The Rector Participated in the Closing Conference on the Project Diversity and Inclusivity in Security Studies Held in Lille, France

The Closing Conference on the project Diversity and Inclusivity in Security Studies, funded under the ERASMUS+ Programme and Coordinated by the UNWE, was held at the European School of Political and Social Sciences (ESPOL) in Lille, France. It was attended by all partner organizations - the UNWE /Bulgaria/, Institut Catholique de Lille /France/, Neapolis University /Cyprus/, PA Partners for Skills Development /Cyprus/, the University of Malta, the University of the Peloponnese /Greece/, and Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica /Slovakia/.

On behalf of UNWE at the event were the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, who is the Project Head, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atanas Dimitrov, Project Coordinator and Scientific Secretary of the UWNE National and Regional Security Department.

The Rector presented to the participants the idea of the project, how it originated, the initial expectations and its significance for achieving diversity, inclusion and innovation in education - and specifically in security studies - in the current conditions of the world we live. In his remarks, he emphasized the role of UNWE in this regard at both the national and international levels.

The project Diversity and Inclusivity in Security Studies has an objective to promote the inclusivity and diversity in the field of security studies - one of the least inclusive and diverse areas of study of international politics. In this regard, the project’s activities include identifying the gaps and needs in curricula related to the security studies, introducing new approaches that will be more inclusive and ensure a better understanding of diversity, as well as developing an online learning platform and a simulation game to combat discrimination.

Representatives of the University Visited the Science Festival “Hello, Space! Bulgaria Speaks 6.0”

Assoc. Prof. D.Sc. Irena Markova, lecturer at the UNWE Human Resources and Social Protection Department, and Doctoral student Milva Lazarova from the same department participated in the first day of the Scientific Festival “Hello, Space! Bulgaria Speaks 6.0,” which took place under the motto The Moon, Mars, and Beyond: Horizons Without Borders.

They attended the inspiring lecture by Maxim Behar, Chairman of the UNWE Board of Trustees, and his wife Veneta Behar, who shared their impressions and experiences from their training for space missions and their stay at NASA’s Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, USA, earlier this year.

In her presentation, Veneta Behar also emphasized the importance of space insurance in the space missions. The author of the first book on space insurance in Bulgaria is Assoc. Prof. D.Sc. Irena Markova. Her book Space Insurance /Challenges, Practices, and Solutions/ had a premiere during the April edition of University Book Week.

The presentation by Tommaso Gidini, Head of the Mechanical Department at the European Space Agency, on the topic “From Homo Sapiens to Homo Caelestis: Humanity Becomes a Multiplanetary Species” also provoked great interest among the audience.

For a consecutive year, the event brought together people of all ages at Sofia Tech Park, driven by the creativity and curiosity about the world of science, space and technology. The forum provided a wide range of activities for children and young people in the form of workshops, demonstrations and interactive booths.

Five Real-Life Cases Solved the Participants in the Summer School on Modeling, AI and Complex Systems 2026

The Summer School on Modeling, AI and Complex Systems 2026 successfully concluded after 10 intensive days of lectures, workshops and applied team work in Gyulechica, Rila Mountain. The UNWE Management and Administration Faculty was among the co-organizers of the event, which brought together 25 participants from 5 different organizations, including 6 Doctoral students from the UNWE.

The programme combined methodological foundations, data analysis, artificial intelligence, complex systems and research practice. According to the published schedule, the Summer School included 15 lecturers, 20 thematic lectures and 14 workshop and teamwork blocks, amounting to over 90 study hours. The event was headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Angel Marchev, Jr. The final day was dedicated to the presentation of solutions to five real-life cases: longevity and the labour market, forecasting electricity demand, supply and price in Bulgaria, EEG data analysis, computer vision event detection and a multi-agent system for automated data science.

Among the most important programme highlights were the sessions on the scientific method and General Systems Theory, data mining, Bayesian thinking, agentic AI and self-organizing AI. The feedback from participants emphasized the value of clear explanations, practical demonstrations, interdisciplinary links and the direct applicability of the methods to dissertation and research work.

The school followed an intensive format in which participants did not only listen to lectures, but also worked in teams, tested software tools, discussed methodological decisions and prepared analytical solutions. The practical orientation of the programme allowed young researchers to connect theoretical concepts with real datasets, models and decision-making problems.

The participation of UNWE was on the project NID NF-15/2026/B. The successful completion of the Summer School 2026 confirms the role of UNWE in the field the research capacity development in modeling, artificial intelligence and complex systems.

The First Student Campus Built under the Recovery and Resilience Plan Was Officially Opened

The first completed student campus built under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, as part of investments to modernize the educational infrastructure, was officially opened.

Project partners are the UNWE, St. Climent Ohridsky University of Sofia and the Medical University of Sofia. The campus is located in the area next to the University of Sofia student dormitories near block 7, 8 and 9 in Sudents Town.

Later this year, the newly built campus of the University of National and World Economy in the area of blocks 24 and 25 is also expected to be opened.

During the ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Education and Science Acad. Nikolay Vitanov noted that the project is an example of effective cooperation between the three leading Bulgarian universities, which join forces to develop a high-quality educational and social environment. He said that the renovated student dormitories will welcome their first residents in the coming months.

She noted that the modern infrastructure creates a better university environment, and that the project is an example of successful partnership between the higher education institutions in the interest of young people.

The renovated campus provides a modern environment for sports, cultural events and student recreation. As part of the project, an amphitheater has been built to host student events, festivals, cultural initiatives and open-air lectures, along with modern sports facilities including a football pitch, a multi-purpose volleyball and basketball court, a tennis court, and an outdoor fitness area. The project also includes new pedestrian walkways, landscaped green areas and recreational spaces developed using environmentally friendly and energy-efficient solutions. A strong emphasis has been placed on the accessible environment. The entire site has been designed to provide barrier-free access for people with disabilities to the sports facilities, recreational areas and building entrances.

The official opening ceremony was also attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Parvan Parvanov, Acting Rector of the University of Sofia, Prof. Dr. Boycho Landzhov, Rector of the Medical University of Sofia as well as representatives of the Academic Leaderships and Student Councils of the three partner universities.

The Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov Held an Official Meeting with the Ambassador of China H.E. Dai Qingli

An official meeting was held at the Embassy of People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Bulgaria between the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary H.E. Dai Qingli and the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov. The meeting was also attended by the UNWE Vice Rector for International Affairs Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov and Mr. Yang Tian, Head of the Education Department at the Embassy.

The conversation covered topics of mutual interest related to the development of Bulgarian-Chinese relations in the higher education, science and academic exchange. Both sides shared their views on the opportunities for expanding the cooperation between the UNWE and leading Chinese universities and scientific institutions, as well as the organization of joint initiatives in the fields of education, scientific research and international academic mobility.

The Rector presented UNWE’s international policy priorities and highlighted the University’s efforts to develop strategic partnerships with leading Chinese universities. He noted that the international cooperation is among the University’s key priorities.

H.E. Dai Qingli expressed contentment with the active dialogue with the UNWE and emphasized the importance of academic relations as a basis for strengthening the friendly relations between China and Bulgaria. The Ambassador expressed the Embassy’s readiness to continue supporting initiatives for strengthening the educational and scientific cooperation.

The meeting was held in a spirit of mutual respect and constructive dialogue and reaffirmed the shared desire to develop a long-term partnership and to implement new joint projects in the fields of higher education, science and academic diplomacy.

Memorandum of Cooperation with Association More Women in Power

By signing the Memorandum of Cooperation the UNWE builds on its strong working relationship with the representatives of More Women in Power Association and marks the beginning of an official partnership between the two organizations.

The agreement establishes a framework for strategic cooperation aimed at enhancing the quality of education, scientific research and innovation as well as supporting the young people by promoting youth employment, culture and innovation. The planned activities include joint initiatives to support students’ education, keep them informed about public events, training opportunities, internships and develop and implement collaborative projects under national and European funding programmes.

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov highlighted the excellent collaboration during the joint forum Between Symbolism and Reality: Women as Subjects of Power, that was hosted by the University, and added that in his opinion the currently existing prejudices against women in power are slowly eroding and the inclusion of women in all social spheres must be encouraged.

Evelina Tsileva expressed gratitude for the opportunity for the Association to partner with the largest business university in Bulgaria, of which she is an alumna, and emphasized that the UNWE is the only organization in the country advocating for greater participation of women in politics and public administration, with the goal of fostering more women leaders who will take part in decision-making processes and the governance of the country. She noted that the organization's goal is to support women through training programmes and various events in developing their talents, cultivating their own leadership style, strengthening their negotiation skills and becoming innovators and thought leaders.

The Cooperation Agreement with the National Real Estate Association Builds on the Long-Standing Partnership

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and Daniela Grozeva, Chairwoman of the Management Board of the National Real Estate Association /NREA/, signed a Cooperation Agreement. The document formalizes the long-standing partnership between the two organizations and aims to build on the achievements of their hitherto collaboration.

The agreement provides for the expansion of joint initiatives aimed at supporting students’ education and professional development through internships and pre-graduation placements, business academies, public lectures, meetings with industry professionals, joint research projects and expert collaboration in the development of proposals for legislative changes in the real estate sector.

“The UNWE already has well-established traditions of cooperation with business and in organizing a number of business academies with leading companies. They give students the opportunity to build on their knowledge, meet experienced professionals and make an informed choice about their future careers”, emphasized Prof. Dimitrov.

The Chairwoman of NREA Daniela Grozeva noted that the Association and the UNWE have been working together successfully for years, and that the signing of Memorandum opens new opportunities for the development of this partnership. “Every student who chooses a career in the real estate sector will have the opportunity to find their place in one of the 350 companies that are members of NREA. The University prepares future specialists and we can provide them a real professional environment”, said Daniela Grozeva, adding that the Memorandum also enables the use of the academic expertise of the university’s lecturers and their expert input in discussions on the future policies and the legislative framework in the real estate sector.

The National Real Estate Association is the industry organization of real estate agencies in Bulgaria, with established international authority and publicly recognized active engagement. The Association brings together over 2 500 professionals in more than 30 locations, organized into 12 regional structures.

Students of Health Management Qualification at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies Received Their Certificates

At an official ceremony in the Ceremomial Hall the professional qualification certificates were awarded to students who successfully completed the postgraduate qualification in Health Management at the UNWE Institute of Postgraduate Studies /IPS/.

The event was attended by the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, the Vice Rector for Institutional and Business Cooperation and Student Policies Prof. Dr. Tsvetana Stoyanova, the Director of the Institute for Postgraduate Studies Assoc. Prof. Dr. Georgy Nikolov as well as lecturers, postgraduates, their relatives and guests.

Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov greeted the students and encouraged them to apply the knowledge they had acquired in their professional practice. UNWE Begins Strategic Cooperation with FactSet in Support of Future Financial Specialists

The UNWE and the global company FactSet marked the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at the training of highly qualified specialists in the areas of finance, capital markets and new technologies. Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov presented UNWE as the largest and most authoritative higher education institution in Bulgaria for preparing specialists in all areas of the economy, business and the public sector. He emphasized that the University consistently develops partnerships with leading international companies because they are the ones giving students the opportunity to acquire practical knowledge and build successful careers. The Rector noted that one of the University's main tasks is to spark young people's interest in new professional opportunities and to expose them to the real business environment while they are still studying.

The UNWE and Dr. Shterev Medical Complex Ltd. have launched a long-term partnership. The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and the Executive Director of Dr. Shterev Medical Complex Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivan Todorov signed a Memorandum of Cooperation.

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov noted that the University has been consistently developing partnerships with leading employers in order to expand students’ career opportunities and strengthen the relation between the higher education and the professional practice. “Students should be supported every step of their way. Our responsibility is not only to provide them with a high-quality education, but also to help them make a successful transition into the professional world through active partnerships with businesses and institutions”.

The Executive Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivan Todorov emphasized that many members of the hospital’s management team are UNWE graduates, making the partnership a natural extension of the strong relationship between the two institutions. “As hospital healthcare continues to evolve, the shortage of qualified professionals becomes increasingly evident. Public attention is often focused on the lack of medical specialists, but ensuring a sufficient number of well-trained professionals in management and administration is an equally significant challenge. We hope that this partnership will attract motivated UNWE students and help us establish a truly effective model of collaboration.”

The Memorandum expands the opportunities for students’ practical training and career development by providing access to internships and meetings with representatives from Dr. Shterev Medical Complex. The agreement also provides for the participation of the Medical Complex’s experts as guest lecturers, the development of joint projects and initiatives and the involvement of UNWE lecturers as consultants and subject-matter experts. In addition, the University will provide educational and professional development opportunities for specialists from Dr. Shterev Medical Complex through its Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree programmes.

Journalist Elena Rozberg Defended Her Doctoral Dissertation on Eurovision and Cultural Diplomacy

The journalist Elena Rozberg, Doctoral student at the International Relations Department and member of the Bulgarian team for the Eurovision Song Contest, defended her Doctoral dissertation on the Eurovision as a Specific Platform for Conducting Cultural Diplomacy. The Academic Supervisor of the dissertation is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Plamen Ralchev, Head of the International Relations Department.

In presenting her thesis, the Doctoral student emphasized that the Eurovision Song Contest should be viewed not only as a musical event, but also as a significant platform for cultural diplomacy, international communication and the construction of national image.

Elena Rozberg presented the academic contributions and the main conclusions of her research. “The successful international representation in the Eurovision Song Contest does not depend solely on the quality of the song and the performer. The best results are achieved when there is a professional synergy between the public broadcaster, the creative team, the performer and the communication strategy. The international recognition could be achieved through different models - by means of cultural specificity and a folklore code, through a universal emotional message, or through stage aesthetics. According to her, “there is no universal formula for success, but there are different paths to international representation. The international influence does not emerge directly from a cultural event, it’s built gradually through the accumulation of international visibility, reputation and symbolic capital”.

She noted that the research expands the political science understanding of cultural diplomacy through new analytical concepts, it develops an integrated research framework for analyzing the contest as a political-communication phenomenon and provides the first systematic political science study of Bulgaria’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest as an instrument of cultural diplomacy.

Among the main academic contributions of her work, Elena Rozberg highlighted the concept of Eurovision as a hybrid diplomatic-communication ecosystem as well as the introduction of the notion of “music as the emotional infrastructure of cultural diplomacy”. “The cultural diplomacy should be understood as a specific mechanism through which the states build their international presence. The international influence is not an event but a process.”

More than 8 100 prospective students have submitted applications to participate in the admissions ranking process for the UNWE 2026/2027 academic year. The data confirms the traditionally high level of interest in studying at Bulgaria’s largest and most prestigious higher education institution in economics, which provides a wide range of Bachelor’s degree programmes in the fields of Economics, Management, Law, Administration, Political Science, International Relations, Communications and Information Technologies.

After the application document submission period ends, the process of ranking the prospective students begins. On 7 July 2026, the results of the first stage of the ranking process, including the reserve applicants, will be announced.

in the period 8 - 11 July 2026 the admitted applicants will be able to enroll in their chosen programme or confirm their desire to participate in the following stages of the ranking process. During the same period, the reserve applicants must also confirm their participation in order to keep the opportunity to be ranked in the subsequent stages.

The second stage of the ranking process will give the applicants who were not admitted to their first-choice programme, or who were not ranked during the first stage, the opportunity to take available places according to their admission score and the preferences they have submitted. The enrollment process for applicants admitted after the second stage will take place in the period 15 - 17 July 2026.

On 21 July 2026, the results of the third stage of the ranking process will be announced, which will continue the process of filling the available places in the programmes.

The prospective students should carefully monitor the announced deadlines and follow the instructions for enrollment and confirmation of their participation in the subsequent stages of the ranking process. Failure to meet the specified deadlines will result in the loss of the allocated place or the right to participate in future ranking stages.

The newly admitted students at UNWE have the right to apply for accommodation in a student dormitory. The submission of documents will take place in the period 8 July - 7 August 2026 through the information system Web-Student, and the accommodation process for the ranked students will take place in the period 1 - 18 September 2026.

UNWE and the Medical University of Sofia Signed a Memorandum of Cooperation

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and the Rector of the Medical University of Sofia Prof. D.Sc. /Med./ Boycho Landzhov signed a Memorandum of Cooperation marking the beginning of a new stage in their academic partnership.

The Memorandum is an expression of the shared commitment of both universities to combine their academic expertise and research potential in support of the development of higher education, scientific research and the training of highly qualified specialists capable to meet the current societal and economic demands.

“I am confident that the cooperation between the UNWE and the Medical University of Sofia will create new opportunities for the advancement of science, education and innovation. Bringing together the expertise of the two universities will be a benefit not only to our lecturers and students, but also to society at large. Together we will develop interdisciplinary projects and educational initiatives that will meet the ever-evolving demands of the job market”, said Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov.

In his turn, the Rector of the Medical University of Sofia Prof. D.Sc. /Med./ Boycho Landzhov expressed his contentment with the signing of the Memorandum and noted that the partnership between the two universities will expand the opportunities for scientific collaboration, the exchange of good practices and the implementation of shared educational and research initiatives.

By signing the Memorandum, the parties express their commitment to active cooperation in a number of areas, including the development and implementation of national and international projects; the establishment of collaborative research teams; the preparation of collaborative scientific publications; the organization of national student competitions, contests, discussions and educational forums as well as the development of joint interdisciplinary Master's degree programmes.

The partnership also provides for the organization of joint academic events, public lectures, training sessions and visits involving lecturers and students; the participation of lecturers from both universities as consultants and reviewers in the development of textbooks, teaching materials and research projects as well as the mutual promotion of jointly implemented initiatives and their achievements.

The agreement places special emphasis on the advancement of the universities’ career centers, the organization of joint career forums, the promotion of student internship opportunities and professional development as well as the active dialogue with state institutions, civic society and national and global organizations.

The signing of the Memorandum is another step towards the establishment of a sustainable academic partnership between the UNWE and the Medical University of Sofia. “I hope that this partnership will be beneficial for our students. It could be said that the University already has established traditions and good practices when it comes to organizing business academies with various partners. These academies involve our most motivated students, giving them the opportunity, through lectures, discussions and meetings with leading professionals, to build upon their theoretical knowledge, better prepare for the challenges of the labour market and make informed choices about their future professional development”, said Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov.

The Executive Director of the Bulgarian Associationfor People Management Emil Minev, Coordinator for the implementation of the cooperation agreement, shared Association’s experience in organizing HR academies aimed at supporting young professionals and those entering the professions. “A certification programme has also been developed, involving established professionals with many years of experience. The signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the University and the Bulgarian Association for People Management establishes a foundation for long-term joint initiatives and new opportunities for all UNWE students and faculty members, as well as for the HR community.

The Bulgarian Association for People Management /BAPM/ is a non-governmental, non-profit organization established to promote best professional practices in human capital management and development. Through its activities, it aims to increase the value organizations create and contribute to enhancing people’s potential and professional development.

The Association also works to support and develop professionals in the field of human resource management, raise the status of the profession, and establish high standards of professional practice aligned with global trends and best practices in the field.

The Second Class of Appraisers of Cultural and Artistic Valuables Graduated from the UNWE Institute of Postgraduate Studies

The UNWE Library hosted the official ceremony for awarding the certificates of professional qualification to the second class of graduates who completed the postgraduate qualification programme in Management and Valuation of Cultural and Artistic Assets organized by the UNWE Institute of Postgraduate Studies /IPS/.

The programme is the first university postgraduate qualification programme in Bulgaria leading to the acquisition of the professional qualification of Expert Appraiser of Cultural and Artistic Assets. For the second consecutive year, it has reaffirmed its position as the only university educational programme in this professional field, implemented within the professional area of Administration and Management, combining academic training, practical education and research activities. A key focus of the postgraduate qualification is the process of appraising the cultural assets and works of art, with the objective to equip the participants with methodologies for the financial and insurance valuation of artefacts. The programme is led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Katya Mihaylova from the UNWE Economic Sociology Department.

The ceremony was opened by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Katya Mihailova. She welcomed the graduates, lecturers and official guests and introduced the guests of the ceremony – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Geory Nikolov, Director of the UNWE Institute for Postgraduate Studies and vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the UNWE Management and Administration Faculty, and Chief Assist. “Welcome to the most beautiful place in our university – the University Library”, addressed the graduates Assoc. Prof. Mihaylova, emphasizing the symbolism of the venue. She expressed thankfulness to the University Library for hosting the event. In her welcoming remarks, she highlighted the development of the programme during its second year and emphasized the successful partnership between the Institute for Postgraduate Studies and the Chamber of Independent Appraisers in Bulgaria. As part of this collaboration, an agreement has been signed for the joint development of a course leading to the acquisition of professional certification for the valuation of movable cultural property. Specialized educational and methodological materials are already being prepared for the training and examination required to obtain appraisal certification. Assoc. Prof. Mihaylova outlined the practical focus of the training and noted that the second class of trainees works on real assignments commissioned by Bulgarian collectors and prepares expert valuations of cultural property and works of art.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Georgy Nikolov greeted the graduates and emphasized the importance of the knowledge they had acquired and the efforts they had made: “This is a truly ceremonial and significant finale. It is always exciting to present a diploma to someone who has dedicated effort to building upon and improving oneself in order to become even more valuable to our society”.

The Chairperson of the Chamber of Independent Appraisers in Bulgaria Chief Assist. Dr. Nigohos Kanaryan highlighted the sustainable development of the partnership between the two institutions: “I am a financier, and in the financial market there is an expression – two points are necessary to establish a trend. And we already have a trend between the two institutions”. He emphasized that the training provided by the programme changes the way future experts appraisers perceive cultural heritage: “I believe that you will view these movable objects not as something displayed behind a glass or kept in a case, but simply as a value and as an art. You can determine their worth because you understand their value, not just their price”.

The professional qualification certificates were awarded by the lecturers and official guests, who shared inspiring messages with the graduates.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shteryo Nozharov, lecturer at the UNWE Economics Department and also lecturer in the postgraduate qualification program in Management and Valuation of Cultural and Artistic Assets, highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary training: “The cultural property market could not grow sustainably and develop without people like you, who have received truly interdisciplinary training, academic training, academic preparation and university-level education. I firmly believe that you will continue to move forward, and we, as lecturers, will be proud of you”.

Go forward with spirituality!”, remarked Prof. D.Sc./Soc./ Michail Mirchev from the UNWE Political Science Department, emphasizing the role of spirituality in the development of society.

Out of 59 Master`s degree students of the programme in Health Management, 37 have achieved grades higher than 5.50. It is an indicator to the efforts invested and the quality of the education. We have shared these three semesters together and at the end of this journey we will not try to convince you that you chose the right specialization”.

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov outlined the importance of the Master’s degree programme in Health Management, describing it as traditional, sustainable, successful and one of the university’s most sought-after programmes. He related the topic to his own participation in an international forum in France dedicated to security, and noted: “Security is not only a matter of the military sphere, it is inextricably related to the healthcare.” Prof. Dimitrov encouraged the graduates to put the knowledge and skills they acquired at the University into practice in their professional careers and urged them to become capable and responsible leaders.

The Minister of Healthcare Katya Ivkova, UNWE graduate, expressed gratitude for the invitation and noted that the financial management is a challenging and multidisciplinary programme that requires knowledge in various areas, such as economics, finance, management and health policy. “You are now aware that the Health Management is not an easy discipline. The UNWE is a university that looks after its students and creates opportunities for professional development”, said the Minister, sharing her personal experience from her years as a student.

“Today is the moment when you see the results of your efforts and receive tangible proof of all the hours of hard work and perseverance you have invested. The Rector Discussed Future Initiatives in the Field of Nuclear Security and Energy with a Representative of Pennsylvania State University

Within the framework of the implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the UNWE and Pennsylvania State University /Penn State/, the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov met with Matthew David Zerphy – Assistant Dean for Operations, College of Engineering, Penn State.

The meeting was also attended by Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the UNWE Nuclear Security Support Center and the Institute for Enhancing Research Capacity in the Field of the Nuclear Industry and Nuclear Security, lecturer at the UNWE National and Regional Security Department.

During the conversation, the possibilities for developing joint educational and research initiatives related to the nuclear security, energy, risk management, cybersecurity of critical infrastructure and the training of highly qualified specialists were discussed.

Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov outlined the importance of the active international partnership and the necessity for universities to pool expertise and resources to address the challenges facing the modern energy. “We believe the role of universities is not only to provide quality education, but also to create an environment for innovation, scientific exchange and training of specialists who can meet the demands of strategic sectors. The development of competencies in the field of energy, technology and security is among the priorities for UNWE”, noted Prof. Dimitrov and added that the cooperation with leading international academic institutions provides new opportunities for students, lecturers and researchers. “We strive to create conditions for our students and researchers to be part of global processes in science and technology. The exchange of knowledge and joint work with established partners such as Penn State will contribute to the development of new educational formats and scientific initiatives”, concluded the Rector.

Matthew David Zerphy expressed contentment with the opportunities for expanding the cooperation between the two universities and emphasized the importance of the practical focus of future initiatives. According to him the development of academic international cooperation is an important prerequisite for the exchange of expertise, promotion of innovation and creation of new opportunities for research in areas of key importance for the future of the energy sector. He outlined the importance of joint initiatives aimed at increasing the energy security, strengthening the cybersecurity of critical energy infrastructure and training specialists capable of responding to the technological challenges.

The meeting discussed specific opportunities for organizing joint training, scientific forums, exchange of lecturers and students as well as participation in international projects. Emphasis was placed on the application of new technologies, Artificial Intelligence and digital solutions to increase the security and efficiency in the energy sector.

The meeting is part of the consistent efforts of UNWE to expand the international academic cooperation and develop initiatives with leading universities in strategic scientific and educational areas.

The Series of Seminars on Small Modular Reactors Held at the UNWE Were Closed

The UNWE and the U.S. Department of State closed the third and final workshop on the Programme FIRST /Foundation Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology/, part of the series of stakeholder workshops examining the opportunities for integrating small modular reactors /SMRs/ into Bulgaria’s energy mix. The workshop at the UNWE concluded a programme of technical cooperation events that has brought together experts from the energy sector, academia and industry for more than two years.

Launched in 2019, the FIRST Programme is a flagship initiative for countries exploring the potential of nuclear power, and particularly SMRs, to meet their energy demands at the highest security, safety and non-proliferation standards. In Bulgaria, the programme engages a broad coalition, including the government, energy-sector and private-sector partners, to improve the structured and evidence-based analysis of small modular reactor technologies.

The UNWE Vice-Rector for International Affairs Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov, welcomed the participants on behalf of the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov. “The development of such projects is inextricably linked to issues of investment, financial sustainability, risk management and long-term competitiveness of the economy. Today’s discussion is important not only for the institutions and organizations represented in this hall, but also for our students. At the UNWE, we are develop successful programmes in the field of nuclear security and training specialists who will play a key role in the future development of the sector”, noted Assoc. Small modular reactors can play an important role in the decarbonization and competitiveness of the Bulgarian economy", said the Deputy Minister of Energy Dr. Lubomira Gancheva.

In his remarks, H. Martin McDowell, Charge d'Affaires of the US Embassy in Sofia, explained: "This programme is an important element in our ongoing bilateral energy relationship. We are proud to support Bulgaria's ambition to be a regional energy hub, to provide decision-makers with authoritative and up-to-date information when considering small modular reactors, and to share international best practices and responsible approaches to emerging technologies".

The finale of the series of stakeholder workshops marks an important milestone in U.S.–Bulgarian civil nuclear energy cooperation, marking the transition from structured information gathering and analysis to planning and evaluating the investment opportunities as Bulgaria enters the next phase of its nuclear energy assessment. The United States remains committed to supporting Bulgaria through continued cooperation under the FIRST Programme.

Before the event the UNWE Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov held a working meeting with John Conlon and representatives of the FIRST Program team. During the conversation, the possibilities for expanding the cooperation between the UNWE and the international partners on the initiative were discussed as well as future joint activities in the field of nuclear security, personnel training and the development of expert potential in the energy sector.

The National Association of Mediators /NAM/ and the University signed a Memorandum of Cooperation. The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and Milena Guncheva, Chairwoman of NAM’s Management Board, signed the document.

The partnership agreement includes joint initiatives aimed at providing enhanced opportunities for students' career development and professional realization through the organization of internships, traineeships, and pre-graduation internships, public lectures and discussions, meetings with industry professionals, conducting surveys and research in the fields of communications, media, economics, and management, as well as joint scientific events, training programmes, competitions, and other activities of mutual interest.

Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov emphasized that the University not only educates, but also creates conditions that encourage the young people to find their path for professional development. "The mediation is a very important part of our lives, and our students are very active in this field. They participate in various initiatives and have received numerous awards from national and international competitions in mediation", noted the Rector and pointed out various forms of partnership that allow the enhancement of academic knowledge through practical experience.

Milena Guncheva presented the activities of the National Association of Mediators and shared about the good joint work of the Association with lecturers from the UNWE. She noted that the signing of the Memorandum will build on what has been achieved and will enable the implementation of many new projects and initiatives that will help the young people to acquire new skills for constructive communication and conflict resolution, to upgrade their knowledge and to be successfully realized in the modern dynamic social environment.

The National Association of Mediators /NAM/ is a non-governmental organization for public benefit, registered in Sofia in 2005, which works to promote mediation and other alternative dispute resolution methods in the country. NAM members are co-authors of the Mediation Act and of legislative initiatives supporting the development of mediation as a profession. NAM works to promote the European recommendations and directives in the field of mediation.

Trends in the Performing Arts Development Were Examined by the Third Forum for Sustainable Development of the Performing Arts in Bulgaria

The Third Forum for Sustainable Development of the Performing Arts in Bulgaria, organized by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilyana Tomova Center for Media Studies, Audiovisual Policy and Cultural Industries at UNWE, Krastyo Sarafov National Academy of Theater and Film Arts, Prof. Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music, the Union of Artists in Bulgaria, the International Theater Festival: Varna Summer and the Bulgarian Music Association, examined the results of the national representative sociological survey on the participation of Bulgarian citizens in the musical performing arts, with a special emphasis on classical music. The event was hosted by Prof. Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music.

She noted that the data shows a sustained positive trend in overall attendance over the past four years, driven by the gradual recovery of audiences after the crisis periods, and the growth of incomes. However, the attendance at the opera, ballet, and classical music remains critically low. Over the past year, 81.6% of Bulgarian citizens have not attended an event in the field of classical music, opera, or ballet even once. Only 13.9% attended between one and three times, 2.9% between four and seven times, 0.6% between eight and twelve times, and only 1% could be defined as a regular audience with more than 12 visits per year. Limited but positive progress has been reported - the share of non-participants has decreased by approximately 3% over the last four years.

The study reveals significant differences between the age groups. The highest levels of non-participation are observed in the 18-29 age group /85.9%/ and in people over 65 /85.4%/. In the 30-39 group the share is 84.6%, and in the group 40-49 – 79.2%. The lowest levels are observed in the 50-65 group /76.8%/, which also emerges as the most active audience – 17.9% attend events between one and three times a year, and 4% – between eight and twelve times.

The main barriers include price restrictions, lack of free time, uneven access to cultural infrastructure outside the big cities, as well as deepening socio-economic inequalities related to education and income.

The study was conducted by Alpha Research in the period 27 February – 9 March 2026 through direct interviews conducted using tablets, and tracks the dynamics of cultural participation for the fourth consecutive year.

The Forum focused on the current challenges facing the musical and performing arts and the necessity of targeted policies for sustainable development and expanding access to culture. Prof. Dr. Sava Dimitrov, Rector of the National Academy of Music, emphasized a systemic problem in the musical and performing arts sector - the premature entry of young performers into professional practice and the disruption of the relation between the education and the professional realization, which creates risks both for the quality of the artistic product and for the sustainable development of the personnel, and Denitsa Ezekieva from the Union of Artists in Bulgaria noted the right to culture of Bulgarian citizens as a constitutionally guaranteed right and the necessity of its real guarantee through effective public policies /in the pictures below/.

ENGAGE.EU UNWE Study Tour 2026: NextGen Entrepreneurs

The UNWE welcomed a delegation of international students within the framework of the ENGAGE.EU Study Tour: NextGen Entrepreneurs training programпе. The three-day initiative brought together 30 participants from nine ENGAGE.EU partner universities, creating a dynamic environment for collaboration, learning and entrepreneurial experimentation.

This year’s Study Tour combined academic knowledge, practical teamwork and cultural exploration. The initiative aimed to equip the students with the necessary mindsets and tools to successfully navigate today’s rapidly changing entrepreneurial environment, while encouraging them to consider their role as future drivers of change in Europe.

The programпе started on 17 June 2026 with a warm welcome at the UNWE. The participants were welcomed by experts from the international team of the University, and the event was officially opened by the UNWE Vice Rector for International Affairs Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov.

The first day began with the UNWE Hunt – a campus treasure hunt that took place in the Open Space of Campus K and gave the participants the opportunity to get to know each other and the University.

The day continued with an academic session on the basics of entrepreneurship and the European perspective presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zornitsa Yordanova, who introduced the participants to the key challenges faced by the entrepreneurs. This was not a motivational lecture filled with stories about success, but a session that looked at failure as a natural part of the learning process – an approach that the participants clearly appreciated.

Then the students then began working on their group projects. Their task was to develop entrepreneurial ideas in teams. In the introductory session, they defined their roles and drew up team agreements, and it was these teams that became the main units through which ideas were developed and refined.

The second day’s programme included Academic Session 2, dedicated to the entrepreneurial challenges. It was led by Doctoral student Iliyan Boychev from the UNWE Economcis of Trade Department, who presented a comprehensive overview of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Bulgaria. The insider view – where the opportunities are hide, what structural challenges exist, and how the local startup ecosystem actually functions – was extremely valuable for the international participants.

Dr. Christian Zhelev presented Academic Session 3 - Programmes at the UNWE and Entrepreneurial Initiatives in Bulgaria, and Nadia Manova – representative of the Board of Leaders at UNWE, introduced the participants to the initiatives implemented so far, and the upcoming student projects.

The second day provided another session – Engaging Public Presence. It was led by improv coach and entrepreneur Zlatin Tsvetkov, who introduced the participants to practices for effective presentation and communication of ideas. With a professional approach and constructive feedback, he prepared the teams for their upcoming presentations. The teams had already made significant progress in developing their concepts, and were preparing for the final stage of the programme – the presentation of the projects.

The day ended with the Cultural Mixer social program, within which the participants had the opportunity to experience Bulgarian culture through folk dances, music, and nestinar performances.

The last day began with final adjustments to student projects focused on social entrepreneurship, local impact and sustainable solutions. Each team had the opportunity to present their idea to a jury and demonstrate not only the viability of the concept, but also the ability to communicate it clearly and convincingly.

The evaluation process highlighted the variety of ideas developed during the Study Tour – from socially oriented initiatives to innovative business solutions aimed at overcoming contemporary challenges.

The big winners are the participants who formed the Red Team, who developed the idea of the Health Stick – a device that checks whether meat and dairy products are edible, under the motto Know before You Throw.

The programme concluded with a feedback session and an awards ceremony led by the ENGAGE.EU Institutional Coordinator Assoc. Prof. D.Sc. Mihail Musov. He greeteed the participants on the progress made over the three days, as well as the team of the International Affair Directorate for the impeccable organization of Study Tour Sofia. Outside the university environment, the programme provided participants with the opportunity to explore Sofia through a city safari and treasure hunt, organized with the support of Erasmus Student Network. The initiativepresented the city’s cultural wealth and historical heritage, fostered teamwork and problem-solving skills in an informal setting.

The ENGAGE.EU Study Tour: NextGen Entrepreneurs held at the UNWE was much more than an academic programme. It was an experience that brought together different perspectives, encouraged experimentation, and created a sense of shared purpose among the participants. By combining academic expertise, practical workshops, and cultural exchange, the initiative demonstrated the importance of international cooperation in shaping the next generation of entrepreneurs. For the students who took part in the Study Tour, the three days in Sofia were an opportunity not only to develop their ideas, but also to build confidence, broaden their horizons, and become part of the European community of the ENGAGE.EU university alliance, united by the pursuit of information and significant societal impact.

Through its initiatives, the ENGAGE.EU university alliance constantly creates new opportunities for students from partner universities, and programs such as Study Tour play a key role in preparing young people to be leaders, creators and active participants in civil society.

A comprehensive assessment of the state and development of administrative capacity in the public administration was presented at the UNWE using an integrated indicator that measures the ability of administrative structures to ensure ь good governance. The study is part of Project No. KP-06-PN85/17 - Research and Assessment of the Capacity of the State Administration in Bulgaria and Guidelines for Good Governance funded by the Scientific Research Fund. The study, in its ninth edition, involves the UNWE Institute of Economics and Politics, Dimitar Tsenov Academy of Economics in Svishtov, and the Institute of Public Administration, whose representatives attended the meeting: the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, Assoc. The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov emphasized the significance of the project and its contribution to the development of public administration in Bulgaria: “This is a major, long-term project that provides valuable information on the state and development of the public administration and outlines important directions for its future development. As a university, our mission is not only to generate knowledge but also to communicate the results of such research to both the public and the institutions and individuals who set the direction of administrative policies. At the official ceremony on awarding the prizes for Best Administration we saw the positive and motivating side of the results. Today’s discussion will focus on the factors that form the overall picture. The analysis clearly shows that the frequent political and organizational changes lead to a decline in administrative capacity. The measurement is a prerequisite for better governance, and the Index provides a reliable assessment scale based on a rigorous methodology. We are pleased that the UNWE actively supports and participates in this important process”.

“Among the main tasks we have set for ourselves at the Institute of Economics and Politics alongside the academic publications and research projects, is to conduct analyses that have direct practical benefits for society”, said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov, Director of the Institute of Economics and Politics. “A large portion of our projects are carried out with the support of national and international institutions and are aimed at studying key societal processes.” He noted that the research raises a number of important questions including the tracking of the good and bad practices in the public administration, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of administrative structures and analyzing the changes compared to previous studies. Of particular interest is the question of whether there is a difference between the external evaluation of the administration and its self-assessment.

Assoc. Prof. Yanko Hristozov said that in collecting information for the study, they encountered obstacles related to the insufficient activity and cooperation of the structures, which made the analysis difficult. "That is why we will seek support at the highest institutional level, including from the government, to provide a more complete and reliable basis for future research. If I have to use a comparison, the state administration reminds me of a student before a session – she has the necessary potential, knowledge and opportunities to cope successfully, but often postpones taking the necessary actions with the thought that it will start next Monday."

Prof. Dr. Zdravko Lyubenov defined the presentation of the results as a natural completion of a long and in-depth research process. "Today's event is the culmination of hard work, in-depth analyses and successful overcoming of a number of methodological and methodological challenges. The result is an objective and comprehensive assessment of the state of public administration in the context of accelerated digitalization and growing public expectations. I am convinced that the information presented will be useful for all levels of government and will serve as a basis for following actions and reforms.

Prof. D.Sc. Borislav Borisov, researcher at the Institute and co-author of the study, emphasized that the problems found are systematic and persistent, which makes the study particularly important. In his presentation, he analyzed the administrative environment in 2025, characterized by political instability, which does not create favorable conditions for achieving high results in the public administration. He drew attention to the composition and structure of the state administration, noting that the issue of its number cannot be considered independently. According to him, it is not decisive whether the administration is large or small, but what functions it performs and what results it achieves. The data show that since 2020 there has been a distinct deterioration in administrative capacity, even if there is a slight improvement for 2025.

Within the framework of the study, 28 elements of administrative capacity were analyzed, and it was found that the external partners of the state administration rate its work lower compared to the self-assessments of the administration. Among the main conclusions, a number of persistent systematic problems stand out: lack of sustainable mechanisms for transforming individual knowledge into institutional memory and organizational learning; insufficient use of data as a basis for decision-making; limited effect of digitalization on the improvement of administrative processes; as well as insufficiently effective and responsible application of innovation and artificial intelligence. The study also found the lack of a knowledge management system, a formal approach to risk management and other deficits in management practices. An important part of the study is the formulated recommendations. Among them Prof. Borissov highlighted the necessity of building an Administrative Capacity Monitoring System to support the transition from accountability based on available resources to accountability based on the results and effects achieved. It is also recommended to rethink the composition and structure of the Administrative Reform Council. As key priorities for the development of the public administration were indicated: moving from a debate on numbers to a debate on productivity, managing data as a public asset, developing a learning administration, responsible and practical introduction of artificial intelligence, strengthening managerial responsibility for the results achieved, more active involvement of stakeholders through feedback mechanisms and reporting on their assessments; as well as a shift from governance focused on compliance with rules and procedures to results-oriented management and societal impact.

The finals of the XXIX Tennis Tournament for the UNWE Rector`s Cup took place at the Bonsist Sports Complex. The competition was organized by St. George the Victorious Academic Sports Club and the UNWE Physical Education and Sports Department. This year's edition was attended by 15 competitors in singles, 12 couples and 6 participants in the category Individual 68+.

On 4 June 2026, the third edition of the competition was held under the auspices of the 70-years-old Physical Education and Sport Department. It was organized by Assoc. The study is the fruit of the long-term work of Prof. D.Sc. /Econ./ Ivan Georgiev, doyen of the Industrial Business Department, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dimitar Blagoev, lecturer at the Department.

The book was awarded by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dimitar Blagoev, who emphasized that the idea for the research and publication came from Prof. D.Sc. /Econ./ Ivan Georgiev, who is the “living memory” of the Industrial Business Department.

“The edition aims to preserve the historical memory of the Industrial Business Department, to remain as an evidence to the life and scientific research over the years of the lecturers and scientists from the Department, an evidence to the development of the two main scientific directions and how they have contributed to the creation of scientific directions in other departments, because even today, in the digital world, the phrase “What is said flies away, what is written remains” is still valid”, shared Assoc. Prof. Blagoev.

The book examines the development of the academic and scientific directions Business Investment Management and Business Innovation at the Industrial Business Department from 1948 to 2025, covering the three periods in their development - the period of the centrally planned economy, the transition period after 1989 and the period of the market economy. The authors study how the topics that were taught and, accordingly, were part of the research changed, who were the people who worked in these scientific directions, what is the legacy and how it continues in the research of Doctoral students and new scientific projects.

Closing Conference on a Project Related to the Chinese Initiative One Belt, One Road

At the UNWE was held the Closing Conference on the project The Chinese Belt and Road Initiative in the Black Sea Region: Analysis of Opportunities and Risks for Bulgaria, Headed by Prof. Dr. Georgy Chankov, Director of Europe-China Research Center and lecturer at the International Relations Department.

The event was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Vodenicharova, Vice Rector for Research, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov, Vice Rector for International Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Plamen Ralchev, Head of the International Relations Department; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svetla Boneva, Dean of the International Economics and Politics Department, Mr. Rady Naydenov, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Yasen Georgiev, Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Policy, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Antonina Habova and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elizabeth Yoneva from the International Relations Department, as well as lecturers, researchers and representatives of the academic community.

The Conference was opened by the Vice Rector for International Affairs Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov. In his welcoming remarks he highlighted the significance of the fundamental studies, financed by the Scientific Research Fund, and used Prof. Chankov's project as an example of successfully implemented research. According to him, the project is important for the University also because of the active cooperation with China, he also noted that the UNWE has over 50 agreements with Chinese universities and in recent years our university has hosted significant forums with the participation of large Chinese delegations. He also emphasized the dual Bachelor's and Master's programmes with Chinese universities - Hebei University of Economics and Business /HUEB/, Tianjin Foreign Studies University /TFSU/ and Shanghai Jiao Tong University /SJTU/. Assoc. Prof. Hristozov greeted Prof. Chankov and the entire team for the achieved results and responsible management of the project and wished them to continue their research activities by completing new successful research initiatives.

The Vice Rector for Research Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Vodenicharova, who outlined the significance of the project for theUNWE and emphasized the strengthened cooperation with the academic institutions in Ningbo /Ningbo University of Technology, NBUT/. Assoc. Prof. Vodenicharova said she hopes the team will continue to evolve and strengthen the established partnerships.

Prof. Georgy Chankov presented the project and the achieved results. He expressed thankfulness to the participants from the research collective and to the UNWE administration for the provided support, as well as to the Scientific Research Fund, underlining the significance of the Fund’s financial support for the completion of worthwhile scientific research. According to him, the project contributed to the accumulation of research results and the broadening of international academic cooperation. Among the main activities Prof. Chankov singled out the participation of the research team with reports in various conferences, the preparation of publications indexed in reputable scientific databases and the work visits to China. He emphasized the successful cooperation with the Confucius Institute and the established relations with the Center of Cooperation between China and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and with the Ningbo University of Technology. These relations provide the opportunity for future collaboration on joint research projects and publications. A collective monograph summarizing the achieved scientific results was also prepared within the framework of the project. Prof. Chankov noted that despite the difficulties associated with the pandemic, the delay in indexation and the workload of the participants, the main tasks have been completed.

The Permanent Secretary of teh Ministry of Defence Mr. Rady Naydenov outlined the importance of UNWE as an institution that prepares a workforce with successful professional realization in the state administration, diplomacy and international relations. He noted that the combination of solid theoretical preparation with practical experience is a key ingredient for the creation of competent professionals. According to him, despite the advancement of digitalization and AI the personal contact, dialogue and the ability to communicate remain the foundation of diplomatic work. He emphasized the necessity for Bulgaria to think strategically and look for its place in the constantly evolving global order. In conclusion, he expressed desire for closer cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UNWE, noting the necessity for a well-prepared and competent workforce in the fields of diplomacy and international relations.

The implementation of the project The Chinese Belt and Road Initiative in the Black Sea Region: Analysis of Opportunities and Risks for Bulgaria has significantly contributed to the advancement of UNWE's international academic cooperation and opens up new opportunities for research dialogue, joint research and active assertion of the University’s place in the global academic environment.

UNWE and Pennsylvania State University Signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the Fields of Nuclear Security, Energy and Scientific Research

The UNWE and the Pennsylvania State University operating through its Engineering College, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation, marking the beginning of strategic, academic and research cooperation in the fields of nuclear security, energy, cybersecurity and the training of qualified specialists for the nuclear industry. The document was signed online in accordance with the established accepted practices for international institutional cooperation.

In the online meeting took part representatives of both institutions - the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, the Vice Rector for International Affairs Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov and Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the UNWE Nuclear Security Support Center and the Institute of Enhancing the Research Capacity in the Nuclear Industry and Nuclear Security as well as a lecturer at the UNWE National and Regional Security Department, and from Pennsylvania State University - Tonya Peeples, Dean at the University, Matthew David Zerphy and Robert Rabb.

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov welcomed the participants and presented the UNWE as the largest business university in Bulgaria and Southeastern Europe with approximately 20 000 students and a 106 years of history. “The focus of the present memorandum is the strengthening of capacity in nuclear security and energy. It is vital for us to build partnerships with leading world universities like Pennsylvania State University, which will contribute to the preparation of a new generation of specialists in strategically important areas", emphasized Prof. Dimitrov. He pointed out the significance of nuclear energy for Bulgaria in the context of the expansion of the sector and the construction of new nuclear capabilities: “Bulgaria is in a period of serious development of its nuclear and energy infrastructure. Along with the necessity of nuclear security experts, the demand for highly qualified nuclear engineering personnel also grows. This is why we working on the creation of new educational programmes and broadening the research in the field”. During the event Prof. Dimitrov officially announced the start of the partnership between the two universities by characterizing it as a “model of the globalized world" founded on shared knowledge, research cooperation and common goals.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov greeted the meeting participants and outlined the significance of the international academic cooperation for the UNWE: “For the UNWE the international cooperation is a strategic priority. We are confident that partnering with Pennsylvania State University will provide new opportunities for academic exchange, research and development of innovative educational programmes”.

Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov expressed thankfulness to his colleagues at Pennsylvania State University for their prompt response and support in developing the partnership which was realized with the support of the U.S. Department of State. “This partnership is an important step in the development of our educational and research activities in the nuclear security field. We plan to work together on projects, as well as organize events related to the cybersecurity of nuclear infrastructure", said Prof. Spasov and emphasized that the cooperation will aid the development of a nuclear security Master’s programme and future initiatives in the nuclear engineering field.

On behalf of Pennsylvania State University Tonya Peeples expressed her contentment with the signing of the memorandum and outlined the significance of the international academic cooperation. “We are excited to mark the beginning of this partnership. We believe that the future belongs to clean energy, safety and security. Pennsylvania State University has made substantial investments in the nuclear security education and research, integrating advances in cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies”. She stated that the work on realizing specific initiatives begins after signing the document and expressed her confidence that the future partnership will include students from both institutions.

Matthew David Zerphy emphasized the importance of the international cooperation for the development of human capital and new technologies in the nuclear field. “The cooperation between the UNWE and Pennsylvania State University will create outstanding opportunities for exchange of knowledge, human capital development and participation in research on modern reactor technologies. We eagerly await the future visits of lecturers and students as well as the joint work on research projects", he said.

The Memorandum framework includes the development and realization of joint educational and research initiatives and the exchange of lecturers, researchers, experts and students as well as the organization of conferences, seminars, study sessions and other academic forums. Special emphasis was placed on the cooperation in the nuclear security, nuclear energy, risk management and cybersecurity of critical infrastructure fields. The two institutions will also collaborate on topics related to the application of AI in the nuclear industry and security, development of human capital and the preparation of highly qualified specialists for the demands of the energy sector. The partnership also envisions the exchange of academic data, research publications and good practices as well as participation in joint international projects and programmes supported by national and international organizations.

The signed Memorandum lays the foundation for a long-term strategic cooperation between the UNWE and Pennsylvania State University and opens up new opportunities for partnership in the education, scientific research and international academic cooperation in areas with key significance for the energy security, technological innovation and sustainable development.

Representatives of UNWE were among the special guests at the official opening of the new STEM Center at 95. Prof. Ivan Shishmanov Secondary School in Sofia. The event was attended by Chief Assist. Dr. Nikola Gaydarov, lecturer in the Economics of Tourism Department and Coordinator for the implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation with the School, as well as Atanas Dimitrov, Director of the Inter-University Center for Career Development /in the picture below in the center/. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of educational institutions, local authorities, partners of the School, teachers, pupils and parents, all united by the idea of a modern, practical and future-oriented education.

The participation of UNWE representatives in the event is a natural extension of the partnership with 95. Prof. Ivan Shishmanov Secondary School established with the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and the School Principal Yavor Ivanov. The Memorandum provides for lectures, training sessions, practical classes, joint projects and pupils` participation in the initiatives related to the business and tourism. The partnership is an expression of the UNWE commitment to building sustainable relations between the secondary education, higher education and the business sector by supporting the young people in their transition to a university environment and future professional careers.

The new STEM Center opened at the School, provides pupils with yet another opportunity to develop analytical thinking, digital skills, initiative and an entrepreneurial spirit. The specialized and vocational fields - including entrepreneurship, business administration and tour guiding - naturally align with the academic profile of the UNWE and provide access to university expertise, career prospects and practical knowledge.

Our Lecturers Participated in the Think Tank of the ENGAGE.EU Alliance in Toulouse

The Artificial Intelligence and its development for the benefit of society was the key topic that brought together twenty researchers from nine ENGAGE.EU partner universities at Toulouse Capitole University, France, for the new edition of the ENGAGE.EU Think Tank which took place in early June.

Our university was represented by Prof. Dr. Luben Boyanov, lecturer at the Information Technologies and Communications Department, and Chief Assist. Dr. Stoicho Dulevsky from the Public Legal Studies Department.

During the 4-days of the Forum, jurists, economists and digital technology experts shared their perspectives and discussed AI’s influence on the society and its ethical, societal and legal consequences. The conditions necessary for its responsible development were also examined with a focus on the regulatory, institutional and organizational frameworks for the development and deployment of AI systems. The programme also included numerous interdisciplinary discussions aimed at identifying new research topics with enhanced cooperation across Europe.

The participants united around the idea that such meetings have the potential to give impetus to the development of new projects and partnerships to support the elevation of AI in the coming years.

145 Prospective Students Participated in a General Competitive Exam in Mathematics in the Format of State Matriculation Exam at Our University

The UNWE jointly with the University of Economics – Varna, D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics – Svishtov and the University of Food Technologies – Plovdiv, held a General Competitive Exam in Mathematics in the format of State Matriculation Exam for general education preparation in which took part 145 prospective students.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Milena Dimova, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the UNWE Applied Informatics and Statistics Faculty and Head of Mathematics the Department, welcomed the pupils with the words: "As a result of the successful partnership between several universities in the country, the implementation of the General Competitive Exam in Mathematics has already become a good tradition. Mathematics is the foundation of economic education, but also a powerful tool for the development of logical thinking and intelligence. I believe that all of you, as prospective students, share this conviction once you have chosen to take this exam, so I greet you for that".

The Scientific Secretary of Mathematics Department Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maya Mikrenska welcomed the participants and presented the opportunities for development that the University provides to its future students. The beginning of the exam was given after the prospective student Simon Ayzele from 31. Ivan Vazov Secondary School for Foreign Languages and Mathematics in Sofia drew the Exam Option No. 1.
