Accommodation

Exchange students may apply for accommodation in the university’s dormitories.

There is an “Accommodation” section in the Application form where students indicate their wish regarding the accommodation.

UNWE DORMS

1. The monthly rent for UNWE’s dorms is 200lv (approx. 100 euro).

2. There is an obligatory deposit that you have to pay, which will be returned to you once you check out of the room at the end of your stay (500lv or approx. 250 euro). A staff member of the dorms will inspect the room and if there are no damages you will get back the full amount, however, in the case of any damages to the room and/or furniture the sum for the repair will be deducted from the deposit.

3. When you check in the dorms you will sign a couple of documents: accommodation form, declaration that you have read the rules of the dorms, confirmation that you have paid, etc. (all of these documents will be available both in Bulgarian and English). It is advisable that you go to the dorms with your buddy from ESN, so that they can assist you with the whole process and documentation.

4. The dorms will be able to accommodate a total of 45 students, which will be either in block 23A or block 38 in Students Town.

5. IMPORTANT! When you decide to leave, you are OBLIGED to warn the dormitory manager ONE WEEK in advance so that they can arrange a meeting with you to inspect the room and return your deposit. If you do not do that you won’t be able to withdraw your deposit.

6. NOTE: ARRIVING ON WEEKENDS OR DURING THE NIGHT IS NOT POSSIBLE!!! Dormitory administration staff works until 16:00 during weekdays, so after this hour it won't be possible to get accommodated. Also, the weekends are non-working for the staff, so again students won't be able to get accommodated in the dormitories. Usually, students will be in contact with a buddy from ESN (Erasmus Students Network) organization who lives on campus. Please, arrange with him/her on how to get access to the room. Students will receive more information about this a few weeks after they have applied.

7. All rooms at the dormitories are shared, so students will have one or two other roommates. Rooms are equipped with the most necessary furniture – bed, table, chair and a small wardrobe. There are no kitchen facilities. Students will be supplied with a pillow and blankets but we recommend bringing their own linens and towels.

It is the students’ responsibility to clean their rooms, the toilet and shower and the other areas that they have access to. It is also the students’ responsibility to buy their own cleaning tools.

FAQ

Can I share a room with my friends? – It depends. Students get accommodated by the time of their arrival, which means that if you arrive together you will be able to tell the dormitory manager that you want to share a room with a specific person and they will tell you if it is possible or not.
Can my boyfriend/girlfriend/friend come to visit and spend the night at the dorms? Yes, but they have to pay as if they were staying at a hotel. The standard fee for one night is 20lv (approx. 10 euro) if they are going to sleep on a separate free bed and 10lv (approx. 5 euro) if they are not going to use a separate bed.
What do I have to bring with myself? What will be provided from the dorms? – All rooms at the dormitories are shared, so students will have one or two other roommates. Originally, rooms are not equipped with Internet connection. Nevertheless, there are a lot of local Internet providers in the campus area and students may sign an individual contract for the period of their stay.
Regarding bed sheets, pillow, blanket, etc., usually dorm staff provides students with that but it is advisable to take care of this yourselves.

Normally, students will be in contact with a buddy from the ESN (Erasmus Students Netwrok) organization who lives on campus. Please, arrange with him/her on how to get access to the room. Students will receive more information about this a few weeks after they have applied.

• All the dormitories and the university are situated in district called “Studentski grad” (Student town). The distance between the dormitory where you will be accommodated and the university is about 5-10 minutes by walk. The address is Studentski grad, str. 8-mi dekemvri, block 23A (София, ж.к. ERASMUS (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is a program of the European Union in the field of higher education, established in 1987. Initially it was part of the "Socrates" program, and since 2007 it has been a major part of the new integrated LLP - Lifelong Learning Programme. Since 2014, the program has grown into the integrated Erasmus+ program and brought together the majority of activities that were part of the LLP.

Universities from a total of 35 countries participate in the ERASMUS program - all 28 member states of the European Union, the countries of the European Free Trade Association (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) as well as Turkiye, Republic of Serbia and Republic of North Macedonia.

The program offers opportunities for individual mobility of students, doctoral students, teachers and administrative staff of HEIs to participate in the educational process in universities of the EU countries.

The University of National and World Economy (UNWE) joined the Erasmus program in 1999-2000 academic year - the first year in which participation in the program was permitted for Bulgaria.

The participation of UNWE in students’ and teachers’ exchange is based on the ERASMUS University Charter granted by the European Commission after a special selection procedure.

In 2021 UNWE was granted an ERASMUS+ CHARTER FOR HIGHER EDUCATION for the new period frame of the program – 2021-2027.

In its implementation of the Erasmus+ Program UNWE abides by the rules and commitments in its ERASMUS POLICY STATEMENT.

HOW TO APPLY

Students apply for exchange mobility at their home University. Afterwards, the home university MUST send a nomination (via email) to UNWE with information and contacts of the student.

All applicants must be students of UNWE’s International University Partners.

ERASMUS/international students may choose between one- or two-semester mobility period depending on the active agreement between their home university and UNWE. In order to be enrolled at UNWE students must send:

PREPARING THE STUDY PROGRAM (ONLINE LEARNING AGREEMENT - OLA)

The exchange students have to prepare an Online Learning agreement - https://www.learning-agreement.eu/. The Online Learning agreement (OLA) is a compulsory document for all Erasmus students. The OLA canNOT be replaced by any other version of the Learning Agreement. Further information about how to fill in the OLA can be found here.

Students from non-EU countries have to prepare a Learning agreement. The document should be signed by all three parties and send by mail before the start of the mobility.

In order to prepare their Learning Agreement (OLA) students have to make their choice of subjects from the List of courses offered in English. The list of courses can be found here.

The UNWE applies the European Credit Transfer System in all undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate programs. Credits earned at our university can be transferred to other higher educational institutions in any of the participating European countries.

At the end of each course, students are awarded a grade (from 2 to 6, where 2 is the lowest and 6 is the highest grade). This can be based upon a written examination, a test, project, presentation, assignment or any combination of these. According to Bulgarian education system all marks and grades are awarded using a six-point scale, with 6 representing a 'perfect' score (excellent). The table below represents how these marks compare with other common grading systems. It also shows the average distribution of the marks.

ARRIVING IN SOFIA

Most students arrive in Sofia at Sofia Airport, Central Railway Station or Central Bus Station depending on the preferred transport. However you arrive, the easiest and the fastest way of transportation is the metro. In order to get to Studentski Grad, you need to get off on metro station "G.M. Dimitrov" from where you can take bus №280 for 4 stops.

Normally, we arrange for someone (usually a buddy from the Erasmus students network) to meet the student and escort him/her to the dormitories or to UNWE.

In order to do that, please inform the ERASMUS office at UNWE for the exact date and time of your arrival at least three weeks in advance!!!

ENTRY AND LEGAL RESIDENCY IN BULGARIA

Visa

Depending upon the nationality, students may need to obtain a long-stay entry visa before coming to Bulgaria. That is usually the case for non-EU citiziens.

Residence permit

Unless the students are an EU/EEA or Swiss citizens, they may also need to finalize their application for a residence permit.

HEALTH INSURANCE

If the student is a citizen of an EU member state or of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, and plans to stay temporarily (up to 90 days) in Bulgaria, he/she might consider obtaining the European Health Insurance Card. Presentation of the European Health Insurance Card guarantees reimbursement of the medical costs on the spot, or soon after the student returns home.

If the student is not a citizen of any of these countries, he/she should check with his/her national authorities if there is entitlement to free or subsidized health treatment in Bulgaria.

Please, note that public health care security does not cover all kinds of medical services, so students might consider supplementing it with private health Insurance.

GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

MONEY MATTERS

Bulgarian currency

The official currency is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). It is fixed to the Euro and one Lev is worth around 0.50 euro. The Lev is divided into 100 stotinka. Coins worth one, two, five, ten, twenty and fifty stotinka and one and two Lev are in circulation. Notes come in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100.

Cash and electronic money

Most everyday payments are settled in cash or using electronic debit cards with PIN codes.

Cash dispensers (ATMs)

Most debit and credit cards are accepted at any of the numerous cash dispensers. In order to be sure whether a specific card will work in Bulgaria, please consult your bank about the availability of this service, its conditions and the charges involved.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

There is a wide variety of public transport means in the city of Sofia – from buses to trolleys, trams and subway (metro). The latter is relatively fast option and in rush hours (8:00-9:00 in the morning and 17:30-19:00 in the evening) it is advisable to use this type of transportation.

Tickets for all types of public transportation are very cheap. One single-trip ticket costs 1,60 leva (0.80 Euro).

Also, all incoming students have the possibility to obtain a monthly transport card at a discount. The monthly card costs 21,50 leva (approx. 11 euro) and it serves for unlimited rides for all kinds of transport.

Situation at UNWE in relation with the pandemic of COVID-19

Following the recommendations of the Bulgarian government and the order of the Rector of the University of National and World Economy, Sofia, in order to reduce the spread of infections caused by SARS-CoV-2, all lectures and classes for students and other forms of education organized by the University will be in hybrid mode (half of the lectures will be taking place in the university campus and the other half will be online) until 14.11.2021. Please check our website regularly for any updates.

FAQ concerning winter semster 2021/22

1. Has UNWE Sofia decided to cancel the incoming exchange program?

No, our university has decided to accept all incoming exchange students for winter semester 2021/22.

2. If the situation with the pandemic gets worse due to the spread of coronavirus, will you cancel the exchange mobility?

No, our university has backup plans if the situation gets worse. The university has the capability to transfer all studies online immediately in order to protect the safety of all students.

3. If all courses get transferred online, will you allow exchange students to join the program online from their home country?

Yes, all incoming students will still have the chance to take part in the "Erasmus+" program and study our courses online. For any questions regarding grant money, the students have to contact their sending institution.

4. Do you plan to offer a mix of online and on-campus classes?

Yes and that is the exact plan of our university. Half of the lectures will be taking place on the university campus and the other half will be online until 14.11.2021.

5. What measures will be implemented at the university taking into consideration the healthy/ sanitary aspects?

The university is doing its best in order to keep the students protected from the virus. Wearing masks on the university campus is obligatory and any students/teachers without masks will not be allowed to enter the university buildings.

6. Is UNWE planning to organize Orientation Days for the incoming students for winter term 2021/2022?

Unfortunately due to the pandemic of Covid-19, the University of National and World Economy will not be organizing Orientation Days for the incoming students for winter term 2021/2022.

BULGARIAN LANGUAGE COURSE

All incoming students have the opportunity to take part in a Bulgarian language course.

The course is free of charge, gives additional 5 ECTS, and has a duration of 40 hours.

At the end of the course, all students receive a certificate.

SPORT ACTIVITIES

UNWE has a sports center called "Bonsist" which is located within the perimeter of the main building of the university.

The sports activities are free of charge but do not grant any additional ECTS.

ERASMUS STUDENT NETWORK (ESN)

Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is a non-profit international student organisation. Their mission is to represent international students and provide opportunities for cultural understanding and self-development under the principle of Students Helping Students. Currently there are 550 local sections in 42 countries.

ERASMUS STUDENT NETWORK UNWE (ESN UNWE)

ESN UNWE is a local section in Sofia, Bulgaria. It’s represented by a group of volunteers that help international students coming on Erasmus in the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) with their integration in the local community.

ESN provides exchange students with different kinds of support like:

Connecting all incoming Erasmus students and thus forming a local Erasmus community;
Assisting students with transportation, accommodation (at the dorms or in an apartment), translation, and administration, among other things;
Enhancing their stay in Bulgaria by organizing a variety of engaging events and trips that comply with COVID measures.

BUDDY SYSTEM

Prior to their arrival all exchange students are offered the possibility to request a mentor (buddy) to help them on an even more personal level.

Some of the perks of having a buddy:

They meet students at the airport or bus/railway station and take them to their accommodation (depends on the buddy’s availability);
They assist exchange students with all standard procedures like checking in the dorms, moving in a flat, getting a public transportation card, opening a bank account, etc.
They know when and where the cool events take place, so will always keep exchange students informed.

Online Learning Agreement (OLA)

The Erasmus+ exchange students coming to UNWE have to prepare an Online Learning agreement (OLA). The Online Learning agreement (OLA) is a compulsory document for all Erasmus students and contains the list of courses that the students intend to study at UNWE. The OLA has to be signed and approved before the mobility period.

Attention! If you are a student from non-EU countries you will have to prepare a Learning agreement. The document should be signed by all three parties and send by mail before the start of the mobility.

How to prepare and approve your OLA

1. Register to Online Learning Agreement through https://www.learning-agreement.eu/ or with Erasmus+ App. After you have registered, you have the same login username and password for both the portal and Erasmus+ app.

2. Follow the instructions in the portal to complete your OLA and sign it online.

3. Your home university will automatically receive a notification by e-mail to verify and sign your OLA once you have signed it.

4. We (UNWE) will receive an automatic notification by e-mail to verify and sign your OLA once your home university has signed it.

5. Once UNWE has signed it, your OLA is complete. You will receive an automatic email notification informing that the document is ready.

In order to prepare the OLA you have to choose subjects from the List of courses offered in English. The list of courses can be found here.

Changes to your OLA

If you need to make changes to your OLA after it has been signed by all parties, you can log in and do so through https://www.learning-agreement.eu/ or with Erasmus+ App. Once all changes are complete the document need to be signed again.

It is also possible to adjust the OLA during the mobility period. Delete courses you are no longer taking and/or add new courses in the same way as when you created the OLA.

HOW TO APPLY FOR EXCHANGE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NATIONAL AND WORLD ECONOMY
If the home university has an Inter-institutional agreement with the UNWE for International Credit Mobility, interested students apply for exchange mobility at their home University. Afterwards, the home university MUST send a nomination (via email) to UNWE with information and contacts of the student.
After the nomination, students will receive information about the application procedure from the UNWE.

All applicants must be students of UNWE’s International University Partners.

Depending upon the nationality, students may need to obtain a long-stay entry visa before coming to Bulgaria. That is usually the case for non-EU citizens.

Students are allowed to enroll in courses offered by UNWE according to the Inter-institutional agreement with the partner HEI.

PREPARING THE STUDY PROGRAM (LEARNING AGREEMENT)

In order to prepare their individual study program (Learning Agreement) students have to make their choice of subjects from the List of courses offered in English. The list of courses can be found here .

All students and coordinators must keep in mind that some of the courses may vary upon arrival due to some of them being optional. Students will receive the final open courses 1-2 weeks before the official start of lectures.
At the end of each course, students are awarded a grade (from 2 to 6, where 2 is the lowest and 6 is the highest grade). This can be based upon a written examination, a test, project, presentation, assignment or any combination of these. According to Bulgarian education system all marks and grades are awarded using a six-point scale, with 6 representing a 'perfect' score (excellent). The table below represents how these marks compare with other common grading systems. It also shows the average distribution of the marks.

ACCOMMODATION
Exchange students may apply for accommodation in the university’s dormitories.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR ERASMUS+EXCHANGE STUDENTS FROM PARTNER COUNTRIES

· Individual support

The financial support corresponds to EUR 800,00 per month and EUR 26,67 per extra days. Students receive 80% of the payment for the entire period at the start of their exchange, within 2 weeks after signing the individual grant agreement, and 20% in the last month, after filling in the Erasmus+ mobility report. The full amount to be paid to the student will be set in the grant agreement and according to the dates / days spent on study exchange at UNWE.

· Travel costs

The travel support is calculated based on the travel distances by using the distance calculator supported by the European Commission.

Six distance bands have been identified. The amount provided will support the round trip.

Applicants must have a contractual relationship at one of the partner universities at the time of applying and while abroad.

STAFF MOBILITY FOR TEACHING

The length of the teaching period is 5 days, and these 5 days should be consecutive. Teaching activities must be carried out for a minimum of 8 hours during the week.

The mobility period shall last 5 working days for teaching staff + 2 days for travel.

BEFORE the mobility start a teacher from the partner university should establish communication with the Erasmus office at UNWE to arrange teaching activities; teaching activities need to be set in the Mobility agreement.

For the teaching mobility please take into account the Academic Calendar of the University of National and World Economy and the official holidays in Bulgaria.

STAFF MOBILITY FOR TRAINING
This activity supports the professional development of staff in the form of training events abroad (excluding conferences) and job shadowing/observation periods/training at a Partner University.

The mobility period shall last 5 working days for non-teaching staff + 2 days for travel.

BEFORE the mobility start a staff member from the partner university should establish communication with the Erasmus office at UNWE to arrange training activities; training activities need to be set in the Mobility agreement.

The Host institution will issue a letter of acceptance for the participant necessary for the visa application.

NOMINATION AND APPLICATION PROCEDURE

STEP 1. Staff member from the partner university needs to be nominated by the home university – please contact your coordinator.
STEP 2. The staff member should make a contact with a colleague from the Erasmus office of the UNWE in order to agree on the work plan and fill out the Mobility agreement
STEP 3. After the mobility agreement is signed (with planned teaching / training activities has been signed), a scanned copy is to be sent to Erasmus+ Office of the UNWE, erasmus@unwe.bg + passport scan. Please note that the grant agreement that regulates the payment of the financial support towards the staff member and a few additional administrative requirements need to be regulated before arrival – the actual start of mobility/arrival should be planned minimum 3 months in advance.

Like every year we had a little trip for the incoming students. This year the destination was Koprivshtitsa.

During the spring term all exchange students had the possiblity to take part in a one-day ski /snowboard school on the Vitosha mountain.
