Cooperation Agreement between the UNWE and the IAEA

A cooperation agreement between the University of National and World Economy and the International Atomic Energy Agency /IAEA/ was signed by the Rector Prof. D.Sc. Prof. Statty Stattev and the Director General of the Agency Yukiya Amano. The event was attended by the Rector's Managing Body, Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Bulgaria to the UN Office, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe /OSCE/ and other international organizations, Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, Head of the UNWE National and Regional Security Department, etc.

The objective of the agreement is to establish a practical framework for cooperation between the parties in the field of research and organization of Master's degree programme in Nuclear Security.

Prof. Stattev pointed out that the UNWE is a leader in the higher education in Bulgaria with the highest assessment by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency among all Bulgarian universities. “Six prime ministers, 13 finance ministers, leaders in the business and administration are graduates of UNWE”, emphasized the Rector. “I am convinced that our university has all the necessary conditions for opening a Master's degree programme in Nuclear Security, pointed out Prof. Stattev.

Yukiya Amano expressed his contentment with the signing of the agreement between the UNWE and the IAEA. "I am grateful to the UNWE for opening this Master's degree programme. It will provide not only experts but also strong support by Bulgaria for the nuclear security sector", outlined Mr. Amano.

In the agreement is pointed out that the two institutions will cooperate in the formation of research teams in nuclear security in Bulgaria, education and training of personnel, participation of university staff in expert missions led by the IAEA, etc.

Ambassador Svetoslav Spasov expressed his thankfulness for the tremendous work in preparing the agreement and the Master's degree programme in Nuclear Security. “They are oriented to the future and we are going to discuss the next steps. The Master's degree programme will attract not only Bulgarian undergraduates but also students from the European Union so we plan to work in cooperation with at least six other major European universities”, pointed out Svetoslav Spasov.

“The agreement is the result of the efforts of many institutions”, said the Head of the National and Regional Security Department Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov. He determined the agreement as a huge step prepared for years.

In the Golden Book of UNWE Yukiya Amano wrote: "I am very pleased with the signing of the agreement between the UNWE and the IAEA. I am convinced that it will be particularly useful in creating professional experts who will play an important role in strengthening the nuclear security. I wish you success!"
