I have rewarded. I`m glad that the Department accept my idea of putting a Wall of The Glory – one at the Central lobby of the university and another – at the Bonsist Sports Complex. We need such a Wall where to expose the sports cups so our students to be proud of them and to go in for sports. Only over the last year one of our students has become a world champion on kickboxing, another student has held a record on swimming and our students have been winners in the World Students Tournament “Five Balls” in Paris”, said also Prof. Stattev reminding that the university founders had left the following motto: The Spirit Makes The Power.

The games are organized by the idea of Spas Stavrev, Head of Department for Physical Education and Sport and the Heads of the same Departments at the other two universities. “I`m glad that today we set up the beginning of the Economic Games. Our idea is the Games to be held every year and one of the three universities to be their host. I wish the participants to have a nice time and a lot of victories’, said Stavrev. He bestowed the Honorary Plaques to the Rector Prof. Stattev and to the UNWE Newspaper Consultant – Lewben Genov.

After the official speeches the mood of all the attendants was cheered by the university majorettes – The Perfect 10. They played two dances dressed in black leotards and won the loud applauses of students at the hall. In the opening of the event also took part The Rhythm Escape hip-hop dance band where our colleague Bojidar Borisov participated.

The World Champion on kickboxing Emanuil Dimitrov showed a trick that not many people are able to perform – without any visible efforts he broke five roof-tiles by his own hands.

The Economic Academy won the competition on table-tennis and the Economic University of Varna won the basketball cup. The Games were closed by a ceremony for awarding the winners. The champions were bestowed rewards by the Vice-Rector of the university Prof. Valentine Kisimov. “I`m glad to call you colleagues because you are great sportsmen”, he declared. “You have to know that when a man writes an autobiography for work he writes the university he has graduated, the sport for he has gone in and whether he has been a winner. The sport is the evidence whether you can win. You are winners”, outlined Prof. Kisimov.
