CURRICULUM

The Dual Master’s programme in International Business and Governance taught in English between the International Economic Relations and Business Department /International Economics and Politics Faculty/ of UNWE and Shanghai Jiao Tong University - School of International and Public Affairs, China, prepares professionals with excellent knowledge of global economic development and the skills to conduct international business in a dynamic cross-cultural environment. The speciality is multidisciplinary and combines theoretical knowledge with practical application in both international business and public management.

The Dual Master's degree speciality has duration of 4 semesters. The first two semesters are held at the UNWE and the third and fourth ones are held at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The one-year stay of the students is in the most populous and second largest economy in the world - China and in its largest megacity - Shanghai which offers excellent opportunities for internships in a global environment. Students work with lecturers having real practical experience and have the opportunity to build a wide network of international contacts which in combination with the diverse curriculum and focus on China creates unique conditions for career development. CURRICULUM

The Dual Master’s programme in International Business taught in English between the International Economic Relations and Business Department /International Economics and Politics Faculty/ of UNWE and the Economics Faculty of the University of International Studies /UNINT/ in Rome, Italy, is designed for graduates of different professional fields. It aims to develop knowledge, skills and competences in the field of international business. The education is practically oriented.

The Dual Master's degree speciality has duration of 4 semesters. The first two semesters are held at the UNWE and the third and fourth ones are held at the UNINT. At the end of their studies the Master's students receive two diplomas for completed Master's degree taught in English - issued by the UNINT and the UNWE respectively. The Bulgarian students of the Dual Master's Degree Programme has the right to be granted a scholarship under the Erasmus+ Programme during the semesters of study at the UNINT - Rome.

Procedure on Recognition of Higher Education Degree from Schools of Higher Education Abroad

In order to implement the procedure on the recognition of Master’s degree diplomas, the applicants for training in the educational and scientific degree of Doctor that have completed their higher education in schools of higher education abroad shall submit the following documents:

Application Form /model/;
Diploma of higher education – copy or legalized* translation in Bulgarian;
The academic transcripts with the grades – copy or legalized* translation in Bulgarian;
A document certifying a change in the applicant’s names, if there is such a change;
A payment document certifying the bank transfer of the administrative fee to the amount of 390.00 BGN / 199.40 EUR.

In case the applicant’s Master’s degree diploma has already been recognized under the terms and conditions of art. 6, item 2 от of the Ordinance on the State Requirements for the Recognition of Acquired Higher Education by the National Center for Information and Documentation /NACID/, to the documents is attached the certificate issued by NACID.

UNWE prepares and sends to the National Center for Information and Documentation /NACID/ the documents so that the status of the educational institution that has issued the diploma is established and its authenticity verified. Upon the receipt of an answer by NACID, the submitted documents that meet the requirements shall be examined by the Commission at UNWE for the recognition of higher education acquired at schools of higher education abroad. Based on the Commission’s report, UNWE’s Rector makes a decision for the recognition of acquired higher education so that training at UNWE should continue. The higher education recognized by UNWE’s Rector applies only with regard to the continuation of training at UNWE and does not ensure rights that can be used in relations with third parties.

Procedure on PhD Thesis Defense

PhD Thesis Defense

I. Doctoral students shall be admitted to defense in case they have:

Officially completed their studies and are entitled to defense;
Prepared a PhD thesis that has been discussed at the Department and a positive decision has been made about the readiness for defense;
The written PhD thesis is in line with the minimal requirements for research defined by the Rulebook on the Implementation of LDASRB.

II. Within 30 days from the Departmental council’s positive decision on the readiness for defense, the Doctoral student submits at the Science Directorate the following documents:

Application to the Rector /model – 1. Doctoral students enrolled up to 4 May 2018; 2. Doctoral students enrolled after 4 May 2018/ for organizing and holding the defense;
CV;
A copy of the minutes from the Departmental council’s meeting at which a positive decision has been made about the readiness for defense;
Copies of the PhD thesis and the official summary both on electronic device and on paper for each member of the scientific panel and a copy to be at the disposal of those interested, which is stored at the Science Directorate;
Copies of the publications on the topic of the PhD thesis for each member of the scientific panel;
A reference note certifying that the minimal requirements for research defined by the Rulebook on the Implementation of LDASRB are met;
A declaration about the scientific and applied scientific results that constitute an original contribution to science.

III. Full-time or part-time Doctoral students enrolled for state-subsized studies are exempt from a fee for the public defense of the PhD thesis, if within the duration of their academic training they file their documents for the defense at the Scientific Councils and Contests Directorate together with the application in a unified form that has been issued a reference number by UNWE’s clerk’s office.

The Doctoral students that have officially completed their studies and are entitled to defense (after the expiry of the duration of academic training) can defend their PhD thesis within two years by paying a fee for public defense to the amount of 2 900.00 BGN / 1 482.75 EUR. Upon the expiry of the two years, the Doctoral student loses all rights under the Doctoral degree studies.

IV. The open meeting for the public defense of the PhD thesis is held at UNWE in presence, unless an order issued by the Rector provides for something else. The date, hour and place of the defense are made public on UNWE’s website and/or through other appropriate means.

The open meeting of the scientific panel is held on the following agenda:

The scientific supervisor or the chair of the scientific panel presents the Doctoral student;
The Doctoral student makes a brief presentation of the basic results of his PhD thesis;
The members of the scientific panel present their reviews and opinion statements;
The members of the scientific panel and each attendee at the public defense have the right to make statements and ask questions which the Doctoral student may answer;
Each member of the scientific panel publicly announces their assessment − positive or negative;
The chair of the scientific panel announces the results from the defense.

V. Up to seven days after the defense, the Doctoral students that have successfully defended their PhD thesis submit to the Science Directorate three copies of the PhD thesis and of the official summary to provide to the depositary organizations.

VI. The Educational and Scientific degree of PhD is acquired on the day on which the PhD thesis is successfully defended.

UNWE issues the diploma for the Educational and Scientific degree of PhD in the Bulgarian language, and in the event of a personal request – an attachment in English.

Administrative Procedures for Education in Doctoral Programmes at UNWE

Doctoral students are admitted to a Ph.D programme by virtue of an order issued by UNWE’s Rector.

In compliance with decisions made by UNWE’s Academic Council, Doctoral students enrolled in an Individual Doctoral Programme after 21 February 2024 shall pay the following fees:

2 600.00 BGN / 1 329.36 EUR is the annual tuition fee for Bulgarian nationals and for citizens of the EU and the EEA.
1 750.00 EUR is the annual tuition fee for the nationals of countries in the Western Balkans – Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro.
3 500.00 EUR is the annual tuition fee for the nationals of countries outside the EU and the EEA.

The Doctoral students enrolled in an Individual Doctoral Programme before 21 February 2024 shall continue their education by paying the tuition fees that were valid as of the date of their enrollment for Doctoral studies.

The time limits for the payment of the fees by the Doctoral students enrolled in an Individual Doctoral Programme are specified in the agreement signed by UNWE and the Doctoral student.

After enrolling in a Ph.D programme, a university email address and password is created for each Ph.D student and sent to the personal email address. Through the university email address and password Ph.D students participate in online courses and exams organized by the UNWE.

Within three months upon enrollment in Doctoral studies, every Doctoral student together with their scientific supervisor shall prepare an Individual Study Plan for the whole duration of the Doctoral studies. Samples of Individual Study Plans are available on UNWE’s website > Education > Doctoral students > Individual Study Plan.

Doctoral students who want to sit for an examination on a specific date must submit an Application Form to the relevant Faculty where they study, addressed to the Dean. A sample of the Application Form is available on the UNWE website > Education > Doctoral students > Exams.

All Doctoral students shall report on their work at the end of every academic year. The Report is submitted to the Department that carries out the instruction both on paper and electronically (via e-mail or on an electronic device). The Doctoral students are given a positive or negative annual appraisal.

A sample of the Report on the Implementation of the Indvidual Study Plan is available on the UNWE website > Education > Doctoral students > Report.

The Doctoral student is given a negative appraisal by the Faculty Council upon the proposal of the Departmental Council in the cases when within one academic year under the Individual Study Plan the Doctoral student has failed to submit the annual Report for the respective academic year.

All Doctoral students are entitled to terminate their education for a period of up to two years, and extend their education for a period of up to one year. Doctoral students shall file a request without specific requirements addressed to Head of the Department. The request is considered at a Departmental and Faculty Council. The procedures for the termination/extension of the period of education are laid out in an order issued by the Vice Rector in charge R&D (research and development). Within the termination/extension, Doctoral students do not lose their status of trainees and are entitled to sit for exams and perform all activities under their Doctoral studies.

The Doctoral students that have officially finished off their research and are entilted to a public defense of their Ph.D thesis, have the opportunity to defend their Ph.D thesis within two years and shall pay a fee for the public defense to the amount of 2 900.00 BGN / 1 482.75 EUR. Upon the expiry of the two-year period, the Doctoral student loses all rights under the Doctoral studies programme.

*Prof. Dr. Nadezhda Hristova* shared that she was very excited because this happens once in a lifetime. She expressed her gratitude to her colleagues from the Law Faculty for their unanimous support throughout the procedure and to her family. She wished all her colleagues in robes good health and much professional achievements.	*Prof. Dr. Nina Chilova* pointed out that today is a day filled with emotions, a day of great institutional significance. She expressed her excitement and personal contentment with the long and difficult journey filled with professional and personal challenges. She emphasized that although the academic growth is a solitary pursuit, without the support and understanding of the family, colleagues and friends this day would not have been so emotional.	*Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov* expressed his gratitude to Mr. Valdis Dombrovskis and shared that it was a great honour to receive his Certificate from him. He pointed out that his relation with the UNWE dates back to 1998, when he started his second Master's degree and for already three decades he has been related to the University.
