The 2019/2020 cooperation program between the Financial University and UNWE encourages faculty members and Ph.D. students of the two universities to publish their research papers in the following journals:

Review of Business and Economics Studies

Review of Business and Economics Studies (RoBES) is an editorially independent international academic journal published in British English with Russian abstracts. RoBES is a multidisciplinary journal committed to increasing the communication between the sub-disciplines within economic and business studies and bringing up-to-date information on current developments within the field.

RoBES cover a wide range of emerging topics of business and economics with a focus on advanced international finance, sustainability and emerging markets all over the world. It publishes original research papers, reviews of the discipline, theoretical and conceptual work, applied research, program descriptions, research in organization and the community, and curricular developments. The journal aims to search what is currently most cited and discussed topics in finance, economics, and management, select those topics that might be of interest in a current social context for decision-makers in business and government, and connect business and state authorities to academia by delivering deep qualitative insights, strongly reasoned with the rigorous quantitative methodology. A double-blind peer-review process is used for paper selection.

Financial University and UNWE Held Their First Students’ Webinar

On November 28, 2019, Financial University and UNWE held their first students’ webinar “International Project Management: The Perspective of Russia and Eastern Europe – International Students’ Project”. The event was organized in the framework of the 2019/2020 Cooperation Programme of the two universities and within the Sixth International Financial University Forum: “Growth or Recession: Which to expect?”.

The web conference was declared open by Prof. D.Sc. Alexandr Ilyinsky – Dean of International Finance Faculty at the Financial University and by Assoc. Prof. Michael Musov – Secretary-General for International Cooperation of UNWE. Students were welcomed also by Ms. Maria Arakcheeva – Head of the Laboratory of International Finance at the Financial University and by Dr. Christian Zhelev – an assistant professor in the department of “International Economic Relations and Business” at UNWE and project scientific advisor.

All the projects provoked great interest to the public and a lively discussion. The experience gained was of great value for both students and faculty.

In his closing remarks, Prof. A. Ilyinsky said: “It is a great honor for the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation to develop the cooperation with your University of National and World Economy! Great thank you for participating in the online-webinar for students within the Sixth International Forum. Today we heard the brilliant ideas and saw the project presentations of students of two partner Universities, it was a great common event for our Universities. We are looking forward to the upcoming events and further research partnership!”

Before closing the webinar, Prof. Musov pointed out: “We are grateful to have this webinar with the Financial University, because in these times of economic globalization, information technologies, and uncertainties, in these times calling for sustainable development it is crucial to see the most important part of a university – its student body, to actively participate in such valuable international projects.” He concluded “Changes in the real world begin with changes in our mind. Changes in our mind begin with new ideas. New ideas are born by sharing knowledge and experience. So, by sharing your ideas, you inspire the changes you wish to see in the world.”

International Conference "Student Leadership Conference", 26 October 2019 – Video Available Now Online

The conference discussed the prospects of cooperation between higher education institutions and professional organizations in the field of international finance and accounting and analytical activities, as well as the possibility of forming professional competencies in the process of studying at the university, which are in demand on the international labor market. Students were informed about IMA scholarship opportunities for passing the certificate in management accounting (CMA) exam.

The Sixth International Financial University Forum: “Growth or Recession: Which to expect?”

The Government of Russia has set course for accelerated economic growth aimed at joining the Top Five or leading world economies. In order to reach such an ambitious goal, Russia has mobilised all financial and other resources of the state. However, recently various experts expressed rather conservative viewpoints, speculating over possible negative effects of the downward phase of the credit cycle, and stated that the whole world is facing a global economic recession provoked, inter alia, by the so-called trade wars and economic sanctions.

In light of the above, is it fair to say that we should be prepared not for accelerated growth but for a lasting recession? Did the economic agenda of Russia and other counties change in the first half of 2019 and, if so, how? What should the government be prepared for today: economic growth or mitigation of possible crisis consequences? If, in fact, our economic growth has not accelerated and we face a significant growth rate decline, if not stagnation – is this an overly pessimistic point of view too? At the Forum, we plan to join massive intellectual forces to seek answers to these and many other pressing questions and try to determine the government's key economic priorities for the mid-term prospective.

This year the Financial University International Forum will be held for the 6th time. It is rightfully considered to be the venue for a free and open discussion of changes in the Russian and world economies, structural transformation of international trade, and problems of social development. The Forum is attended by senior government officials, notable public and political figures, prominent business people, well-known researchers and members of the academic community. It has become a tradition to open the forum with lectures of the Nobel Prize winners and 2019 will not be an exception. Prof. Joseph Eugene Stiglitz, winner of the 2001 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, has agreed to join us as the guest of honor. In total, we expect over 3,000 speakers and guests to attend our massive and exciting 3-day event.

The second day of the Forum will be devoted to conferences and panel discussions that will address and analyze the key issues in social and economic development of Russia and the drastic changes in the international economic environment. The discussions will concentrate on several specific topics that give names to the relevant conferences, namely:

Poverty in a Wealthy State
How to solve the poverty problem? Poverty is not just a shame but also a barrier to economic growth. Is the microcredit bubble about to burst? If it does, what consequences will we face?
Digital Economy: Person and Labor in New Environment
Let's take a closer look at the labor market changes in the context of global digitalization. Which professions will disappear and which will emerge in the future?
Why Does the World Economy Slow Down?
Why do most countries' economic growth rates go down? The world in the trade wars age: how do they impact the Russian economy and its development prospects?

Which industries could lead the technological leap? We will focus on the Financial University's experience of cooperation with the nuclear energy sector.
Is This the End of Liberalism?
Liberalism: is it fair to say that the concept has run out of steam? If so, what will replace it? Which ideas will explain the ways of the state and society development in the future? Does this mean that we are now on the verge of the new era of conservatism?

At the closing day of the Forum – November, 28 – the Young Researcher sessions will be held, where the young researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students will share their views on the future of the economy and world politics with the audience.

The objective of the 2019/2020 cooperation program between the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation (Financial University) – Moscow and the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) – Sofia is to strengthen the existing strategic cooperation between the two institutions, working on a joint educational and research activities of mutual benefit for our students and faculty members.

The two universities aim at exchanging and sharing knowledge and skills with the view to promote student and faculty mobility, participate in international conferences and projects, exchange of information on educational and research issues, initiate a dialogue on a joint master’s degree program and advance the process of establishing the Balkans Research Centre.

Successful implementation of the 2019/2020 cooperation program will be a breakthrough in the academic cooperation between the Russian universities and the universities from South-eastern Europe, representing a best-practice example that adds value to education and research and contributes to the success of students and faculty members around the world.

About the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation

Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation (fa.ru/en) is one of the oldest Russian financial and economic expert training institution of higher education. Found in 1919, it now embraces all regions of Russia by its branch system, offering various programs at all levels of education: lyceum education, Bachelor, Master, Ph.D., Post-Doctorate, short courses, and professional training.

Structure

The University has come a long way. It has evolved from an institute and a finance and banking specialist training academy into a major research and education center. Today, the University incorporates:

16 Faculties, 14 research Departments, 11 teaching Departments, 11 collaborative provision departments formed in cooperation with the employers, 2 Colleges and a Lyceum.
2 research centers and 2 research institutes;
further education divisions that include 4 higher schools, 2 institutes, and a research center.

In addition to the divisions listed above, the University incorporates 2 institutes, 5 centers, one agency, and a business school. It has 27 University Branches.

Educational Programs

The Financial University is one of the leading Russian higher education institutions. It offers 13 bachelor degree programs with 37 concentrations and 14 master degree programs with more than 60 concentrations with some of them partly or totally taught in English. 16 post-secondary training programs, and 35 professional development programs, incl. 10 МВА programs and 183 advanced training programs.

The Financial University has implemented and is improving the training scheme based upon the availability of various learning paths and modes of continuous education. The quality of training offered by the University is widely recognized and is due to the highly qualified teaching staff employed. As of 1 September 2018, there are 1,378 teaching staff members who are based in Moscow, including 1,116 holders of academic degrees. The number includes 301 Doctors of Sciences and 815 holders of Ph.D. degrees.

International Affairs

Having over 120 partners among leading higher education institutions in more than 50 countries, Financial University effectively fosters its academic mobility. Students can select different options for studying abroad and participate in international scholarship programs.

About the University of National and World Economy

Established in 1920, the University of National and World Economy (unwe.bg/en) in Sofia is the largest and longest-running higher educational institution in South-eastern Europe. With an unequaled track record in Bulgaria, the University is considered as a leader in European higher education, playing an integral role in furthering educational standards in economics, management, administration, law, and politics.

With over 22,000 students and more than 500 lecturers, UNWE is well known for its educational excellence. During the last three evaluation procedures, in 2006, 2012 and 2018, UNWE was awarded the highest attainable accreditation rating by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency among all Bulgarian universities. Structure

UNWE has 8 faculties (General Economics Faculty, Faculty of Finance and Accountancy, Business Faculty, Faculty of Economics of Infrastructure, Faculty of International Economics and Politics, Management and Administration Faculty, Faculty of Applied Informatics and Statistics, Law Faculty) and 34 departments. The University strives to be the preferred place in Bulgaria for young people who want to acquire modern education, so it is constantly looking to develop and expand its bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctoral degree programs.

Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programs

UNWE offers 43 Bachelor’s degree programs. Six of them being taught in English (Finance and Accounting; Economics; Business Economics and Management; Marketing and Strategic Planning; International Economic Relationships and Business Informatics and Communications). All programs have a total duration of 8 semesters (4 years).

The university offers 106 Master’s degree programs. Three of them being taught in English (Accounting, Financial Control and Finance, 2 semesters; International Business, 2 semesters; and Supply Chain Management, 2 semesters)

In addition, UNWE offers the following international Master’s degree programs taught in English:

Master’s Degree Program in Nuclear Security (3 semesters) – an international program with the active support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria
International Business (4 semesters) – a joint program with the University of International Studies of Rome (UNINT), Italy

Doctoral Degree Programs

UNWE offers numerous opportunities to obtain a doctorate: in a structured regular or part-time program or in an individual doctorate under supervision. Currently, more than 450 Ph.D. students from Bulgaria and abroad (Italy, Albania, Lebanon, etc.) are enrolled in 38 doctoral degree programs.

International Affairs

To form highly educated persons who can lead society to a more perfect and humane world, UNWE has established cooperation agreements with more than 160 higher education institutions from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The long-term objectives of the University have always been to work with these institutions on the development of joint master’s degree and doctoral programs, research projects and joint publications, distance learning opportunities, student and staff exchange, among others.

The ECTS applied at the UNWE enables the mobility of students between different programs as well as between the UNWE and other universities in Bulgaria and abroad.

The format and the organization of this scientific event are orientated towards creating an academic atmosphere and an opportunity for a dialog and exchange of ideas between different levels in the academic community.

The conference is also opened for participation of students (BA and MA degrees of education) presenting their research interests and studies. Students will take part in the sessions and discussions with their lecturers as well as with scientists, policy-makers and business representatives.

Joint Research Projects

Under the 2019/2020 cooperation program, students from the two universities will be involved in a collaborative challenge. In teams of 4-6 people, students have to prepare practical projects of benefit for the society in the two partner countries. The projects may develop an innovative idea or a new way of solving an economic and/or social problem or just to upgrade existing solutions.

Possible areas of research cooperation could be found here. However, students are welcome to further define the topic of their project.

The expected output under each project is a research paper that will be presented at a special webinar scheduled for the end of November 2019.
