UNWE Has Joined the Industry-Academia Network

The UNWE has joined the Industry-Academia Network, part of the Cybersecurity Skills Academy, a project on which the Vice Rector for International Affairs Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov, and the team from the International Affairs Directorate have been working over the past year. The network is focused on developing cybersecurity skills and strengthening the relation between the education and the business. This leading European initiative is carried out within the framework of the Digital Skills and Jobs Platform and brings together leading universities and tech giants such as Google, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, and others, aiming to create partnerships that integrate practical experience into the education.

As a member of the network, the UNWE will have the opportunity to work on key initiatives such as updating existing cybersecurity curriculum, developing new training programmes to build cybersecurity skills, establishing and promoting partnerships to provide access to cybersecurity training, engaging students in the network’s initiatives to develop their cybersecurity skills, establishing mentoring initiatives for students and underrepresented groups, and providing upskilling and reskilling opportunities for cybersecurity professionals.

UNWE’s participation in the initiative supports the growing necessity for practical skills and workforce training in the field of cybersecurity.

Winners in the National English Speech and Debate Tournament Have the Opportunity to be Admitted to Our University

The winners in the National English Speech and Debate Tournament organized by the BEST Foundation were awarded. For a consecutive year the UNWE hosted the event in which over 300 pupils in 8 to 12 grades from all over the country competed in various categories.

During the closing ceremony Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasil Petkov, Chairman of the Association of Language Schools in Bulgaria and Head of the UNWE International Economic Relations and Business Department, greeted the participants. “Being here has reminded me of the time when I was also a student. On behalf of the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov I would like to greet you on having gone through this three-day experience. Remember that you are all winners, regardless of the final result. You have the right to be proud of yourselves. Your teachers and parents also should be proud of you, and I would like to extend my greetings to all of them.”

The winners who are currently in 12^th grade will obtain a Certificate for a grade of Excellent 6 for admission to the UNWE for all specialities taught in English or for the specialities with English language teaching.

Our University Is the Host of the Sixth Edition of the BEST Foundation’s National English Speech and Debate Tournament

The sixth edition of the National English Speech and Debate Tournament was opened at the UNWE and will take place over three days - 17, 18, and 19 April. In the Tournament organized by the BEST Foundation pupils will compete in five categories in English: world schools-style debate, poetry interpretation, prose interpretation, artistic duet and original oratory speech.

Special guests at the event were H. Martin McDowell, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Bulgaria, Eric Brazil, Cultural and Educational Affairs Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria, Desislava Talyokova, Executive Director of America for Bulgaria Foundation, and Angela Rodel, Director of the Fulbright Commission.

Over 300 pupils in 8 to 12 grades from all over the country participate in the Tournament. In addition to pupils from Bulgaria, international participation is also expected, including a team from the Republic of North Macedonia which contributes to the intercultural exchange and broadens the scope of the Tournament, note the organizers.

The winners who are in 12^th grade this year, will obtain a Certificate for a grade of Excellent 6 for admission to the UNWE for all specialities taught in English or for the specialities with English language teaching.

The Executive Director of the BEST Foundation Vanya Zlateva /in the picture below/ outlined that the Bulgarian Tournament provides opportunities for freely practicing English, building relationships and skills in public speaking, delivering speeches and debating as well as for developing critical thinking.

In his greeting speech the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov /in the picture above/ presented a sort of “digital” profile of the University.

He emphasized that behind each of these numbers lies a history, traditions and a future built by young people like them.

Martin McDowell, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Bulgaria, greeted the audience in Bulgarian, adding: “Although it may seem like you make things look easy, we know that facing an audience and expressing your ideas is not easy and being challenged is even harder. And that is exactly what you do and you have developed this process almost to an art — to the ability to understand ideas, to listen carefully, to speak clearly and comprehensibly. In a world of increasing challenges, these are the qualities that the citizenship and leadership rely on. Creating a safe space for informed, engaged and insightful debates is the foundation of a healthy democracy. This is exactly what the BEST Foundation strives for — to bring together the brightest minds in Bulgaria and these are you.”

Desislava Talyokova from America for Bulgaria Foundation and Angela Rodel from the Fulbright Commission also greeted the participants.

The BEST Foundation maintains a strong team of volunteers—judges who are an essential part of the Tournaments’ success. With their help pupils improve their critical thinking skills and their ability to express themselves creatively, persuasively, and with sound reasoning.

Prof. Dr. Nikolay Dentchev Is Elected As Member of the Bulgarian Council for Economic Analysis at Bulgarian Council of Ministers

Prof. Dr. Nikolay Dentchev, Scientific Secretary and lecturer at the UNWE Entrepreneurship Department, was elected as member of the Bulgarian Council for Economic Analysis at Bulgarian Council of Ministers.

Nikolay Dentchev is a professor of social entrepreneurship. Until 2024, he developed his academic career in Belgium, teaching at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, working at Ghent University and at the Brussels campus of the Catholic University of Leuven. He has been a visiting lecturer at universities in Austria, Italy, the Netherlands and France. Under his supervision, 11 scholars have successfully defended their Doctoral dissertations. He is the author of over 60 international scholarly publications in the fields of social entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility, ESG and entrepreneurial ecosystems.

On March 31, 2026, the Bulgarian Council for Economic Analysis submitted its 2025 Annual Report to the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria, which includes an analysis of the current state of the Bulgarian economy, as well as analytical studies and recommendations prepared by the Council members on specialized topics, identifying medium- and long-term risks and opportunities facing the economy. The Bulgarian Council for Economic Analysis at Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria is responsible for analyzing key economic, macroeconomic and social issues and proposing appropriate policies and solutions. The Council consists of internationally recognized economists of undisputed academic authority who assess the challenges facing the Bulgarian economy and make policy recommendations to address them. It is an advisory body and includes respected economists from prestigious universities and research institutes, both from abroad and from Bulgaria.

The Council prepares independent analyses and opinions on specific issues regarding the state of the Bulgarian economy, the challenges and risks it faces, as well as possible policies and recommendations for addressing them. The main purpose of these opinions is to assist government authorities in making strategic decisions regarding the economic development, as well as to keep the Bulgarian public informed about the key economic issues. In addition to these statements, the Council organizes an Annual Economic Conference dedicated to the challenges and risks facing the Bulgarian, European and global economies.

Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov Participated in an International Study Visit to the USA under the American Government’s Programme FIRST

Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the Center for Nuclear Security Support and the Institute for Enhancing Research Capacity in the Field of the Nuclear Industry and Nuclear Security at UNWE, as well as lecturer at the UNWE National and Regional Security Department, took part in the international study visit Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) Workforce Development Technical Site Visits held in March 2026 in the USA.

As part of the Programme, the Bulgarian delegation, comprising representatives from academic institutions, government agencies and industry, visited leading universities, research centers, and companies in the field of nuclear energy in the states of Texas, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

The study visit began with an intensive programme at Texas A&M University where the participants were introduced to the nuclear engineering education programmes, laboratories and research centers, including initiatives related to Small Modular Reactors /SMRs/.

The delegation held meetings at the Center for Energy Development in Bay City, Texas, as well as with representatives of local institutions and business organizations involved in the development and public acceptance of nuclear energy.

A highlight of the Programme was the visit to Westinghouse Electric Company in Pennsylvania, where the participants were introduced to the modern technologies, including the AP1000 and AP300 reactors, as well as with training programmes for engineering and technical personnel. During the visit, Prof. Spasov also presented the UNWE activities in the field of nuclear security.

In Washington, D.C., meetings were held with key institutions such as the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as well as the Nuclear Energy Institute and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers /ASME/, where policies, standards, and best practices in nuclear energy and the training of specialists were discussed.

The participation of UNWE in this international initiative contributes to establishing the university as an active partner in global efforts to develop education and expert capacity in the field of nuclear security and new nuclear technologies.

International SpaceHACK for Sustainability 2026 Was Held at Our University

The international SpaceHACK for Sustainability 2026 was successfully held at the UNWE. The main organizer of the event is Arizona State University, and co-organizers in Bulgaria are the National Network for Sustainable Development SDSN Bulgaria and PMI Bulgaria Chapter.

Assoc. Prof. D.Sc. Michael Musov – Co-Chairman of SDSN Bulgaria, opened the event in Bulgaria. He greeted the participants on behalf of Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov – Rector of UNWE and Co-Chairman of SDSN Bulgaria, as well as on his own behalf, emphasizing that such initiatives, which require critical and analytical thinking and stimulate the development of innovative solutions to current social challenges, build the students as responsible and committed future leaders. According to his words: "Heroes are not like that only because of the victories they achieve. They are heroes primarily because of their way of thinking and responsible behavior".

On behalf of Arizona State University Dr. Kerri Rittschof, Director of Data Science & Analytics Unit, welcomed the participants. She pointed out that SpaceHACK is more than just a competition – "it's an opportunity to innovate, collaborate and achieve global impact". Prof. Dr. Svetlana Alexandrova also greeted the students on behalf of the International Economic Relations and Business Department and PMI Bulgaria Chapter, noting: "Your passion and creativity are the driving forces that will urge us to sustainable solutions for our planet". The keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Brian Cairns, Deputy Project Scientist at NASA and Columbia University.

In the event took part more than 500 students from five universities: Arizona State University – USA, UNWE, CY Cergy Paris University – France, Universidad Espíritu Santo /UEES/ and Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral /ESPOL/ – Ecuador, including 25 students from UNWE. During their participation, our students received mentoring support from Prof. Dr. Venelin Boshnakov – lecturer at the UNWE Statistics and Econometrics Department, and by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Plamen Milev – Lecturer at the UNWE Information Technologies and Communications Department.

During the two days of the international competition, participants used various satellite data to look for solutions to problems related to the climate change in the Alps, zero-emission supply chains and the development of coastal cities.

Next week, all students who presented solutions to the challenges set at SpaceHACK 2026 will be awarded official certificates of participation.

For the Ninth Consecutive Time the UNWE Is the Home of the Book for a Week

The IX edition of the University Book Week was officially opened - an event that has confirmed itself as an important part of the university's academic and cultural life.

"We started this initiative with the idea that the education that students receive at our university should be upgraded with the development of a general culture, love for the book, with the idea that the book adds value to the human growth. Today we mark the beginning of an inspiring week dedicated to the speech, meetings with authors and the exchange of ideas", outlined the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov.

Official guests at the opening were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dragomir Stefanov, Deputy Mayor of Students District, Martin Hristov, owner of ERGO Publishing House, Petya Gospodinova, Chairperson of the Management Board of the Bulgarian Book Association, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kalina Ivanova, Director of Sts. Cyril and Methodius National Library, the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, Kaloyan Stefanov, Chairman of the Student Council, Nicole Fox, Public Communications Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria and Assoc. Within the frameworks of the opening Prof. Dimitrov also focused on the exhibition Benjamin Franklin and the Bulgarian Revival, organized by Sts. Cyril and Methodius National Library jointly with the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria. "The exhibition reveals a lesser-known, but significant aspect of the activities of Prof. Stefan Bobchev – the founder of our university, who was the first to popularize the ideas of Benjamin Franklin in Bulgaria."

In her speech Mrs. Nicole Fox, Public Communications Counsellor at the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria, noted that the UNWE is an institution that has found its place in the world and that forms the next generation of leaders by working for the development of knowledge in Bulgaria. She expressed thankfulness to the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov about the opportunity for the exhibition Benjamin Franklin and the Bulgarian Revival to be shown at the University, as well as to the organizers of the exhibition - Sts. Cyril and Methodius National Library and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristiyan Atanasov. "This exhibition illustrates how Benjamin Franklin was quoted, translated, perceived and discussed during the Bulgarian National Revival, as well as how the Bulgarian intellectuals worked for the nation-building through education even before the national independence was achieved", emphasized Ms. Fox and pointed out some of Benjamin Franklin's ideas that were very widespread at that time, namely, that knowledge must be shared, that progress must serve the public good and that education is the path to freedom.

"Benjamin Franklin probably never heard of Bulgaria and the Bulgarians, at his time we were part of the Ottoman Empire. What is more interesting, however, is that the Bulgarians find in him an example to follow", said the curator of the exhibition Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristiyan Atanasov. "The exhibition shows that the ideas have no borders, and the spiritual influence turns out to be stronger than the geographical and political divisions. The Bulgarian Revivalists recognized Benjamin Franklin as their spiritual partner – a scientist, librarian, printer, diplomat and public figure, who had turned from a loyal British citizen into an irreconcilable revolutionary and one of the fathers of the American nation. In his image, they see the example of an active citizen taking responsibility for both himself and the community. It is no coincidence that his biography, as well as Poor Richard's Almanac, find a wide response in the Bulgarian literary environment."

Assoc. Prof. Atanasov outlined that Stefan Bobchev was only 21 years old when he translated from French the book The Life of Franklin published in Constantinople in 1874. “This exhibition also has a contemporary essence. In a time of rapid change and uncertainty, Franklin's ideas about the honest work, education and social responsibility sound surprisingly relevant. They remind us that the path to progress invariably passes through knowledge and culture", added the curator.

It gives me confidence that the future is in safe hands", said Petya Gospodinova, Chairperson of the Board of the Bulgarian Book Association. "Every year, traditionally, many of our colleagues - publishers participate and they are extremely happy to be part of this event. Be sure to visit all the initiatives prepared by the organizers, because there is a lot to learn from them."

11 publishers participate in the University Book Week and present a wide variety of new titles in different genres - from fiction and journalism to specialized scientific publications and books for personal development. Visitors will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the latest book proposals, discover new authors and meet confirmed names from the literary scene.

Among the participants in the rich programme of the University Book Week there are our lecturers - Prof. D.Sc. Pencho Penchev, Department of Political Economy, Chief Assist. Dr. Victor Ivanov, Law Faculty, Chief Assist. Dr. Iliya Valkov, Media and Public Communications Department, Chief Assist. Dr. Iva Raycheva, Statistics and Econometrics Department, as well as the PhD student Ilian Boychev with his book Mission Startup. From an Idea to a Successful Business. The Generation Z Handbook.

Among the special guests will be the journalist Yuliyana Doncheva who will present her novel The Road which served as the basis for the BNT series Kom-Emine, as well as Zahary Karabashliev with his latest novel The Last Dolphin Hunter. The program will include Aleona de Cama - author of the bestseller I Choose You, LOVE, Chef Ivan Manchev, the psychotherapist Ivo Velichkov with his book Wolf Wine.

The Rector outlined the efforts of Dr. Gergana Kirilova, Director of the Rector's Office Directorate and Desislava Paunska, Head of the Public Relations and Marketing Division for the organization of the event, for the rich programme of book premieres by both university lecturers and confirmed authors of different genres.

The UNWE Management Department and DSK Bank Organized a Workshop for Entrepreneurs

The Aurora Hall at our university became a meeting point between the academic knowledge and the real business world during a specialized workshop for future entrepreneurs, organized by the Management Department in strategic partnership with DSK Bank.

The event brought together ambitious students from various specialities, who received practical guidance on developing their innovative ideas and transforming them into sustainable startup companies. The young entrepreneurs also learned about the support opportunities available within the university’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The opening ceremony was attended by Stanislava Stefanova, Head of Youth Segment Division at DSK Bank, Vasil Gospodinov, Regional Manager for Sofia Region at DSK Bank, Prof. Dr. Tsvetana Stoyanova, Vice Rector for Institutional and Business Cooperation and Student Policies, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Angel Marchev, lecturer in the Management Department /in the picture below from the left to the right/.

The discussion was focused on tools for the growth of startups and the launch of the new edition of the prestigious competition Best Youth Startup 2026.

Assoc. Prof. Angel Marchev introduced the young entrepreneurs to the activities of the UNWE Startup Incubator, which provides for students mentoring, contacts with investors and access to technical infrastructure. He emphasized on the incubator’s role as a bridge between the academic ideas and the real business, highlighting the success of various projects, such as the ParkX mobile app - an example of a successful startup.

During the event Assoc. Prof. Marchev announced the launch of the campaign for the competition Best Youth Startup 2026 encouraging attendees to submit their concepts by 8 April 2026.

Maria-Magdalena Mitovska from DSK Bank shared valuable practical insights on how to launch a new business, emphasizing the effective use of modern digital solutions. She explained in details the digital onboarding process, which allows the startups to overcome the administrative barriers and to launch their activity as quickly as possible. She also highlighted the criteria the large corporations use to select innovative startups for long-term collaboration.

Anton Hristov, invited as a guest speaker by DSK Bank, presented the entrepreneur’s journey from the start to the finish - from the inception of an idea to the development of a viable and sustainable business model. He explained the key role of the banking sector as a strategic partner, supporting the growth of young companies through specialized financial instruments and expert support. At the end of his presentation, he emphasized the importance of proper preparation for attracting investment and managing financial risk in the initial phase of projects.

The Winners in the Strategic Case Competition Organized by Lufthansa Technik Sofia and Our University Received Awards

Students from various specialities took part in the Strategic Case Competition, organized by Lufthansa Technik Sofia /LTSF/ and the UNWE, and four teams reached the finals.

The final stage of the Competition was attended by Prof. Dr. Tsvetana Stoyanova, Vice Rector for Institutional and Business Cooperation and Student Policies, Atanas Dimitrov, Director of the Inter-University Center for Career Development /ICCD/, Lilia Velinova, Employer Branding Expert at Lufthansa and the Competition’s main organizer, and the company’s mentors - Anna Bogdanova, Tsvetelina Avramova and Yohana Toleva, Managers at Lufthansa.

Lilia Velinova outlined that it is the first competition the company has organized in collaboration with the UNWE, and due to the successful mentoring session four teams have reached the final stage.

The teams worked on a real-life case study from Lufthansa Technik Sofia which the company’s management had assigned to a working group on internal strategies and operations to resolve. The same case study was given to the students.

“Your task is to evaluate the company - market share and financial condition and to provide recommendations how to increase the production and improve the financial results, as well as to elaborate a clear action plan. There is no single correct answer. The objective is to work out a structured presentation supported by data”, explained the mentors.

The four teams worked out presentations in which they gave their proposals for improving the company’s operational efficiency and achieving better financial results. After the presentation and defense of the developed concepts and solutions to the case, the winners in the first edition of the LTSF Strategic Case were announced.

First place was won by the team V&P, consisting of Victoria Zhekova and Petya Georgieva, fourth-year students of speciality International Relations. In addition to a certificate, a cash prize of 770 euros, and branded merchandise, they also won a mentoring week, during which they will have the opportunity to “step into the shoes” of the managers at Lufthansa Technik Sofia and get closer look at the company’s processes.

The second place won the team Skylogic, consisting of the first-year of specialty Business Administration Nikola Stoychev and Petar Parvanov. The prize consists of a certificate, a one-year subscription to Storytel and branded merchandise.

The third place occupied the team Committee No. 1, consisting of Raya Nikolova, Beloslava Nikolaeva, and Ivaylo Lilov, third-year students of speciality Strategic Planning, who received a certificate and branded company merchandise.

The fourth place won the team Committee No. 2 - Victoria Stateva, Martin Kontozov, Lilia Futekova, and Victoria Ivanova, students of speciality Strategic Planning.

“You are all winners. The presentations were exceptionally profound, demonstrating not only a strong financial background but also excellent management skills. You all did a fantastic job!”, said the Director of ICCD Atanas Dimitrov.

“For us, this event was much more than a competition - it was a meeting of ideas, energy and inspiration. Students of Speciality International Economic Relations Visited the European Parliament

At the invitation of Dr. Andrey Kovachev, Member of European Parliament, lecturers and students from the International Economic Relations and Business Department, led by Assist. Dr. Stoyan Neychev, went to educational visit to the European Parliament in Brussels, Kingdom of Belgium /March 16–18, 2026/. The initiative was part of the Department’s efforts to expand students’ practical knowledge and to strengthen the relation between the academic education and the real decision-making processes in the European Union.

During their visit the participants had the opportunity to gain a firsthand understanding of the structure and functioning of the European Parliament, its role within the EU’s institutional framework, and the key mechanisms for shaping policies and legislative decisions. The main stages of the legislative process were presented along with the interaction between the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of the EU as well as the current challenges facing the institution in the context of the dynamic international and economic environment.

The discussion on internship opportunities and professional development for UNWE students within the European institutions generated particular interest. Specific programmes and initiatives were examined that provide for the young people the chance to obtain practical experience and actively participate in the work of the European Parliament.

As part of the programme the group also visited the Parlamentarium — the European Parliament’s interactive visitors center providing a modern, multimedia perspective on the history of European integration, the role of the institutions, and the importance of civic participation in decision-making processes, which contributed to an even deeper understanding of the European policies and their impact on the member states.

The visit to Brussels was a valuable opportunity for the students to bridge the gap between the theoretical knowledge and the real-world practice, to familiarize themselves with the work of one of the European Union’s most important institutions and to broaden their professional and academic perspectives in an international context.

AI Hackathon Brought Together Young Talents in the Field of Artificial Intelligence

Twenty-two teams of pupils and students took part in the AI Hackathon on the AI Architect: Transform Business with AI Agents which began on 20 March 2026 in Aurora Hall at the UNWE. Participants have the opportunity to test their skills on practical case studies developing their expertise in artificial intelligence in a real-world environment.

The Hackathon is organized as part of the SeedFund project No. 2023-1-FR01 -KA220-HED-000156662 Empowering Entrepreneurs through SME Financing Education, funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, headed on behalf of UNWE by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov, Vice Rector for International Affairs. The event is held with the support of A-GORA, the Ministry of Innovation and Growth, DSK Bank — a strategic partner— and DMS Consult.

The event provoked significant interest — 80 participants from various universities and vocational high schools in Bulgaria applied to take part, motivated to develop practical skills in the field of artificial intelligence.

Highlights from the Hackathon First Day

In his opening speech Assoc. Prof. Yanko Hristozov emphasized on the University’s leading position in higher education. “The UNWE is No. 1 in Bulgaria for several reasons. This year we have a record number of 8 000 applicants. Currently we are one of the largest universities with nearly 20 000 enrolled students. In terms of digitalization, we are leaders providing over 20 digital services. Last but not least, because of our alumni, including over 150 Ministers and 12 prime Ministers. The UNWE is No. 1 also because we always manage to provoke such a great interest among our students and we are grateful that you are here today.”

The Vice Rector also highlighted one of the key challenges facing the higher education. “We owe you an explanation because we fall behind in integrating the artificial intelligence into higher education, curricula and teaching. As a professional in finance, I can share that a significant number of books on the topic of AI in finance have already been published worldwide. Allow me to give you an example. We all use AI in our daily lives; imagine what a financier could do with it. They could optimize accounting processes by using chatbots, and in the next stage, incorporate automation into the process, which will significantly simplify procedures; at an even higher level, AI agents can be integrated, thereby eliminating manual processes entirely and reducing the potential for errors.” He also pointed out the necessity of balanced approach to students’ use of AI, so that the technology is applied ethically and effectively in compliance with the academic standards. “The idea is to find the right balance so that we can all actively use it to generate ideas and verify data, but without breaking the copyright.”

Atanas Dimitrov, Director of the Inter-University Center for Career Development and co-organizer of the event, noted: “The Artificial Intelligence is not a threat — it is an opportunity. It is a threat only to those who do not use it. The Inter-University Center is a hub that brings different people together. Whether you win this hackathon or not is not the most important thing. What matters more is that you will build contacts that you can build upon in the future. The number of participants today is the consecutive evidence that the UNWE itself has provoked a great interest among the young people.”

Maya Angelova, Managing Director of Market, Secure Payment Solutions at DSK Bank and UNWE graduate, also emphasized on the great importance of AI. “AI isn’t a news, it’s just more relevant now. AI automation has been around for many years. It is now more widely accessible and you have the opportunity to work entirely independently in this area. We expect to see a fresh perspective on interpreting processes and innovative ideas for their optimization in the tasks we have prepared for you to solve.” She added that DSK Bank is the largest bank in Bulgaria in terms of both the number of customers and last year’s profits, and that its success is related both to its partnership with the UNWE and to the youth programmes they jointly support.

Todor Yankulov, founder of A-GORA — a web platform that facilitates the interaction between the young people seeking to launch their careers and the business community, and on which the contestants registered — highlighted the key role of skills. “AI is an amplifier — it develops your strengths but also highlights your weaknesses. That’s why the future belongs to those who know how to combine technology with their own knowledge and practical skills.”

The final event will take place on 23 March 2026 when the teams will present their projects to a jury of experts, who will evaluate their performance. The total prize fund for the hackathon is €2 000: the team that occupies the first place will receive €900, the second place €600, and third place €300; there is also a special incentive prize of €200. Participants will also receive branded gifts from DSK Bank.

The National Forum on Climate, Energy and Transport Poverty Brought Together Scientists, Representatives of Institutions, Business Community, Media and Civil Sector

The UNWE, the Climate, Atmosphere and Water Research Institute and the Institute for Economic Research /IER/ at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences /BAS/ organized a scientific and public forum on the Climate Change and Its Impact on Vulnerable Population Groups which was held at the UNWE.

The Forum brought together scientists, representatives from institutions, the business community, the media and the civil sector. Students were also invited to present their video projects in relation to the celebration of the World Glacier Day, World Water Day and the World Meteorological Day.

The Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov officially opened the event, emphasizing that this forum brings together diverse individuals from various institutions with different professional interests, and that its objective for them is to complement and assist one another in generating ideas that benefit society. Ideas that policymakers can draw upon. He addressed to the students wishing them success and encouraging them to “kindle the fire of knowledge within themselves”.

“It is no coincidence that this forum is held on the World Glacier Day, Water Day and Meteorology Day. At previous celebrations we were together again and organized exhibitions and competitions but this year we decided to invite students to a video contest, and today we will see their works”, said Corr.-Member Prof. D.Sc. Ekaterina Bachvarova, Director of the Climate, Atmosphere and Water Research Institute /CAWRI-BAS/. She emphasized that the cooperation with the UNWE is extremely important for the CAWRI-BAS, and a joint, highly successful Master’s programme was established as a result of the memorandum signed three years ago.

The Vice Rector for Institutional and Business Cooperation and Student Policies Prof. Dr. Tsvetana Stoyanova proposed expanding the joint initiative by signing a new memorandum. “Following the success of the Master’s programme and the successful work on the ACTETS2 project - Energy and Transport Poverty in the Context of ETS2r - we believe that together we can work productively in various areas. This will benefit both our students and scientific research, as well as the society.”

Corr.-Member Prof. D.Sc. Ekaterina Bachvarova and Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov signed a new memorandum of cooperation aimed at developing educational activities and joint scientific research in the field of climate change and sustainable development.

Prof. Dr. Hristina Nikolova, Head of the Economics of Transport and Energy Department, greeted them and expressed the view that the cooperation with the Climate, Atmosphere and Water Research Institute and the Institute for Economic Research has always been fruitful as they share common themes and interests. “The future lies in cooperation. We have so many points of contact and we see that our joint work gives very good results. Today’s memorandum reaffirms once again our intentions for fruitful work and will reinforce our successes in the fields of science and education”, said Prof. Dr. Hristina Nikolova. She explained that the main objective of the forum is to create a platform for dialogue between the science, the institutions and the society as well as to encourage the development of solutions for sustainable development and better protection of vulnerable population groups.

After the official opening a session entitled Meeting of Generations: Science, Media, Business and Art for Nature was held, moderated by Assist. Tanya Sarafsky /CAWRI-BAS/ and attended by representatives from various sectors of society, journalists and artists. Pupils from Acad. Lyubomir Chakalov National High School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, No. 170 Vasil Levsky Secondary School in Novi Iskar, and the Balchik Maritime Club presented their exceptionally interesting video materials on the Glaciers, Water and Meteorology. The presentations and videos provoked a lively discussion regarding the climate changes - which no one disputes anymore — and their future consequences.

The next panel presented the project Analysis and Assessment of the Impact of Climate Hazards and the Expanded Emissions Trading Scheme in Buildings and Transport /ETS2/ on Vulnerable, Energy-Poor and Transport-Poor Population Groups in Bulgaria /ACTETS2/.” The project is being implemented by the Climate, Atmosphere, and Water Research Institute at BAS in partnership with the UNWE and the Institute for Economic Research at BAS. The Head of the research team is Corr.-Member Prof. D.Sc. Ekaterina Bachvarova and the UNWE is represented by Prof. Dr. Hristina Nikolova (researcher and Project Head) and Eng. Marta Klisurova /Ph.D. candidate/ - both from the Economics of Transport and Energy Department.

The presentations analyzed the impact of climate risks on energy and transport poverty in the context of the expanded European Emissions Trading Scheme /ETS2/. Scholars, business representatives and civil society organizations spoke on the topic, provoking an expert discussion on the impact of climate risks on energy, transport and water poverty.

“The main objective of the project is to generate new interdisciplinary and socially oriented scientific knowledge for Bulgaria regarding the impact of climate change and the Emissions Trading System /ETS2/ on vulnerable social groups and households experiencing energy and transport poverty”, said Eng. Marta Klisurova /Ph.D. candidate/, while Prof. Dr. Hristina Nikolova summarized that the project’s results would serve as a scientific basis for more equitable and sustainable policies for energy- and transport-poor population groups by incorporating climate hazards into national impact assessments.

The Winners in the Joint Business Academy organized by the UNWE and Coca-Cola HBC Received Their Awards

The third joint Business Academy, organized by the UNWE and Coca-Cola HBC was closed with an official awards ceremony for the students who achieved the best results in the three key modules - Business Intelligence, Master Data and Finance. The Academy provided the students with the opportunity to acquire practical skills and knowledge in business data analysis, database management and financial processes. Thus the Academy establishing itself as a significant platform for professional development and the promotion of entrepreneurial thinking.

The event was attended by Prof. Dr. Tsvetana Stoyanova, Vice Rector for Institutional and Business Cooperation and Student Policies, Atanas Dimitrov, Director of the Inter-University Center for Career Development (ICCD), and Angelina Ivanova, representative of the competition’s sponsor - Coca-Cola HBC.

Prof. Dr. Tsvetana Stoyanova greeted the participants who took part in the Academy: “With great pleasure we mark the conclusion of the UNWE and Coca-Cola HBC Business Academy, which brought together the most motivated students and gave them the opportunity to engage with the real business world, acquire valuable knowledge and develop practical skills. Angelina Ivanova shared that this year over 100 candidates participated in the three key modules, 94 students reached the final stages, of which 26 excelled with high quality. “For us, the most important thing is that we were able to share our knowledge and experience, to show you real-life business operations, meanwhile creating opportunities for future professional development. Thank you for your active participation and enthusiasm!”, said in conclusion Mrs. Ivanova.

Atanas Dimitrov expressed his contentment with the Academy and greeted the participants on their efforts, emphasizing that the team’s hard work, preparation and dedication are entirely focused on the development of the students participating in the various modules: “We see your success and growth and that is our greatest reward”. He added that everything makes sense when it contributes to the students’ knowledge, experience and professional growth.

The Director of the Institute for Enhancing the Research Capacity in the Field of the Nuclear Industry and Nuclear Security at UNWE Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Bulgaria H.E. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet held a working meeting dedicated to the bilateral cooperation development.

The meeting was organized at the invitation of H.E. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet and opportunities for cooperation in the fields of the nuclear industry, nuclear security and human resource development in the nuclear energy were discussed. The prospects for the exchange of experts and the organization of specialized training courses for Vietnamese specialists at UNWE, in its capacity as a partner center of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), were also examined.

The parties also discussed the possibility of preparation and participation in joint projects under various European programmes as well as the participation of Vietnamese students in the Master’s programme in Economics of Defense and Security with specialization in Nuclear Security at the UNWE.

H. E. Nathaniel Copsey, the United Kingdom`s Ambassador to Bulgaria, Delivered a Public Lecture at Our University

H. E. Nathaniel Copsey, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Bulgaria, delivered public lecture to students at our university. The event was organized by the International Relations Research Student Association /IRRSA/ at UNWE.

The topics covered in the public lecture were focused on the relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union, their significance in these dynamic times, and the stability of the continent. At the end of the lecture, Ambassador Copsey spoke in more details about the UK’s economy and the areas in which it invests.

Ivan Nankov, Chairman of RRSA, introduced the guest lecturer, told more about him, and noted: “I believe that such events are important for young people and that`s why we organize them”.

“It is a pleasure for me to be here with young people who are interested in such topics”, said H. E. Nathaniel Copsey. “Since 2016, when the United Kingdom left the EU, our relations have gone through various stages. The partnership between the two countries is important for us, for the continent, but also for the world”, added the Ambassador.

The public lecture was held in the spirit of realism and the call for strategic unity. The main message was that the debate on “the right and wrong” regarding Brexit had already gone in the past — the focus must be on the collective survival and prosperity in a radically changed world. H. E. Nathaniel Copsey emphasized on the historical gravity of the present moment. He noted that for the first time since the World War II, we see a direct aggression by a major power against its neighbor. “With the war in Ukraine came the cyberattacks, and a tsunami of disinformation has “flooded” all Europeans. This event, combined with the escalation in the Middle East, creates a perfect storm of challenges that no single country can solve on its own”, said the guest lecturer.

That is why, according to the Ambassador, the cooperation is important. It will help Ukraine, put an end to the hybrid war, and stop the drug and human trafficking. It will strengthen the economies of both countries and make their infrastructure secure and sustainable.

H. E. Nathaniel Copsey also commented on the migration issue on the continent. “Bulgaria is at this crossroads. The country is perhaps the busiest route for migrants going to Europe”, said the Anbassador and added that the United Kingdom and the Bulgarian authorities work together to solve the problem and achieve excellent results.

UNWE Hosted the National Final Round of the European Money Quiz

The UNWE hosted the national final round of the European Money Quiz - the most comprehensive financial literacy event in Europe. Our country participated in the competition for the second consecutive year at the initiative of the Association of Banks in Bulgaria /ABB/ and the Association of Economic Schools in Bulgaria /AESB/.

The European Money Quiz is the largest of its kind in the field of financial literacy with the participation of pupils from over 30 countries. The initiative aims to improve the financial literacy among pupils aged 13–15 and it is organized under the auspices of the European Banking Federation. It takes place during the European Money Week which is traditionally held in March.

Prof. Dr. Daniela Feschian, Chairwoman of the Association of Economic Schools in Bulgaria /AESB/, highlighted the growing interest in the joint initiative of the ABB and the AESB: “Dear competitors, I would like to greet you on your tremendous success. Today, the winners from 21 schools - more than 300 pupils - will take part in the first round of the competition. It proves your exceptional motivation, high level of preparation and thirst for new knowledge in the field of economics. Admirations to all the teachers who are here with you today and support you on your path to knowledge. Thank you, colleagues, for your care for Bulgaria’s young talents! Thank you to the school principals for your support of our initiative. You are already winners, and I wish you success in the national round of the European Money Quiz as well. I am pleased that the strategic partnership between the Association of Industrial Banks of Bulgaria (AIBB) and the Association of Banks in Bulgaria /ABB/ gives real results, namely in discovering young talents in the country’s economic education sector and giving them the opportunity to show their knowledge and skills at European level. Bulgaria has become a permanent part of one of the largest financial literacy initiatives in Europe. Following the pilot programme in 2025, which involved five high schools, 17 new schools joined this year, clearly showing the growing interest in the competition and in the topic of financial literacy among young people. “We are convinced that developing basic financial knowledge and skills at school is key to shaping responsible and informed citizens who can make reasonable financial decisions in their personal and professional lives”, said Dr. James Yolovsky, Secretary General of the ABB, during the opening of the national round of the competition.

Twenty-one winners from 21 schools across the country took part in the national final round of the competition. They took online tests on financial literacy, money and financial management and inflation.

After an extremely fierce competition, the winner was Stanimir Stanchev, 8th-grade pupil at the G. S. Rakovsky Technical High School in Varna, member school of the Association of Economic Schools in Bulgaria /in the picture below/. When asked by Prof. Daniela Feschiyan to introduce himself, Stanimir shared that he loves accounting and dreams of becoming a student of speciality Accounting at the UNWE.

The second place won Velin Gyurov, 9th-grade pupil at the National Trade and Banking High School in Sofia, who is interested in finance and banking.

Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov Organized a Visit for Students from the University’s Master’s Programme in Nuclear Security to the Nuclear Regulatory Agency

Students from the Master’s programme in Economics of Defense and Security with specialization Nuclear Security at the UNWE visited the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency /BNRA/. The visit was organized by the Head of the Master`s programme Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the Center for Nuclear Security Support, as part of the coursework on the security of nuclear and other radioactive materials during transport.

The guests were welcomed by Mr. Atanas Dobrev, Director of the International Cooperation Directorate at the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency /BNRA/, who greeted the students and university lecturers and briefly outlined the agency’s activities. In his remarks, he highlighted UNWE’s potential in the field of nuclear security and praised the university for its international recognition through its designation as a partner center of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). With this status, the UNWE ranks among the few academic institutions in the world that have received such recognition in fact, the UNWE is the fourth such center in Europe and the twelfth globally.

The Head of the Master’s programme Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov expressed thankfulness to Atanas Dobrev and the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency Tsanko Bachiysky, for their hospitality. He outlined the active cooperation between the UNWE and the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, including the university’s participation in the implementation of the Three-Year Action Plan under the National Strategy for Human Resources Development in the Nuclear Sector for the period 2026–2028. Prof. Spasov emphasized that the Master’s programme continues to develop and prepare highly qualified specialists, with many of its graduates subsequently finding professional fulfillment in institutions and organizations working in the field of nuclear security in their respective countries, while some of them also begin careers at the International Atomic Energy Agency.

During the visit Dr. Ivaylo Ivanov, who teaches the course Methods and Instruments for Measuring Nuclear and Other Radioactive Materials in the Master’s programme in Nuclear Security, held a presentation in which he informed the students about the main functions, powers and activities of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency. Then Lyudmila Simeonova, Head of the Emergency Planning and Preparedness Division within the Nuclear Safety Directorate General at the BNRA, together with experts from the Division explained to the students the Agency’s specialized operational and technical sector, including the surveillance, information and computer systems used to control and monitor nuclear safety and security.

The visit gave the students the opportunity to get a closer look at the practical aspects of nuclear regulation and to acquire a clearer understanding of the role of the national regulatory authority in the system for ensuring nuclear safety and security.

Memorandum of Cooperation with Hewlett Packard Enterprise

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and Todor Zhekov, Managing Director of Hewlett Packard Global Delivery Bulgaria Center Ltd. /HPE/, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation that strengthens the partnership between the two institutions.

The agreement provides for the implementation of various joint initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education, advancing scientific research and training highly qualified specialists. Plans include providing opportunities for students to participate in internship programmes, conducting practical training and research, inviting company experts as guest lecturers and organizing masterclasses and workshops.

Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov noted that the University not only educates students but also creates conditions that encourage the young people to find their path to professional development. He highlighted the various forms of partnership with the business sector, which allow the academic knowledge to be complemented with practical experience. The Rector emphasized on the work on the digitization of business processes using large databases and outlined the activities of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Economics. He also presented various ongoing projects noting the significant interest among young people in the speciality Cybersecurity in Business and speciality Cryptoeconomics.

Todor Zhekov outlined that the signing of the Memorandum opens up many new opportunities for collaboration on various projects; students will be able to visit the company’s office, where they will tour its operational data center and learn about its actual business processes and various stages of work.

Assoc. Prof. Maria Vodenicharova noted that the students had already had the opportunity to obtain valuable knowledge and learn from the practical experience of the specialists at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. She said that the partnership had already begun with a public lecture by Yordan Borodzhiev for fourth-year students of speciality Business Logistics and that a visit by students to the company’s office was scheduled for later that week.

UNWE and Sofia University Will Partner in the Field of the Nuclear Industry and Security

The Memorandum establishes a framework for a strategic partnership aimed at developing and improving the quality of education, research and innovation in the fields of nuclear energy and nuclear security, as well as for preparing and implementing joint projects under the national and European programmes. It provides for cooperation in a number of strategic areas, including:

Scientific research and capacity building in areas such as clean energy, nuclear engineering and core technologies;
Application of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity in the energy sector;
Geological surveys related to the disposal of spent nuclear fuel;
Geospatial analyses, risk assessment and impact assessment on regional sustainability;
Development of models for spatial planning and assessment of environmental and regional impacts;
Research and application of Small Modular reactors /SMRs/;
Exchange of university lecturers, researchers, and students;

Alexander Petrov, Head of the Analysis and Protection Sector at Kozloduy NPP, welcomed the guests and outlined: “It is an honour for us to partner with the UNWE, and I am delighted to have you here”. He introduced to the Master’s degree students the main technical and operational characteristics of the 1 000-megawatt power units, as well as the plant’s safety and physical protection systems.

The group also visited the Training Center — a simulator and an authentic copy of the protective shield of Reactor No. 6, where they had the opportunity to observe a real-time simulation of process control, learn about the emergency response protocols, and see up close the physical protection systems of the containment area. The guests also attended a simulation of an emergency shutdown.

The visit is a result of the established relationship between the two institutions, following the memorandum of strategic partnership signed between the UNWE and Kozloduy NPP EAD in 2024 which lays the foundation for active cooperation in training personnel in nuclear security, organizing student internships, and implementing joint research projects in the energy sector.

The memory of the Bulgarian Apostle of Freedom Vasil Levsky was honoured in Tsaribrod on the 153rd anniversary of his hanging with a commemorative ceremony and the laying of wreaths and flowers in front of his monument in the center of the city.

For consecutive year, a delegation from the UNWE attended the ceremony in memory of Vasil Levsky, organized by the municipality of Tsaribrod. The delegation included Eng. Yulian Prilepsky, Acting Assistant Rector, Dr. Gergana Kirilova, Director of Rector's Office Directorate, and Desislava Paunska, Head of the Public Relations and Marketing Division.

In a letter to the Mayor of Tsaribrod, the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov expressed his personal and the academic leadership's sincere gratitude for the invitation to the University to participate in the commemorative ceremony marking of the 153rd Anniversary of Vasil Levsky's death, he also expresses his appreciation to the organizers and attendees, who, through their participation, demonstrate that the Apostle's work continues to live on.

Today, we pay tribute to the bright memory of the Apostle of Freedom, whose sacrifice became an eternal moral compass for the Bulgarian people. He didn't just leave us with a dream of political freedom. He bequeathed us an ideal for a pure and holy republic - a state of citizens equal before the law, of morality, dignity and responsibility. In his words and deeds, we find not only a revolutionary determination, but also an exceptional vision for a society based on knowledge, education and conscious civic participation", says Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov in his letter to the Mayor. He emphasizes: “We live in a dynamic and challenging world in which we, as an academic community, have a special responsibility – to educate young people in a spirit of patriotism, integrity and social engagement, to build personalities who do not simply seek personal success but work for the common good. Two Ministers in the Interim Government Headed by Andrey Gyurov Are Graduates of Our University

The interim government headed by Andrey Gyurov and appointed by Decree of the President Iliana Yotova includes two ministers who are graduates of the University of National and World Economy.

Traycho Traykov is appointed as interim Minister of Energy.

He has graduated from the UNWE, speciality International Economic Relations and then specialized in financial analysis and management in Austria and Germany.

His political career at the national level began in 2009 when he was appointed as Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism in Boyko Borisov's first government. After the end of Borisov's first cabinet, he joined the Civil Council of the Reformist Bloc, and in 2016 he was the Reformist Bloc's candidate for President. In 2019, he was elected as Mayor of the Sredets District in the Sofia Municipality, and in 2023 he was re-elected for a second term.

Ivan Hristanov is appointed as interim Minister of Agriculture and Food.

He holds a Master's degree in Economics, speciality Agricultural Economics and has also second speciality Accounting and Control.

Before entering the politics, Ivan Hristanov has a career in the private sector as co-founder of one of Bulgaria's largest consumer finance companies, which was later sold to an international group.

After being elected as a Member of Parliament for the Pleven region, he focused on the public service. He was Deputy Minister of Agriculture in Kiril Petkov's government /2021–2022/.

UNWE Students Visited the National Assembly and Watched Voting in the Plenary Hall

Students visited the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria and got acquainted with the work of the legislature, the process of drafting and adopting laws, as well as the role of parliamentary committees.

The visit was at the invitation of Mr. Ivan Klisursky – Member of Parliament and member of the Committee on Economic Policy and Innovation, the Committee on Control over the Security Services and the Use of Special Surveillance Devices, the Subcommittee on Support for the Process of Bulgaria's Accession to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development /OECD/ and the Standing Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Restriction of Monopolies.

The culmination of the visit for the students was their presence in the Plenary Hall during a real vote on a law draft – valuable practical experience that allowed the students to closely observe the democratic process in action.

The students were greeted by the President of the LI National Assembly Mrs. Raya Nazaryan – a graduate of the UNWE Law Faculty.

During the organized meeting, actual topics were discussed, including the introduction of the euro, Bulgaria's progress in joining the OECD and consumer protection policies. The meeting turned into an open dialogue on current economic issues and emphasized the importance of the link between the academic education and practices in the public sector. Students – future economists and lawyers, were encouraged to develop their professional potential and to maintain an active interest in the work of state institutions.

Philip Lane, Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank, Visited Our University

Philip Lane, member of the Executive Board and Chief Economist of the European Central Bank /ECB/, was a guest at the UNWE. During his visit, he met with the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov. The meeting was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov, Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Ilia Lingorsky and Lyubomir Karimansky, members of the Governing Council of the Bulgarian National Bank.

During the conversation, they discussed the role of universities in Bulgaria's accession to the Eurozone, the preparation of highly qualified professionals for the banking and public sectors as well as the opportunities for cooperation with the ECB and the European institutions.

Philip Lane emphasized on the importance of academic partnerships and career opportunities for young people: "I always visit the best universities and I have heard that the UNWE is one of them". He pointed out that the ECB hires between 500 and 600 interns annually for one-year positions immediately after they complete their higher education - an opportunity that is extremely valuable for the professional development of the young specialist. Lane also added that the opportunities for career development provided by the ECB are not limited to economics, but also expand to computer science, law - especially in the context of the development of the digital euro and translational work.

Regarding the joining the euro area, Philip Lane outlined that the curricula should be adapted - with less focus on currency boards and more in-depth study of the functioning of the Monetary Union. He also highlighted the importance of digitization in the public sector as well as the Schuman Programme which promotes the exchange of researchers between the Central Banks.

Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov presented the active role of UNWE in the process of European integration: "The UNWE is actively involved in the communication campaign for the adoption of the euro through conferences and a number of initiatives. Most bankers in Bulgaria are graduates of our university and support this process". He also proposed cooperation in the preparation of journalists and media specialists so that they can deepen their knowledge of monetary policy and the activities of the ECB. The Rector noted that about 20% of UNWE students go into finance and banking, but the University also prepares specialists in public administration, international relations, and law. According to the official data, 58% of graduates over the past five years have found employment in their field of study. Prof. Dimitrov also highlighted the UNWE's participation in the European alliance ENGAGE.EU which aims to enable the students to obtain a joint diploma from ten universities in the consortium in the future.

Lyubomir Karimansky emphasized on the importance of the financial literacy: "We need to improve the financial literacy not only in Bulgaria but also in the Balkan region. The UNWE has a key role to play in implementing the national strategy in this direction". He added that the innovation, productivity and reforms in the energy and public sectors are essential for sustainable development with trust remaining the foundation of both the banking system and the public sector.

Iliya Lingorsky outlined the importance of transparent communication in the process of transition to the euro: "Curiosity and timely, transparent information are the best way to alleviate fears and tensions in society". According to him, the Bulgarian talents hold prestigious positions in international institutions - over 100 Bulgarians work at the ECB while others are part of Harvard Business School and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He gave the example of Anton Antonov, Chief Economist at the ECB, who developed a new model for inflation.

Assoc. Prof. Yanko Hristozov presented the international activities of UNWE and the opportunities for mobility. "The University has over 250 partnerships with European and global universities under the Erasmus+ Programme. This year we set a record – 120 of our students participate in mobility programmes which shows the growing interest in the international exchange".

During his visit, Philip Lane also met with first-year students of speciality Finance and speciality Accounting. The event provoked great interest and provided a valuable opportunity for direct dialogue between the future economists and one of the leading representatives of the European Central Bank.

The guest was introduced by Assoc. Prof. Yanko Hristozov, who presented Philip Lane's professional and academic career as Chief Economist and Member of the Executive Board of the ECB. Assoc. Prof. Hristozov emphasized the importance of European institutions for the economic stability and development of member states as well as the role of UNWE as part of the active European academic dialogue. He encouraged the students to take advantage of the international opportunities provided by the University and to seek professional realization in European institutions.

In his presentation to students, Philip Lane spoke about the ECB's role in maintaining the price stability, the challenges facing monetary policy in the context of global economic turmoil, and the future of the euro area. He paid special attention to the development of the digital euro and the importance of well-trained young professionals in the fields of finance, economics, law and information technology. Lane encouraged students to think in a European context and to be active participants in the processes of economic integration.

At the end of the lecture there was a lively and substantive discussion with the students who asked questions on key topics on the economic and geopolitical agenda.

Among the highlights were the effects of Bulgaria's accession to the Eurozone and the possible impact on inflation and incomes, Europe's position and competitive advantages vis-à-vis the US and China, as well as its future geopolitical orientation. The students also showed interest in the digital euro project, its potential impact on the crypto sector and the use of artificial intelligence in the European Central Bank's activities.

The discussion showed the high level of engagement of the first-year students and their deep interest in the development of the European economy and financial policies.

Philip Lane's visit to the UNWE confirmed the University's importance as a leading academic institution in the field of economics, finance and public policy, and as an active partner in the European dialogue on the future of the Eurozone and Bulgaria's economic development.

The Rector met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and Dr. Haider Alburiahi, Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of Iraq, discussed opportunities for developing the bilateral cooperation in the fields of education and scientific research. Mr. Hussein Hadi Mishbak, Regional Advisor on Cultural Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, based in Romania, also participated in the meeting.

Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov expressed the readiness of UNWE to expand the cooperation with Iraqi universities by signing memoranda of understanding. "We are ready to sign memoranda of understanding with Iraqi universities, relying on your expertise to recommend the most suitable partners. We can do this here in Sofia, in Baghdad, or online". The Rector of UNWE noted that the University already implements a new, more effective approach to international agreements: "In the past, we signed agreements only between the Rector and the Ambassador, and nothing happened because everyone was very busy. That is why now we include specific coordinators from both sides in each memorandum to work on operational issues - how many students, when they will arrive, what subjects they will study, and how the whole process will be coordinated."

The Rector presented the opportunities for foreign students to study at the UNWE. The University provide six Bachelor's programmes in English, in which nearly 200 European students are enrolled. "We invite Iraqi students to join these programmes. We could also provide accommodation in student dormitories", said Prof. Dimitrov. He also pointed out the University's successful experience in organizing short-term summer courses for students from India and Pakistan, emphasizing that UNWE issues academic documents for the credits obtained which can be recognized by the partner universities. The guests were particularly interested in the specialized programmes /executive programmes/ for senior managers and experts. "Such programmes could be held both in person in Bulgaria and online", explained the Rector. He highlighted the opportunities for cooperation under the Erasmus+ Programme, including in the areas of mobility and capacity building as well as under the Horizon Europe Programme.

He highlighted as a strategic advantage the participation of UNWE in the ENGAGE.EU alliance – a network of 10 leading European business universities. "I am currently the Chairman of this consortium and we will take advantage of this position to expand the international partnerships", pointed out Prof. Dimitrov.

During the meeting, the possibility of applying a franchise model of education in Iraq was also discussed, following the example of partnerships already implemented in other countries. "We could provide our curricula and the training could take place on site in Iraq. This solves the problem of visas and a number of administrative and logistical issues,", said the Rector. He also proposed an innovative opportunity - training students in Iraq in Arabic by local lecturers who would be consulted and methodologically supported by teams from the UNWE.

Dr. Haider Alburiahi outlined the importance of the meeting as a first step toward a long-term strategic partnership. "I am ready to provide support at all times to turn these ideas into a real cooperation". He expressed confidence that his academic experience would contribute to a more effective dialogue between the institutions. He highlighted the scale of the Iraqi education system - 46 state and over 80 private universities - and extended an official invitation to the Rector of UNWE to visit Iraq to continue the talks on site. "The technology has changed the way we work. Let's maintain direct and constant contact to speed up the process", suggested Dr. Alburiahi.

The Regional Councilor for Cultural Affairs Mr. Hussein Hadi Mishbak shared his impressions of the role of UNWE in Bulgarian public and economic life: "I am impressed by the heritage and influence of the University. I understand that many Ministers and Prime Ministers have graduated here. In this sense, the UNWE is Bulgaria's Harvard".

Mr. Mishbak emphasized on the opportunities for student mobility /15-20 credits for a period of 2-3 months/, participation in the Erasmus+ Programme, development of franchise partnerships and exchange of lecturers. "There is interest from Iraqi institutions in attracting Bulgarian professors for teaching, scientific guidance and participation in examination committees and the necessary conditions will be provided", said the Regional Councilor.

At the end of the meeting the parties agreed to maintain communication and initiate follow-up online discussions at expert level in order to specify the future steps. The meeting laid the foundations for a new stage in the academic cooperation between the UNWE and the educational institutions in the Republic of Iraq with a focus on practical results, student and lecturers mobility and the development of joint educational and scientific initiatives.

Europe and the World at the UNWE: Welcome Party Brought Together Students from 20 Countries

The UNWE Campus K was filled with energy, different languages and smiles when over 80 participants

mark the start of the Erasmus+ semester in the spirit of international cooperation and academic exchange.

The Erasmus+ Welcome Party was held in the shared space at UNWE Campus K officially marking the start of the summer semester of 2025/2026 academic year for incoming Erasmus+ Programme students. The event was organized by the team of the Mobility Department at UNWE International Affairs Directorate and it was attended by students, lecturers and representatives of the university community.

The official host was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov, Vice-Rector for International Affairss. He greeted the students on behalf of the Rector of the UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and wished them a successful semester filled with fruitful academic contacts and international friendships.

During the evening, the incoming Erasmus+ programme students – Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral students who will study at the UNWE during the summer semester – were welcomed. They come from Russia, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Norway, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Morocco, Georgia and Kazakhstan, which once again highlights the international character of the academic community.

The event programme included an interactive game for getting to know the University – Get Lost in the UNWE, which gave Bulgarian and foreign students the opportunity to get to know each other in an informal and friendly atmosphere.

Volunteers from the ESN UNWE and Erasmus+ Ambassadors – UNWE students who had participated in the Erasmus+ mobility programme – were actively involved in the organization and implementation of the event, sharing their experiences and inspiring the new exchange participants.

The International Affairs Directorate continues to actively encourage the participation of students and lecturers in international programmes, works to expand the partner network and improve the quality of academic exchange. In recent years, there has been steady growth in both incoming and outgoing mobility as well as increased interest in double degree programmes and intensive international initiatives.

The Erasmus+ Welcome Party once again emphasized the UNWE commitment to the internationalization of education and the creation of dynamic, open and international academic environment.

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov Met with the Ambassador of France H. E. Marie Dumoulin

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov met with the new French Ambassador to Bulgaria H. E. Marie Dumoulin. Both institutions will work towards establishing dual Master's degree programmes between the UNWE and the French universities.

During the meeting Prof. Dimitrov highlighted the leading position of the UNWE in the Bulgarian and European educational space.

"We have very good relations with French universities, and the European alliance ENGAGE.EU helps a lot in this regard", said the Rector noting that the ENGAGE community works actively and more and more foreign students want to study and develop in Bulgaria. The Rector presented to H. E. Marie Dumoulin the history and achievements of the University, the digitization of the educational process, and the work on various international projects.

The UNWE works in partnership with French universities on more than 10 projects under the Erasmus Programme. According to Ambassador Dumoulin, it is the first step towards further activities and future cooperation: "I am glad that a week ago, when I was at the opening of the Doctoral Conference at your university, dedicated to ethical standards and working with artificial intelligence, I saw so many young people from different countries united".

She expressed thankfulness to the Rector and the UNWE for being a bridge between different cultures and talked about her meetings with French students studying in Bulgaria who are extremely contented and many of them consider staying in the country after their studies.

"France and Bulgaria collaborate in science, but we must also emphasize on the academic cooperation that generates science", pointed out Ambassador Dumoulin.

The Ambassador and the Rector committed to working towards intensifying the cooperation between the UNWE and the French universities.

Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov outlined that the internationalization is important for the University and that he would be delighted to work together with French colleagues: "The Academic Managing Body works to establish partnerships with foreign universities. These initiatives have a positive impact, enhancing the image, quality, international competitiveness and attractiveness of the European higher education".

"We are happy that Bulgaria has joined the Eurozone and is now part of the big family. Your country will become more attractive to foreign investment, including French investment", said the French Ambassador.

The meeting ended with wishes for deepening the academic exchange between Bulgaria and France and expanding the cooperation in various fields.

Dr. Boyan Mitrakiev, Lecturer at the National and Regional Security Department, Is the New Executive Director of CEIB

Dr. Boyan Mitrakiev, assistant at the UNWE National and Regional Security Department, was appointed by the Management Board of the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria /CEIB/ as Executive Director of CEIB. He will officially take up the position on March 1, 2026.

Boyan Mitrakiev has a solid academic and practical preparation as well as expertise in the field of public communications, information technology and sectors of strategic importance to the economy. He has graduated Business Administration from the City University of Seattle, holds a PhD in Public Communications and Information Systems from the New Bulgarian University and teaches at the UNWE National and Regional Security Department.

The UNWE hosted the First International Doctoral Conference of ENGAGE.EU - Building Fair AI: Combatting Algorithmic Bias for Inclusive Innovation in Europe, organized by a team of five Doctoral students from partner universities in the European alliance.

The Conference organizers from the UNWE are Adrian Dinev, Doctoral student at the UNWE Marketing and Strategic Planning Department, Tsvetanka Paunova, Doctoral student at the UNWE Private Legal Studies Department, Miroslav Mihaylov, Doctoral student at the UNWE Regional Development Department, and their colleagues the Doctoral students Nohaila el Mouden Jaadouni /ESADE/Ramon Llull University, Spain/ and Bernard Al Osta /Université Toulouse 1 Capitole, France/.

The event brought together young researchers from a number of European universities who discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on the economy, society and institutional systems. The conference was opened by the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov who is the Chairman of the Board of Rectors of the European alliance ENGAGE.EU. The special guest was H.E. Mrs. Marie Dumoulin, Ambassador of France to Bulgaria. Official guests were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Miroslav Dimitrov, Dean of the UNWE Law Faculty, Prof. Dr. Nadia Mironova, Dean of the UNWE Management and Administration Faculty, and Céline Branchi, Institutional Cooperation Attaché at the French Institute in Bulgaria. The Conference was focused on the fair and responsible application of AI technologies, the role of innovation, and building trust in digital solutions in the context of sustainable development.

The Conference initiated by Doctoral students from Bulgaria, Spain, and France, is the result of international academic cooperation between several European universities within the ENGAGE.EU alliance which aims to build a bridge between the scientific research and the practical applications through an interdisciplinary approach that brings together researchers and young professionals from fields such as law, marketing and public administration", said Victoria Petrova in her introductory address.

"This conference dedicated to the artificial intelligence, fair regulations and the AI responsible use, is an excellent example of how the European universities can work together, guided by common values. That`s why we have gathered here representatives of various national academic communities, prominent scientists and colleagues from different institutions. I am convinced that this will create an excellent foundation for future projects and joint initiatives in science and education", said the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, adding: "Our university is an ideal platform for such initiatives, including in the field of artificial intelligence. Last year we established an Institute of Artificial Intelligence in Economics so we develop Master's programmes and numerous disciplines related to the AI. We also have a large AI-based data center which allows for even greater synergy with our partners at the ENGAGE.EU." The Rector concluded by saying: "Use all channels—websites, social networks, media. Within our alliance, we constantly look for ways to have a real impact on society, because the society should know what happens and what results we achieve".

In my opinion, the topic of the impact of AI on the economy, society, institutions and their actors is extremely important. I would also add that the AI has a significant impact on legal relations and procedures, including the establishment, development and resolution of possible disputes. There`s no doubt that the AI must be used responsibly and for fair purposes", outlined the Dean of the UNWE Law Faculty Assoc. Prof. Dr. Miroslav Dimitrov.

The thematic panels on the first day covered various topics, such as the Intellectual Property and Copyright in the Context of Artificial Intelligence with the participation of Prof. D.Sc. Zhivko Draganov, Doctoral student Tsvetanka Paunova and Assist. Dr. Antitsa Geneva, the AI-Mediated Shopping and Changes in Consumer Behavior Caused by the Generative AI with the participation of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elena Kostadinova and Doctoral student Adrian Dinev. The third panel was led by Assist. Dr. Krasimir Petkov who presented the project Digital Citizenship Education – Learn, Connect, Engage, Thrive, devoted to the ethical aspects of new technologies. The fourth panel organized by Doctoral student Miroslav Mihaylov and Prof. Dr. Frederic Santamaria /Université Grenoble Alpes focused on the regional development and innovation through examples of successful practices from France.

On the second day, a discussion dedicated to the SDG 16 and the fair application of AI was held. It was led by Doctoral student Nohaila el Mouden Jaadouni with the participation of Doctoral student David Falcon, Assist. Dr. Antitsa Geneva and Doctoral student Tsvetanka Paunova, discussing the ethical and social dimensions of AI. The final panel, with the participation of representatives of AI Cluster Bulgaria, was focused on the practical aspects of implementing AI in the business and society with examples from the IT sector and medicine. As part of the Conference programme, the participants delivered short scientific presentations related to the Sustainable Development Goals SDG 9 and SDG 16.

All the participants were awarded certificates for their active participation and contribution to the discussions.

The Chairman of UNWE Board of Trustees Maxim Behar Will Leave for Space Training at the NASA Center in the USA

Maxim Behar, world-renowned PR expert, businessman, journalist, diplomat and Chairman of the UNWE Board of Trustees, next week will travel with his wife to the USA where they will take part in an intensive training course at the NASA US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

The project is implemented as part of Hello, Space! Programme of the Atlantic Club in Bulgaria and it is supported by Maxim Behar's friends, partners and colleagues as a special collective gift on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

The NASA programme is held once a year and it is limited to 16 people from around the world, selected after individual interviews and tests. The ten-day training cycle includes flight simulation /working in conditions identical to those on a spacecraft/, spacewalking /specialized exercises outside the simulator/ and weightlessness /training for orientation and movement in a zero-gravity environment/.

After his return Maxim Behar will hold a special press conference to provide detailed information about the programme and training sessions.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, is known as "the largest space museum on Earth." Founded in 1970, it is a key center for American astronautics. The Center keeps unique artifacts, including the Apollo 16 capsule, hardware from the legendary moon landing programme, interactive science exhibits, expositions dedicated to the space shuttle, as well as military rocket technology and aircraft. The place is emblematic of the development of the space shuttle and modern rocket technology.
