Presentation of the Public Administration Index 2025

A comprehensive assessment of the state and development of administrative capacity in the public administration was presented at the UNWE using an integrated indicator that measures the ability of administrative structures to ensure ь good governance. The study is part of Project No. KP-06-PN85/17 - Research and Assessment of the Capacity of the State Administration in Bulgaria and Guidelines for Good Governance funded by the Scientific Research Fund. The study, in its ninth edition, involves the UNWE Institute of Economics and Politics, Dimitar Tsenov Academy of Economics in Svishtov, and the Institute of Public Administration, whose representatives attended the meeting: the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, Assoc. Prof. Dr, Yanko Hristozov, Director of the UNWE Institute of Economics and Politics and Vice Rector for International Affairs, Prof. D.Sc. The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov emphasized the significance of the project and its contribution to the development of public administration in Bulgaria: “This is a major, long-term project that provides valuable information on the state and development of the public administration and outlines important directions for its future development. As a university, our mission is not only to generate knowledge but also to communicate the results of such research to both the public and the institutions and individuals who set the direction of administrative policies. At the official ceremony on awarding the prizes for Best Administration we saw the positive and motivating side of the results. Today’s discussion will focus on the factors that form the overall picture. The analysis clearly shows that the frequent political and organizational changes lead to a decline in administrative capacity. The measurement is a prerequisite for better governance, and the Index provides a reliable assessment scale based on a rigorous methodology. We are pleased that the UNWE actively supports and participates in this important process”.

“Among the main tasks we have set for ourselves at the Institute of Economics and Politics alongside the academic publications and research projects, is to conduct analyses that have direct practical benefits for society”, said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov, Director of the Institute of Economics and Politics. “A large portion of our projects are carried out with the support of national and international institutions and are aimed at studying key societal processes.” He noted that the research raises a number of important questions including the tracking of the good and bad practices in the public administration, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of administrative structures and analyzing the changes compared to previous studies. Of particular interest is the question of whether there is a difference between the external evaluation of the administration and its self-assessment.

Assoc. Prof. Yanko Hristozov said that in collecting information for the study, they encountered obstacles related to the insufficient activity and cooperation of the structures, which made the analysis difficult. "That is why we will seek support at the highest institutional level, including from the government, to provide a more complete and reliable basis for future research. If I have to use a comparison, the state administration reminds me of a student before a session – she has the necessary potential, knowledge and opportunities to cope successfully, but often postpones taking the necessary actions with the thought that it will start next Monday."

The Vice-Rector of Dimitar Tsenov Academy of Economics in Svishtov Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zdravko Lyubenov defined the presentation of the results as a natural completion of a long and in-depth research process. "Today's event is the culmination of hard work, in-depth analyses and successful overcoming of a number of methodological and methodological challenges. The result is an objective and comprehensive assessment of the state of public administration in the context of accelerated digitalization and growing public expectations. I am convinced that the information presented will be useful for all levels of government and will serve as a basis for following actions and reforms.

Prof. D.Sc. Borislav Borisov, researcher at the Institute and co-author of the study, emphasized that the problems found are systematic and persistent, which makes the study particularly important. In his presentation, he analyzed the administrative environment in 2025, characterized by political instability, which does not create favorable conditions for achieving high results in the public administration. He drew attention to the composition and structure of the state administration, noting that the issue of its number cannot be considered independently. According to him, it is not decisive whether the administration is large or small, but what functions it performs and what results it achieves. The data show that since 2020 there has been a distinct deterioration in administrative capacity, even if there is a slight improvement for 2025.

Within the framework of the study, 28 elements of administrative capacity were analyzed, and it was found that the external partners of the state administration rate its work lower compared to the self-assessments of the administration. Among the main conclusions, a number of persistent systematic problems stand out: lack of sustainable mechanisms for transforming individual knowledge into institutional memory and organizational learning; insufficient use of data as a basis for decision-making; limited effect of digitalization on the improvement of administrative processes; as well as insufficiently effective and responsible application of innovation and artificial intelligence. The study also found the lack of a knowledge management system, a formal approach to risk management and other deficits in management practices. An important part of the study is the formulated recommendations. Among them Prof. Borissov highlighted the necessity of building an Administrative Capacity Monitoring System to support the transition from accountability based on available resources to accountability based on the results and effects achieved. It is also recommended to rethink the composition and structure of the Administrative Reform Council. As key priorities for the development of the public administration were indicated: moving from a debate on numbers to a debate on productivity, managing data as a public asset, developing a learning administration, responsible and practical introduction of artificial intelligence, strengthening managerial responsibility for the results achieved, more active involvement of stakeholders through feedback mechanisms and reporting on their assessments; as well as a shift from governance focused on compliance with rules and procedures to results-oriented management and societal impact.

Closing Conference on a Project Related to the Chinese Initiative One Belt, One Road

At the UNWE was held the Closing Conference on the project The Chinese Belt and Road Initiative in the Black Sea Region: Analysis of Opportunities and Risks for Bulgaria, Headed by Prof. Dr. Georgy Chankov, Director of Europe-China Research Center and lecturer at the International Relations Department.

The event was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Vodenicharova, Vice Rector for Research, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov, Vice Rector for International Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Plamen Ralchev, Head of the International Relations Department; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svetla Boneva, Dean of the International Economics and Politics Department, Mr. Rady Naydenov, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Yasen Georgiev, Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Policy, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Antonina Habova and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elizabeth Yoneva from the International Relations Department, as well as lecturers, researchers and representatives of the academic community.

The Conference was opened by the Vice Rector for International Affairs Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov. In his welcoming remarks he highlighted the significance of the fundamental studies, financed by the Scientific Research Fund, and used Prof. Chankov's project as an example of successfully implemented research. According to him, the project is important for the University also because of the active cooperation with China, he also noted that the UNWE has over 50 agreements with Chinese universities and in recent years our university has hosted significant forums with the participation of large Chinese delegations. He also emphasized the dual Bachelor's and Master's programmes with Chinese universities - Hebei University of Economics and Business /HUEB/, Tianjin Foreign Studies University /TFSU/ and Shanghai Jiao Tong University /SJTU/. Assoc. Prof. Hristozov greeted Prof. Chankov and the entire team for the achieved results and responsible management of the project and wished them to continue their research activities by completing new successful research initiatives.

The Vice Rector for Research Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Vodenicharova, who outlined the significance of the project for theUNWE and emphasized the strengthened cooperation with the academic institutions in Ningbo /Ningbo University of Technology, NBUT/. Assoc. Prof. Vodenicharova said she hopes the team will continue to evolve and strengthen the established partnerships.

Prof. Georgy Chankov presented the project and the achieved results. He expressed thankfulness to the participants from the research collective and to the UNWE administration for the provided support, as well as to the Scientific Research Fund, underlining the significance of the Fund’s financial support for the completion of worthwhile scientific research. According to him, the project contributed to the accumulation of research results and the broadening of international academic cooperation. Among the main activities Prof. Chankov singled out the participation of the research team with reports in various conferences, the preparation of publications indexed in reputable scientific databases and the work visits to China. He emphasized the successful cooperation with the Confucius Institute and the established relations with the Center of Cooperation between China and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and with the Ningbo University of Technology. These relations provide the opportunity for future collaboration on joint research projects and publications. A collective monograph summarizing the achieved scientific results was also prepared within the framework of the project. Prof. Chankov noted that despite the difficulties associated with the pandemic, the delay in indexation and the workload of the participants, the main tasks have been completed.

The Permanent Secretary of teh Ministry of Defence Mr. Rady Naydenov outlined the importance of UNWE as an institution that prepares a workforce with successful professional realization in the state administration, diplomacy and international relations. He noted that the combination of solid theoretical preparation with practical experience is a key ingredient for the creation of competent professionals. According to him, despite the advancement of digitalization and AI the personal contact, dialogue and the ability to communicate remain the foundation of diplomatic work. He emphasized the necessity for Bulgaria to think strategically and look for its place in the constantly evolving global order. In conclusion, he expressed desire for closer cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UNWE, noting the necessity for a well-prepared and competent workforce in the fields of diplomacy and international relations.

The implementation of the project The Chinese Belt and Road Initiative in the Black Sea Region: Analysis of Opportunities and Risks for Bulgaria has significantly contributed to the advancement of UNWE's international academic cooperation and opens up new opportunities for research dialogue, joint research and active assertion of the University’s place in the global academic environment.

UNWE and Pennsylvania State University Signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the Fields of Nuclear Security, Energy and Scientific Research

The UNWE and the Pennsylvania State University operating through its Engineering College, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation, marking the beginning of strategic, academic and research cooperation in the fields of nuclear security, energy, cybersecurity and the training of qualified specialists for the nuclear industry. The document was signed online in accordance with the established accepted practices for international institutional cooperation.

In the online meeting took part representatives of both institutions - the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, the Vice Rector for International Affairs Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov and Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the UNWE Nuclear Security Support Center and the Institute of Enhancing the Research Capacity in the Nuclear Industry and Nuclear Security as well as a lecturer at the UNWE National and Regional Security Department, and from Pennsylvania State University - Tonya Peeples, Dean at the University, Matthew David Zerphy and Robert Rabb.

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov welcomed the participants and presented the UNWE as the largest business university in Bulgaria and Southeastern Europe with approximately 20 000 students and a 106 years of history. “The focus of the present memorandum is the strengthening of capacity in nuclear security and energy. It is vital for us to build partnerships with leading world universities like Pennsylvania State University, which will contribute to the preparation of a new generation of specialists in strategically important areas", emphasized Prof. Dimitrov. He pointed out the significance of nuclear energy for Bulgaria in the context of the expansion of the sector and the construction of new nuclear capabilities: “Bulgaria is in a period of serious development of its nuclear and energy infrastructure. Along with the necessity of nuclear security experts, the demand for highly qualified nuclear engineering personnel also grows. This is why we working on the creation of new educational programmes and broadening the research in the field”. During the event Prof. Dimitrov officially announced the start of the partnership between the two universities by characterizing it as a “model of the globalized world" founded on shared knowledge, research cooperation and common goals.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov greeted the meeting participants and outlined the significance of the international academic cooperation for the UNWE: “For the UNWE the international cooperation is a strategic priority. We are confident that partnering with Pennsylvania State University will provide new opportunities for academic exchange, research and development of innovative educational programmes”.

Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov expressed thankfulness to his colleagues at Pennsylvania State University for their prompt response and support in developing the partnership which was realized with the support of the U.S. Department of State. “This partnership is an important step in the development of our educational and research activities in the nuclear security field. We plan to work together on projects, as well as organize events related to the cybersecurity of nuclear infrastructure", said Prof. Spasov and emphasized that the cooperation will aid the development of a nuclear security Master’s programme and future initiatives in the nuclear engineering field.

On behalf of Pennsylvania State University Tonya Peeples expressed her contentment with the signing of the memorandum and outlined the significance of the international academic cooperation. “We are excited to mark the beginning of this partnership. We believe that the future belongs to clean energy, safety and security. Pennsylvania State University has made substantial investments in the nuclear security education and research, integrating advances in cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies”. She stated that the work on realizing specific initiatives begins after signing the document and expressed her confidence that the future partnership will include students from both institutions.

Matthew David Zerphy emphasized the importance of the international cooperation for the development of human capital and new technologies in the nuclear field. “The cooperation between the UNWE and Pennsylvania State University will create outstanding opportunities for exchange of knowledge, human capital development and participation in research on modern reactor technologies. We eagerly await the future visits of lecturers and students as well as the joint work on research projects", he said.

The Memorandum framework includes the development and realization of joint educational and research initiatives and the exchange of lecturers, researchers, experts and students as well as the organization of conferences, seminars, study sessions and other academic forums. Special emphasis was placed on the cooperation in the nuclear security, nuclear energy, risk management and cybersecurity of critical infrastructure fields. The two institutions will also collaborate on topics related to the application of AI in the nuclear industry and security, development of human capital and the preparation of highly qualified specialists for the demands of the energy sector. The partnership also envisions the exchange of academic data, research publications and good practices as well as participation in joint international projects and programmes supported by national and international organizations.

The signed Memorandum lays the foundation for a long-term strategic cooperation between the UNWE and Pennsylvania State University and opens up new opportunities for partnership in the education, scientific research and international academic cooperation in areas with key significance for the energy security, technological innovation and sustainable development.

Representatives of UNWE were among the special guests at the official opening of the new STEM Center at 95. Prof. Ivan Shishmanov Secondary School in Sofia. The event was attended by Chief Assist. Dr. Nikola Gaydarov, lecturer in the Economics of Tourism Department and Coordinator for the implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation with the School, as well as Atanas Dimitrov, Director of the Inter-University Center for Career Development /in the picture below in the center/. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of educational institutions, local authorities, partners of the School, teachers, pupils and parents, all united by the idea of a modern, practical and future-oriented education.

The participation of UNWE representatives in the event is a natural extension of the partnership with 95. Prof. Ivan Shishmanov Secondary School established with the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and the School Principal Yavor Ivanov. The Memorandum provides for lectures, training sessions, practical classes, joint projects and pupils` participation in the initiatives related to the business and tourism. The partnership is an expression of the UNWE commitment to building sustainable relations between the secondary education, higher education and the business sector by supporting the young people in their transition to a university environment and future professional careers.

The new STEM Center opened at the School, provides pupils with yet another opportunity to develop analytical thinking, digital skills, initiative and an entrepreneurial spirit. The specialized and vocational fields - including entrepreneurship, business administration and tour guiding - naturally align with the academic profile of the UNWE and provide access to university expertise, career prospects and practical knowledge.

Our Lecturers Participated in the Think Tank of the ENGAGE.EU Alliance in Toulouse

The Artificial Intelligence and its development for the benefit of society was the key topic that brought together twenty researchers from nine ENGAGE.EU partner universities at Toulouse Capitole University, France, for the new edition of the ENGAGE.EU Think Tank which took place in early June.

Our university was represented by Prof. Dr. Luben Boyanov, lecturer at the Information Technologies and Communications Department, and Chief Assist. Dr. Stoicho Dulevsky from the Public Legal Studies Department.

During the 4-days of the Forum, jurists, economists and digital technology experts shared their perspectives and discussed AI’s influence on the society and its ethical, societal and legal consequences. The conditions necessary for its responsible development were also examined with a focus on the regulatory, institutional and organizational frameworks for the development and deployment of AI systems. The programme also included numerous interdisciplinary discussions aimed at identifying new research topics with enhanced cooperation across Europe.

The participants united around the idea that such meetings have the potential to give impetus to the development of new projects and partnerships to support the elevation of AI in the coming years.

145 Prospective Students Participated in a General Competitive Exam in Mathematics in the Format of State Matriculation Exam at Our University

The UNWE jointly with the University of Economics – Varna, D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics – Svishtov and the University of Food Technologies – Plovdiv, held a General Competitive Exam in Mathematics in the format of State Matriculation Exam for general education preparation in which took part 145 prospective students.

Prof. Dr. Milena Dimova, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the UNWE Applied Informatics and Statistics Faculty and Head of Mathematics the Department, welcomed the pupils with the words: "As a result of the successful partnership between several universities in the country, the implementation of the General Competitive Exam in Mathematics has already become a good tradition. Mathematics is the foundation of economic education, but also a powerful tool for the development of logical thinking and intelligence. I believe that all of you, as prospective students, share this conviction once you have chosen to take this exam, so I greet you for that".

The Scientific Secretary of Mathematics Department Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maya Mikrenska welcomed the participants and presented the opportunities for development that the University provides to its future students. The Fourth Annual Meeting of the Association of Language Schools in Bulgaria Strengthened the Relation between the Secondary and the Higher Education

The Fourth Annual Meeting of the Association of Language Schools in Bulgaria /ALSB/ gathered in the UNWE Educational and Recreation Facilities in Ravda principals and teachers from elite language schools in the country and representatives of the University academic community. For a consecutive year the Forum has established itself as a platform for the exchange of good practices, discussion of current challenges in the education and the development of cooperation between the secondary and the higher education.

The participants were welcomed by Prof. Dr. Matilda Alexandrova, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, who greeted them on behalf of the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov. "In recent years, the Association of Language Schools in Bulgaria has established itself as an important bridge between the secondary and the higher education. The initiatives created enable the students to develop their knowledge and skills, and the educational institutions to build sustainable partnerships for the benefit of young people", said Prof. Svetlana. Alexandrova.

The Chairman of the Board of ALSB and Head of the UNWE International Economic Relations and Business Department Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasil Petkov presented a report on the activities of the Association for the 2025/2026 academic year. "We see a steady increase in the interest in the Association's initiatives. In addition to increasing the number of participants, a community is formed among the pupils, based on the pursuit of knowledge, cooperation and a healthy competitive spirit", noted the Chairman and pointed out the successfully implemented initiatives, including a sports competition, essay competitions in a foreign language organized by the UWNE Foreign Economic Relations and Business Department, the International Relations Department and the Political Science Department, the traditional interdisciplinary language competition and the 3^rd National Competition in Civic Education and International Cooperation.

Within the framework of the agenda, the members of the Association unanimously accepted five new schools as members of the organization – Yoan Ekzarh High School for Foreign Languages - Varna, Dr. Petar Beron Secondary School – Kostinbrod, Yane Sandansky Specialized High School – Sandanski, 125. Boyan Penev Secondary School – Sofia and Petar Bogdan High School of Foreign Languages Teaching – Montana.

Special interest among the participants was aroused by the presentations of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alexander Hristov, Vice Dean for Quality and International Cooperation of the UNWE International Economics and Politics Faculty and lecturer at the International Economic Relations and Business Department, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Antonia Pencheva, lecturer at the Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics Department, who presented current topics related to the communications, digital education and the development of key competencies among the young people.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alexander Hristov delivered a presentation on the Discontent Managing in Social Networks. In his presentation, he examined practical approaches for managing the communication crises, dealing with negative comments and effective presence of educational institutions in the digital environment. "When communicating on social networks, it is important to control conflicts in time and not to allow their escalation. The successful communication requires a quick response, clear messages and the ability to move from public to private dialogue when the situation requires it", emphasized Assoc. Prof. Hristov and pointed out the differences between the trolls and the haters, the possibilities for limiting the negative effects of online attacks and the role of institutions in building a sustainable communication strategy.

In his presentation on the Digitally Enriched Foreign Language Training for Active European Citizenship and Democratic Culture Assoc. Prof. Dr. Antonia Pencheva introduced the participants to the project Interactive Digital Challenges in a Multicultural Environment /ENLACED/, implemented in partnership between the universities and organizations from Romania, Cyprus, Ukraine and Bulgaria. "The modern students learn most effectively when they are actively involved in the learning process. The ENLACED project combines the development of language competences with the formation of a democratic culture through interactive digital challenges and work in a multicultural environment", said Assoc. Prof. Pencheva. She presented the training platform, which includes ten thematic modules dedicated to the freedom of speech, media literacy, civic participation, environmental responsibility, intercultural communication and democratic values. The training is organized through interactive digital escape room challenges, which encourage the active participation of learners and provide an opportunity for educators to track progress and provide feedback in real time.

A special place in the Forum programme was occupied by the discussion on the Relation between the Secondary Education and the Higher Education: Opportunities and Prospects within which the current challenges facing the education system and the opportunities for closer interaction between the two educational levels were examined. Prof. Dr. Matilda Alexandrova highlighted the opportunities for the development of joint projects between the UNWE, the Schools and the Association, funded under the European programmes. She emphasized the potential of such initiatives for the development of civic, social and professional competencies among the young people and for the further strengthening of the relations between the secondary and the higher education. The participants exchanged ideas for future joint initiatives, including the organization of new educational events, student competitions, trainings and projects aimed at the development of young people and supporting their successful transition to the higher education.

The Fourth Annual Meeting of ALSB once again confirmed the importance of the cooperation between the Schools and the University and strengthened the role of the Association as an active professional community working for the development of language education, the exchange of good practices and the preparation of future generations of young leaders of Bulgaria.

The International Exhibition which was held in the period 3 - 6 June2026 in Plovdiv, once again proved to be the most significant forum in Southeastern Europe in the spheres of defence and security. Having a history of more than 31 years the International Exhibition HEMUS has established itself as a unique platform, uniting national institutions, armed forces, the defence industry and academia, providing a suitable environment for strengthening the strategic cooperation.

The UNWE National and Regional Security Department was once again among the established participants in the exhibition. It strengthened its presence with a designated stall, which turned into a platform for academic discussions and the exchange of expert knowledge. The lecturers did not only present the Department activities but also took an active part in the international science conference, where they shared their research on current national security issues. Among the lecturers were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noncho Dimitrov, Head of the National and Regional Security Department, Secretary General for Digitalization and Cybersecurity and Vice Dean for Quality and International Cooperation of the UNWE Economcis of Infrastructure Faculty, Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the Nuclear Security Support Centre and the Institute of Enhancing the Research Capacity in the Nuclear Industry and Nuclear Security, Prof. Dr. Tilcho Ivanov, the doyen of the Department, Prof. Dr. Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Director of the Centre for Strategic Studies in Defence and Security, Chief Assist. Apart from the research activity and learning programmes the stall attendees had the opportunity to see the practical training the National and Regional Security Department conducts. The guests of the exhibition were able to experience a real cyberattack with scenarios in a real environment at the Department's cyber polygon, as well as test the game Breakthrough through which anyone can learn how to hack defences while having fun.

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov visited the stall and got acquainted with his colleagues’ work. The Minister of Defence Dimitar Stoyanov showed significant interest in the presentation and spoke with the team about the crucial role of the research capacity in the capability development of the security and defence areas.

During the event students of speciality National and Regional Security had the opportunity to learn about the latest technologies in cybersecurity, unmanned systems, Artificial Intelligence and anti-drone solutions. The visit to the International Exhibition HEMUS 2026 became a valuable part of their practical training, providing them with a real-world perspective on the future of the defence industry.

The National and Regional Security Department was awarded a certificate for successful participation in the International Exhibition HEMUS 2026. The distinction is recognition of the Department’s contribution toward the development of the professional dialogue and the preparation of professionals that can build Bulgaria’s future security in a dynamic environment.

This year’s edition was focused on the deep technologies and their relation with the defence. During the Industrial Forum the Deputy Minister of Innovation and Technological Transformation Mira Yosifova highlighted that the partnership between the industry, the research and the state is critical for achieving the country’s strategic priorities.

With the participation of 258 companies and 28 countries the International Exhibition HEMUS 2026 once again proved to be a strategic center for the exchange of knowledge and innovation. The presence of the academic community represented by the UNWE National and Regional Security Department is a bright example of the successful relation of the theory with the practical demands of the national security.

The Economics of Tourism Department Set the Foundation for a New Health, Energy and Sustainability Tourism Brand

The solar health, mysticism and Earth energies were the key terms of the traditional discussion Forum held by the Economics of Tourism Department every June at different locations. Hotel Sienna Palace 4* and the Primorsko municipality were the hosts of this year’s edition.

The event brought together representatives from the academia, local authorities, the tourism industry, NGO`s and the media around the idea of creating a new tourism model based around health, nature, cultural heritage and innovations.

“The idea is to expand our consciousness through ideas and theses that will develop the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast in a wider season, adding value to its promotion through positive messages”, said at the opening of the event Prof. Dr. Mariana Yaneva, Head of the Economics of Tourism Department.

In her statement Prof. Mariana Yaneva presented Brand Bulgaria’s vision and positioned Primorsko and Strandzha as destinations for sea, health and wellness tourism. According to her, the energy tourism provokes great interest among the tourists worldwide so the combination of health tourism and the mysticity of Strandzha is very suitable for Primorsko municipality.

The Economics of Tourism Department team took an active role in the Conference’s work programme. The Solar Health concept was presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asya Pandzherova, who, in addition to being a lecturer, is also a co-founder of the hotel management company Hotels and Dreams. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Kaleichev presented his research findings, which indicated that the public's perception of Primorsko is 85% favorable, 10% neutral and only 5% unfavorable. Visitors are happy with the beaches' cleanliness, the ratio between the price for the quality, the tranquil family environment, the upgraded infrastructure, the cultural and sporting events, and as a reason for coming, apart from the classic sea factor, they point to the element of mysticism, the interest in traditions and culture, the preserved nature. Chief Assist. Dr. Ralitsa Georgieva acquainted the audience with a marketing model for the development lifecycle of Primorsko. The topic of national and regional identity was developed by Prof. D.Sc. Tanya Parusheva, emphasizing the importance of tangible and intangible cultural heritage as the basis for building an authentic tourism product. Chief Assist. Dr. Nikola Gaydarov spoke about the role of transport connectivity, and the topic of institutional synergy and sustainable tourism was presented by Chief Assist. Dr. Veronika Denizova and Assist. Dr. Tihomir Draganov. Stanko Shterev, Doctoral student and representative of the Bulgarian Tourism Association, gave an overview of the opportunities for interpretation of the mystical traditions and rituals of the ancient Thracians as a factor for the development of cultural tourism, national and regional identity.

Primorsko’s local authorities were represented by Zlatina Tyulieva, Chairwoman of Primorsko Municipal Council, and Yulianna Ivanova, Head of the Directorate of Culture, Education and Sport at Primorsko Municipality. They highlighted the development of crucial infrastructural projects as well as the construction of a modern harbour in Primorsko, which will provide the opportunity to attract higher-caliber tourists. In addition to the care for the natural resources, the Municipality's rich cultural, sports and event programme was also noted.

The increasing attractiveness of Primorsko was also confirmed by Martin Marinov, Marketing and Sales Manager of Siena Palace Hotel. He also pointed out a number of new opportunities related to the holding of stages of the Cycling Tour of Bulgaria and cycling enthusiasts.

The region’s potential for climate healing and recreation was discussed by representatives of Rafael - Info, Culture, and Tourism Association and the Bulgarian Association for Climate Healing and Health Tourism /BACHHT/ - Zlaty Kovacheva and Valentin Atanasov. Valery Paunov, regional representative of the tour guide agency Cheddock, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irena Emilova, Head of the Tourism Department of New Bulgarian University, also joined the discussion.

The Forum concluded with a visit to the Thracian sanctuary Begliktash which attracts thousand of local and international tourists every year with its myths and mysticism.

The Rector Awarded the Winners in the National Competition Young Economist 2026

The winners of the National Competition Young Economist 2026 received their awards during a special ceremony. Our university was a co-host of the Competition which was held for the 22nd time by the Union of Bulgarian Economists.

The Rector Dr. Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov greeted the laureates by highlighting the relevance of this year’s theme - Bulgaria in the Eurozone: Expectations, Opportunities, Expected Outcomes and Challenges - and emphasized that the UNWE actively supports similar initiatives with the aim to “make young people think – to think creatively about what our way forward will be after joining the Eurozone”. He pointed out the positive cooperation of the University with the secondary schools in the country, as well as the active work of the two associations which were founded by the UNWE – the Association of Economic Schools in Bulgaria and the Association of Language Schools in Bulgaria – that strengthen the relation between the secondary and the higher education.

In the spirit of the ongoing FIFA World Cup, Prof. Dimitrov shared with the audience not only data from the formal economic research on the Eurozone but also a peculiar personal observation: all member countries of the Eurozone successfully qualified their national football teams for the European and international competitions. He wished the young researchers courage, persistence, and future success and awarded some of the prizes.

Our graduates once again distinguished themselves in the challenging rivalry during the Competition by claiming the top places in Student and Doctoral Student categories.

Kaloyan Zhelev, second-year undergraduate student of speciality Finance took the 2^nd place in Student category.

The special award for the UNWE in Doctoral Student category won Daniil Tanev from the International Economic Relations and Business Department.

The nomination certificate for successful participation for earning more than 29 points won Nikolai Yovchev, Master`s degree student of speciality Financial Management, Boris Miloshev, third-year undergraduate of speciality Finance and the Doctoral student Valerie Konicheva from the Finance Department.

She highlighted the significant interest and active participation of the undergraduates, Doctoral studnets and young specialists and entrepreneurs under 35 in this year’s edition of the National Competition Young Economist and also noted the high quality of the works not only of the undergraduates and Doctoral students, but also of the youngest participants - the high school pupils.

Prof. D.Sc./Econ./ Nikolay Nenovsky Was Re-Elected as Member of the Bulgarian National Bank Governing Council

Prof. D.Sc./Econ./ Nikolay Nenovsky, Director of the Monetary Research Center /MRC/ and lecturer at the Finance Department at our university and the University of Picardy Jules Verne in France, was re-elected as a member of the Governing Council of the Bulgarian National Bank /BNB/. This is his third term in the BNB management as his career at the Bank has began in 1996, when he held various expert and management positions in the analytical units. He also holds positions in the legislative, executive and judicial authorities as an Advisor to the Minister of Finance of Bulgaria, as well as a member of the Economic Advisory Council and the Economic and Social Council under the President of the Republic of Bulgaria.

Prof. Nikolay Nenovsky is related to the academic and lecturing communities since 1991. He is a frequent Guest Lecturer at Italian, French, Chinese, Russian, Lebanese, Romanian and Japanese universities. His scientific interests are in the fields of monetary theory and monetary politics, international economy and monetary history. He has authored numerous articles and monographs, published in leading Bulgarian and international research magazines and journals.

He is awarded the UNWE Commemorative Silver Medal for his significant contribution to the field of scientific research, and he is the holder of the Award for Lecturing and Research from the French Ministry of Education and Research.

Prof. Nikolay Nenovsky is awarded a certificate by the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov for achieving the highest number of points from publications in international databases in 2024.

Our University Participated in the Festival of Labour and Production Cooperatives and Social Enterprises

The UNWE took part in the traditional Festival of Labour and Production Cooperatives and Social Enterprises organized by the National Union of Labour and Production Cooperatives with the support of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy in the framework of the Social Economics Action Plan for 2026-2027.

In the Greeting Letter by the Rector to the organizers and participants of the Festival is pointed out: “This forum is a significant event that presents an opportunity to promote the cooperative model and social enterprise as sustainable mechanisms for the economic development, social inclusion and the creation of societal value. The Festival is a shining example of the endeavor to combine the economic efficiency with the social responsibility - values which are more relevant than ever. I am confident that these initiatives will encourage the exchange of good practices, create new partnerships and discover opportunities for developing enterprises that put people, society and sustainable development at the center of their activity”.

Guest of the Festival was Nadia Klisurska, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Policy, who outlined that such events are an important tool for promoting the public support for enterprises that combine the economic success with the social mission. She highlighted the significance of the Product of Social Enterprise brand which assists the social and professional integration of workers in the social economy. Each product carries its own personal story, idea and opportunity for development. Each purchase from a social enterprise contributes to the creation of a better and more inclusive environment where anyone can succeed”.

Participants in this year’s edition included social enterprises and labour production cooperatives from across the country. They presented various products and services - from souvenirs, works of art and herbal products to social activities and initiatives aimed at supporting the people with disabilities, young people and other vulnerable groups.

UNWE Representatives Took Part in the BULATOM XXV International Nuclear Conference

A delegation from our university took part in the 25th edition of the International Nuclear Conference on the Bulgarian Nuclear Power—National, Regional and Global Energy Security organized by the Bulgarian Nuclear Forum /BULATOM/. It was led by Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the Nuclear Security Support Center and the Institute for Enhancing Research Capacity in the Field of Nuclear Industry and Nuclear Security and lecturer at the National and Regional Security Department.

The participation of UNWE was related to the development of training and expertise in the field of nuclear security and the Master's programme in Economics of Defence and Security with specialization in Nuclear Security headed by Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov.

The participants in the forum included Georgy Tasev, Doctoral student and administrator of the Master’s programme in Nuclear Security; the Doctoral students Nikola Petrov, Nesrin Mellat, Anna-Maria Nikolaeva and Muhammed Shihab Ahmed al-Dulaimi as well as the students Vangelia Tancheva, Gakeoniatse Malaky, Shireen Muhammed, Amany Mohtar Muhammed, Kristina Baleva, and Tony Toneva. The undergraduates and the Doctoral students had the opportunity to learn about the current processes in the nuclear energy and security as well as to contact with representatives of the institutions, businesses and the expert community.

The forum brought together representatives of state institutions, regulatory authorities, the energy sector, academia and experts from the country and abroad. The discussions examined the current issues related to the role of nuclear energy in energy security, the development of new capacities, the sustainability of the electricity system and Bulgaria's place in the regional and European energy context

During the Conference, emphasis was placed on the necessity of reliable baseload capacities to guarantee the stability of the system in the context of the increasing production from renewable sources, the importance of Kozloduy NPP, the prospects for new nuclear projects and the preparation of specialists for the sector.

UNWE’s participation in the forum solidifies the active role of our university in the preparation of young specialists and the development of academic expertise in the nuclear security area.

Memorandum of Cooperation with the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy in the Field of Employment and Social Entrepreneurship

The UNWE and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy signed a Memorandum of Cooperation that will build upon the current partnership in the social economy and corporate social responsibility areas. The document was signed by the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and Minister Natalia Efremova.

“By signing this memorandum the UNWE and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy build upon a successful partnership in spheres with key significance for the economic and social development. As a leading economics university the UNWE has a crucial role in the public debates and the development of policies related to the employment, social economy and sustainable development”, said Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov and emphasized: “I am convinced that the joint initiatives in the areas of youth entrepreneurship, social innovation and corporate social responsibility will create new opportunities for the exchange of knowledge and good practice, will encourage research activity and will strengthen the interaction between the academic community, the institutions and the business. It is especially important that the cooperation will provide for students new opportunities to acquire practical experience, professional development and successful realization in the labour market. I believe that it will contribute to the construction of an inclusive and competitive economy and will establish the University as an active partner in political development and decisions made in the public interest.”

“Among the highlights of the agreement is the promotion among the businesses and workers of the principles enshrined in the European Directive on strengthening the principle of equal pay for equal work for men and women, which is about to be transposed into the national legislation of Bulgaria. The UNWE is the right place for a discussion on this topic. Organizing similar informative events will give the academic community an opportunity to express an opinion on the effect of the policies developed and applied by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy”, said Minister Natalia Efremova.

Another important topic was the partnership between the two institutions in the areas of social and youth entrepreneurship. The Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and the UNWE will continue their cooperation in carrying out studies and research in the field of social economy, social innovations and social responsibility. The Memorandum stipulates the organization of public lectures and discussions, related to these topics. Among the objectives in the document is the securement of better opportunities for professional realization and career development through internships and practices.

Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov Participated in Mobility under the Erasmus+ Program at Panteion University in Greece

In mid-May, Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the UNWE Nuclear Security Support Center and the Institute for Enhancing Research Capacity in the Field of the Nuclear Industry and Nuclear Security, lecturer at the National and Regional Security Department, participated in a training mobility under the Erasmus+ Programme at Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences in Athens, Greece.

The main objective of the visit was to exchange best practices, learn about the host institution’s experience and discuss opportunities for developing bilateral academic cooperation between the UNWE and Panteion University

During the visit Prof. Spasov held working meetings with representatives of the host university, during which topics related to the development of the educational processes, international project activities and opportunities for future joint initiatives in the fields of security, governance and European policies were discussed.

As part of the mobility programme, a meeting was held with Prof. Dimitris Ziouvas, Professor of Criminal Law at Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences and the Project Coordinator for the Greek partner in the project Development and Implementation of Anti-Corruption Education Programmes for Universities in Bulgaria, Greece and Croatia /EDU-ANTI-CORR/, funded under the Erasmus+ Programme. Current project activities and opportunities to further strengthening of cooperation among the partner institutions were discussed during the meeting.

This mobility initiative has helped to strengthen the partnership between the UNWE and Panteion University and has created additional opportunities for the development of joint educational, research and project activities.

The Eleventh National Meeting of the Association of Economic Schools in Bulgaria Was Held at the Educational and Recreation Facilities of the University in Ravda

The Association of Economic Schools in Bulgaria /AESB/ held its Eleventh National Meeting at the Educational and Recreation Facilities of the UNWE in Ravda. The Association continues its sustainable development and today unites the UNWE and 48 vocational high schools from all over the country. The National Meeting was opened by Prof. Dr. Daniela Feschiyan, Chairwoman of AESB, who welcomed the Directors and representatives of the schools-members of the Association and expressed thankfulness to them for their activity and contribution to the development of the voluntary association.

After participating in the General Assembly of the Association of State Higher Education Schools in the Republic of Bulgaria in Burgas, the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov visited the Facilties of the University in Ravda for the opening of the event and welcomed the representatives of the schools-members of AESB. "The Association of Economic Schools in Bulgaria was established at the initiative of UNWE with the clear goal of building a sustainable partnership between the secondary and the higher education and supporting the development of young people even before they make their choice for professional realization. I am very happy that eleven years later the AESB continues to develop, attract new schools and create opportunities for thousands of students to develop their knowledge and skills. I would like to express thankfulness to all Directors and lecturers for their dedication and for the joint work with the UNWE in the name of quality education and the successful future of young people in Bulgaria", emphasized Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov.

"It is my pleasure to welcome you at the UNWE Facilities in Ravda, where we hold the Eleventh National Meeting of the Association. Thank you for your dedication, for all your ideas, for your attitude and determination, for building the bridge between the secondary education, the university and the business together", addressed the attendees Prof. Dr. Daniela Feschiyan. She emphasized that over the years the AESB has established itself as an effective platform for cooperation between the schools and the UNWE, which supports the professional development of students and creates conditions for a smoother transition between the secondary and the higher education. "Our goal has always been to find that moment when the high school pupil can be inspired, to sow the seed of knowledge and to make the transition between the secondary education and the university smoother, without unnecessary stress. This is precisely the meaning of all the initiatives that we implement together", pointed out the Chairwoman of AESB. Prof. Dr. Daniela Feschiyan expressed gratitude to the Rectors Managing Body of UNWE for the constant support for the activities of the Association and emphasized the contribution of the member-schools to the successes achieved over the years. "During the reporting period, we once again managed to achieve impressive results. More than 1 200 students participated in national and international competitions and educational initiatives. Inspiring so many young people to compete, develop their knowledge and skills and seek their future professional development is a true success. I would like to express thankfulness to all of you, because it was with your help that we were able to achieve these results", said Prof. Feschiyan.

Prof. Dr. Daniela Feschiyan presented the Annual Report on the AESB Activities for the period 2025 - 2026. During the reporting period, three new schools joined the AESB – 15. Adam Mitskevich High School, Intellect State High School of Finance and Economics and M. V. Lomonosov National Vocational High School of Precisе Engineering and Optics. Prof. Dr. Daniela Feschiyan presented summarized results of the National Competition in Finance and Accounting, National Competition in Economics and National Competition in Economics and Management implemented by the AESB.

Prof. Feschiyan also presented the new strategic partnerships of AESB with the Association of the Banks in Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Stock Exchange. Due to them the Bulgarian students will participate in the European Money Quiz competition in Brussels for the first time in 2025. In the national round of the competition this year, after a selection of over 300 students, Stanimir Stanchev, pupil at G.S. Rakovsky Trade High School in Varna, and Velin Gyurov, pupil at the National Trade and Banking High School, qualified to participate in the European Money Quiz. Among the successful initiatives during the year is the joint seminar with the Union of Economists in Bulgaria on the Wealth of Nations as well as events and competitions organized jointly with the Bulgarian Stock Exchange.

In her presentation on the Student Life Cycle: UNWE Policy for Student Inclusion through Training and Practice - Synergy between the Secondary and the Higher Economic Education, Prof. Dr. Matilda Alexandrova presented the University's concept for student development – from the school to the successful professional realization. She introduced the participants to the opportunities for study in 59 Bachelor's degree specialities, over 90 Master's degree specialities and 45 Doctoral Programmes, the high results of institutional accreditation, the digitalization of the educational process and the international opportunities provided by the European university alliance ENGAGE.EU. Prof. Alexandrova also reported a 4% growth in the UNWE prospective student campaign, with 8 266 applicants in the last year, and nearly 5 500 first-year students choosing the our university for their higher education.

Prof. Dr. Tsvetana Stoyanova participated with a presentation on the University - Business: Development and Realization Opportunities for the UNWE Students. The successful realization of students begins during their studies. That is why we consistently develop partnerships with businesses and institutions that enable young people to gain practical experience and build their professional skills even before graduation", emphasized Prof. Stoyanova and presented the results of the development of the UNWE partner network, noting the signing of over 60 new memorandums with organizations and companies such as Lufthansa Technik, Euroins, UNICEF and Forbes. Emphasis was also placed on the career forums held, including the Career Days in which over 90 companies took part and more than 2 000 CVs of students and young specialists were collected. Prof. Stoyanova also presented the achievements of UNWE students, including the awards in the Green Technologies Contest, the awards for investigating journalism and seven medals from the National Mathematics Olympiad. She also informed the participants about the improvements to the University's facilities, including the new shared spaces, the modernized library and renovations to student dormitories, which will provide better conditions for over 1 100 students.

Mrs. Emilia Ivanova, Deputy Chairwoman of AESB and Direcotr of the Private Vocational High School for Banking, Trade and Finance presented a report on the Problems and Prospects for the Bulgarian Vocational Education. "The professional education is facing a number of challenges related to both the admission structure and the staffing of the system. The trend related to the aging of the teaching staff and the shortage of young teachers is particularly worrying", pointed out Mrs. Ivanova. In her analysis, she presented up-to-date data on the development of vocational education in the professional field of Economics, student enrollment trends, the development of economics specialities, problems with "blind classes" and the necessity of better match between the vocational education and the demands of the labour market.

After the presentation of the reports, discussions were held on the current issues related to the development of vocational education, the interaction between the schools and the universities and the opportunities for expanding the partnerships with business. Letters with proposals to the Ministry of Education and Science were initiated to improve the quality of training in the professional field of Economics.

The participants in the National Meeting of AESB gave a high assessment of the reported results and with a full majority adopted the Annual Report on the AESB Activities for the academic year 2025/2026. The Coordination Council of the Association was expanded with the election as its members of Mrs. Diana Stoyanova, Director of the National Trade and Banking High School, Sofia, and Mr. Pavel Chepov, Director of the High School of Commerce, Burgas. In accordance with the agenda, the AESB Action Plan for the academic year 2026/2027 was discussed and adopted, which provides for the continuation and upgrading of the Association's initiatives, the expansion of cooperation between the member-schools, the UNWE and the business, as well as the organization of new competitions, educational forums and joint projects to support the pupils and the teachers.

The Eleventh National Meeting of AESB once again confirmed the role of the Association as a significant factor in the development of economic education in Bulgaria and as a successful model for partnership between the secondary education, the higher education and the business.

The objective of the Association is to increase the quality of education in secondary schools in the country, ensure a smooth transition to higher economic education and search for additional opportunities for vertical integration between the secondary schools and the UNWE and building a bridge between the secondary education, theuniversity and the business.

The realization of the main objective of the Association is achieved by solving the following tasks:

Achieving wide-ranging and well-coordinated joint activity between the secondary economic schools and the UNWE;
Improvement of curricula and development of innovative teaching-methodical aids for basic economic subjects studied in secondary schools;

Over 400 High School Pupils Took Part in the Last Preliminary Exam in Bulgarian Language and Literature for Admission to Our University

Over 400 prospective students took part in the last preliminary exam in format of matriculation exam in Bulgarian Language and Literature for admission to the UNWE. Held in partnership between the UNWE and Regalia Training Centre, the exam confirmed the University's aspiration to be an active partner of its future students even before the admission period.

"Welcome to UNWE, a university with more than 105 years of history and traditions. I am glad to see so many motivated young people who have chosen to continue their education here and become part of our large academic community", said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Antonia Pencheva, lecturer at the Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics Department. She presented to the prospective students some of the opportunities provided by the UNWE, noting that the University trains students in 53 Bachelor’s degree specialties and provides wide opportunities for international mobility under the Erasmus+ Programme and also through the European university alliance ENGAGE.EU. It was outlined the high level of digitalization of University which allows a large part of the student services to be carried out online through the Web-Student platform, as well as the opportunities for profound study of foreign languages and active participation in the sports life of UNWE.

At the end of her welcoming speech, Assoc. Prof. Pencheva wished success to the participants in the preliminary exam and expressed hope to welcome them as part of the academic community of UNWE soon.

Dr. Ekaterina Deliverska, Director of the Educational Activities Directorate, introduced the prospective students to the organization of the exam and the regulations for its implementation. She drew attention to the basic requirements and wished all participants calmness, concentration and successful performance.

The future prospective students had the opportunity to test their knowledge on the exam questions, organized in three modules. The exam included tasks with multiple-choice answers, short free answers, extended free answers and text creation tasks.

The IAEA Regional Seminar on Nuclear Forensics Held at the University Has Ended

The UNWE hosted the IAEA Regional Peer-to-Peer Workshop on Nuclear Forensics, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency /IAEA/. The event took place in the period 1-5 June 2026 and brought together experts, representatives of member states, academics and practitioners in the field of nuclear security and nuclear forensics.

During the five-day programme the participants had the opportunity to exchange experiences and best practices related to the development of national capabilities in the field of nuclear forensics. The training included lectures, practical exercises, group work, discussions and presentations by the participating countries. Among the main topics were key concepts in nuclear forensics, laboratory capabilities, gamma spectrometry, microscopic techniques, isotope ratios and the application of various analytical approaches in the examination of nuclear and other radioactive materials.

In the concluding part of the Workshop Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the UNWE Nuclear Security Support Center, of the Institute for Enhancing Research Capacity in the Field of the Nuclear Industry and Nuclear Security and lecturer at the National and Regional Security Department, expressed thankfulness to the International Atomic Energy Agency for organizing the event and for its ongoing support in building and strengthening capacity in the field of nuclear security at the national and regional levels, as well as to the IAEA team, the lecturers, facilitators and all participants for their active participation, professional contributions and commitment during the working sessions.

Prof. Spasov outlined the importance of such formats for deepening the professional cooperation, the exchange of expertise and the practical training of specialists. In his words, hosting such a seminar is a recognition of UNWE’s active role in the development of education, training and research in the field of nuclear security. He noted that sharing the national experience is essential for improving the preparedness, coordination and interaction among the institutions in the field of nuclear forensics.

The Workshop ended with an assessment of the knowledge and practical skills acquired, as well as with expressed willingness for future cooperation among the participating institutions and experts.

The UNWE highly values its long-standing cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and will continue to support initiatives aimed at enhancing the expert capacity, developing the specialized training and strengthening the international partnerships in the field of nuclear security.

UNWE Participated in the Annual Meeting of the ENGAGE.EU Area Learning

At the end of May, representatives of our university participated in the Area Learning Community Meeting 2026 — the annual meeting of the Area Learning of the European university alliance ENGAGE.EU — which took place at WU Vienna in Austria. The event was attended by Chief Assist. Dr. Violeta Zlatkova, lecturer in the Public Administration Department, Chief Assist. Dr. Maria Dimitrova, lecturer at the Real Estate Property Department, Lia Yoveva, Acting Head of the UNWE Mobility Division, and Nadia Manova, Doctoral student at the Media and Public Communications Department — the UNESCO Chair in Media and Information Literacy and Cultural Policies for Sustainable Development, who represent our university in various working formats and structures of the Alliance.

The meeting was focused on the future development of the Alliance’s Area Learning, the results of the interim evaluation of ENGAGE.EU 2.0, and the strategic priorities through 2035, and it brought together representatives from all partner universities in ENGAGE.EU.

The main topics of discussion were related to the development of joint educational programmes, international and virtual mobility, mechanisms for the recognition of learning outcomes, and the role of university alliances in building the European Higher Education Area. Participants exchanged best practices and ideas for the future development of educational activities within the framework of ENGAGE.EU, with special attention to the sustainability of joint initiatives, measuring their impact and strengthening the cooperation among the partner universities.

During the meeting, the long-term prospects for the European Universities initiative were presented, including the development of the concept of a European degree, the creation of common educational policies and the expansion of opportunities for international cooperation.

The participation of our representatives in the Area Learning Community Meeting 2026 confirms the UNWE’s active role in the development of the ENGAGE.EU alliance and its commitment to creating an innovative, inclusive and internationally oriented educational environment for the benefit of students, lecturers and society.

The Student Council Marked the 35th Anniversary of Its Founding with a Climb to Cherni Vrah

On the occasion of its 35th Anniversary, the UNWE Student Council organized a climb to Cherni Vrah - a symbol of the strive to new heights, unity and an active student community.

The starting point of the route was the Aleko Hut, and the participants went along the path that marked the beginning of the tourist movement in Bulgaria with the climb organized by Aleko Konstantinov in August 1895. The initiative brought together students, lecturers, partners and friends of the student self-government, united by the desire to mark this significant anniversary.

After reaching the summit, the students formed the letters “35 CC” with their bodies - a symbolic gesture honoring the 35^th Anniversary of the founding of the UNWE Student Council. The message that the climb participants sent from the heights of Cherni Vrah is about the continuity between the generations of students, active engagement and a commitment to developing and building upon the traditions of the student community.

The climb provided an opportunity to share experiences, make new friendships and strengthen the relations among students outside the university environment. The participants demonstrated that the student energy and enthusiasm can turn any challenge into an opportunity for unity and inspiration.

By celebrating its 35^th Anniversary amidst the natural beauty of Vitosha Mountain, the UNWE Student Council once again proved that the traditions are best preserved when they are enriched with new ideas, energy and community spirit.

Photovoltaic System Also Provides Power to the Educational and Recreational Facilities of the University in Ravda

In line with the UNWE policy on sustainable development, energy efficiency and environmental protection, a proprietary photovoltaic system was installed at the Educational and Recreational Facilities in the village of Ravda. It is one of UNWE’s most popular venues for recreation, training, conferences and other academic events.

The new solar installation is located on the building’s roof and has an installed capacity of 22.04 kWp. The system includes 38 high-efficiency photovoltaic modules with a rated power of 580 Wp each and a 20 kW hybrid inverter. The electricity generated is intended to cover the facilities own energy demands, thereby reducing electricity costs and the carbon footprint.

The UNWE campus in the village of Ravda was designed in accordance with current national and European regulatory requirements and utilizes modern technologies for the efficient and safe generation of electricity from renewable sources. Some of the modules are installed on a sloped roof, while the rest are mounted on a flat roof structure.

The implementation of the project is another step in the UNWE’s efforts to introduce innovative and environmentally responsible solutions in the management of the university’s infrastructure. Investments in renewable energy sources are part of the university’s long-term strategy for modernization and sustainable development, contributing both to reducing operating costs and to building a greener academic environment.

With the installation of the photovoltaic system, the UNWE campus in the village of Ravda reaffirms its role as a modern educational and recreational center that combines comfortable conditions for learning and leisure with a responsible attitude toward nature and energy sustainability.

UNWE Scientists Participated in the International Forum on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence under the STUDIES-DIG Project in Valencia, Spain

In the beginning of June 2026 scientists and researchers from the UNWE took part in Тhe 5th International Conference on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Applications /ICBDAIA’26/, hosted by the Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain. Международната научна конференция бе организирана съвместно The International Scientific conference was organized in partnership with Ibn Tofail University, Morocco – an academic partner from the associated countries under the project 101131544-STUDIESDIG-HORIZON-MSCA-2022-SE-01.

The STUDIES-DIG Project is coordinated by UNWE and it involves 14 academic and non academic partners from 6 countries. The project is part of Horizon Europe – the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (2021-2027) under the funding scheme of Marie Sklodowska–Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange – RISE.

This prestigious international forum in Valencia, Spain brought together scientists, researchers and experts from different countries to exchange ideas and best practices in the fields of artificial intelligence, digital technology and big data analysis. Guests of honor at the event were the Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Valencia, Mrs. Nadia Krasteva and the Consul-General of the Kingdom of Morocco in Valencia, Mr. Said Drisi El Buzaidi.

As project coordinator the team of scientists from the UNWE included Prof. Dr. Polya Katsamunska from the Public Administration Department, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sylvia Georgieva from the Entrepreneurship Department, Chief Assist. Dr. Krasimira Valcheva from the Public Administration Department and Chief Assist. Dr. Adelina Hadzhiiska from the Criminal Legal Studies Department. In the form took also part D.Sc. Zornitsa Mladenova as a representative of the Rudozem Municipality, which is a non-academic partner in the project.

Within the Conference the Bulgarian participants presented results of their research work and held a number of meetings with representatives of academia from Europe, Africa and other regions of the world. Developments related to the digital transformation of education and the development of modern digital competencies have been of particular interest.

In addition, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ralitsa Veleva from the Public Administration Department also participated in the Conference with her own scientific contribution through results of the project Research and Evaluation of the Capacity of State Administration in Bulgaria and Guidelines for Good Governance /Contract KP-06-PN85/17/, with Head of the Prpject Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yanko Hristozov and execution period 2025-2028. The project is aimed at analyzing the capacity of public administration in Bulgaria and formulating recommendations for improving good governance and public policies.

All presented papers by the Bulgarian scientists will be published in Springer-Scopus Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Applications /ICBDAIA’26/.

The UNWE scientists were awarded Certificates of Appreciation from the Conference organizers for their successful participation in the International Forum on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Valencia, Spain.

Along with that, on 3 June 2026 at the invitation of Consul General Mrs. Nadia Krasteva, the Bulgarian delegation visited the General Consulate of the Republic of Bulgaria in Valencia. Within the meeting, opportunities for expanding the Bulgarian-Spanish academic cooperation and for realizing joint future projects were discussed. Information about the successful presentation of the Bulgarian scientists at the international scientific forum was published on the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria and on the Facebook pages of the Consulate General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Valencia and the electronic newspaper Nova Duma in Spain.

Within the framework of the STUDIES-DIG project, jointly with Ibn Tofail University, Morocco, the UNWE will organize the next edition of the Forum in 2027 in Sofia. To host such a significant international forum by the UNWE is a recognition of the authority of the Bulgarian academic community and its contribution to the development of international scientific cooperation.

The participation of the Bulgarian scientists from UNWE in the 5th International Conference on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Applications /ICBDAIA’26/ contributed to the strengthening of existing international partnerships and to the creation of new contacts with universities and scientific organizations working not only in in the fields of artificial intelligence, Big Data and digital technologies.

Young Researchers and Doctoral Students from the UNWE Participated in the Prestigious ENGAGE.EU International Scientific Forum in Mannheim

A delegation of seven Doctoral students and one lecturer from the UNWE participated in the prestigious international seminar - the ENGAGE.EU Workshop for Early-Stage Researchers. The event which took place in the period 19-21 May 2026, was hosted by the University of Mannheim, Germany.

The scientific forum brought together 40 early-career researchers from all 10 partner universities in the European ENGAGE.EU University, providing a valuable platform for exchanging ideas, presenting current research and establishing long-lasting contacts.

The representatives of UNWE were Prof. Dr. Nikolay Denchev, Scientific Secretary of the Entrepreneurship Department, and the Doctoral students Anton Aladzhov, Antonina Lozanova, Emanuil Diamandiev, Maria Yaneva, Milena Vinarova, Miroslav Varbanov and Neli Simeonova. The discussions were organized in four key thematic areas: Inequalities, Artificial Intelligence, Innovations, Transitions.

The event was officially opened by Prof. Jutta Mata, Vice President for Research at the University of Mannheim. The representatives of UNWE were actively involved throughout the three days of the forum, both as presenters of their own research and as participants in the discussions.

Prof. Dr. Nikolay Denchev supported the young researchers by moderating one of the key scientific sessions in the thematic area of Innovations.

In addition to the academic sessions, the forum also provided innovative formats for building the capacity of young researchers. The representatives of UNWE participated in mock job interviews, where they received valuable feedback from leading professors and managers at global technology and industry leaders such as SAP and Pepperl+Fuchs. Our Doctoral students also completed specialized practical courses focused on the research ethics, writing successful grant proposals, researchers’ mental health and interactive methods for collaborative research.

During the closing session, new opportunities for young researchers of UNWE within the alliance were announced, including access to the PhD Course Catalog, research visits and use of the Research Community Platform, as well as the hosting of the next ESR Workshop in 2027.

Students from the University Took Part in Session of RISE Balkans Project Focused on the Youth Participation and Good Governance

The UNWE hosted a data collection session on the Youth and Governance Reality Check as part of the RISE Balkans project – Empowering Youth Voices: Responsibility, Integrity, Solidarity, and Civic Engagement in the Balkans. The event was attended by 35 students from our university, who actively participated in discussions on the role of young people in public life, civic engagement, integrity, responsibility and participation in democratic processes.

The RISE Balkans project is a 24-month initiative funded by the European Union, aimed at strengthening the youth participation in democratic life, transparency and anti-corruption initiatives in the Balkan region. Project activities involve partners from Albania, North Macedonia, Greece, Bulgaria and Croatia, with UNWE being one of the Bulgarian partners in the consortium.

The session is part of the activities under the project’s first Work Package - Youth and Governance: Reality Check—which focused on researching, analyzing and validating data regarding youth participation and perceptions of governance in the partner countries. The main objective of the meeting was to gather information on students’ attitudes, views and experiences on topics related to the governance, transparency, civic participation and trust in institutions.

The participants had the opportunity to share their views on the challenges facing the active civic engagement, as well as on the conditions necessary for greater inclusion of young people’s voices in the decision-making processes. Through such initiatives, the RISE Balkans project creates a space for open dialogue, the exchange of ideas and a better understanding of the needs and expectations of young people in the region.

Representatives from the UNWE visited students at Georgy Rakovsky Vocational High School in the town of Kostenets and presented the opportunities for education, professional development and successful careers that the University offers to prospective students.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivaylo Ivanov, Coordinator of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the UNWE and the municipality of Kostenets, lecturer at the Industrial Business Department, and Atanas Dimitrov, Director of the Inter-University Center for Career Development, presented to students the University’s rich academic portfolio, modern educational environment and extensive opportunities for personal and professional development.

During the meeting Atanas Dimitrov encouraged the young people to pursue their dreams and invest in their future: “Never stop dreaming! Invest in yourselves. If you choose the UNWE, you’ll find 54 specialities, 26 sports, modern facilities and a unique library”. The UNWE representatives emphasized the University’s strong relations with the business community and institutions that support the successful professional development of its graduates.

Margarita Mincheva, Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Kostenets, encouraged the high school pupils to think about their own career development: “When I was your age, I had no idea what would be useful for me to study. I am glad that, due to the Memorandum that the Mayor of the municipality Mr. Yordan Angelov signed with UNWE, the necessary information is now more easily and accessibly available to you”.

The initiative is part of the active partnership between the UNWE and the municipality of Kostenets, aimed at helping young people choose their educational and career paths.

From Campuses to Communities: 73 University Alliances, Including ENGAGE.EU, Discussed Their Future in Europe

In early June, Strasbourg hosted the FOREU4ALL workshop – a union of all participants in the “European Universities” initiative. The forum, entitled From Campuses to Communities: Enhancing Engagement and Sense of Belonging in European Universities, brought together representatives from 73 alliances at the European Parliament. The meeting was focused on building stronger university communities, increasing the engagement and a sense of belonging, as well as the role of communications teams in this process.

Building a community around the ten partner universities of ENGAGE.EU is also one of the main themes of the current Presidency of the Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov on the ENGAGE.EU Board of Rectors. His term has been marked by a number of initiatives aimed at building a community and more actively involving students, academic community and administrative staff in the Alliance’s joint activities. Our university was represented at the Forum by Chief Assist. Dr. Ivan Valchanov, Coordinator of the Alliance’s Dissemination Office, lecturer at the Media and Public Communications Department - UNESCO Chair in Media and Information Literacy and Cultural Policies for Sustainable Development. The other representative of the ENGAGE.EU Alliance was Riana Stryker from Tilburg University, Manager of the ENGAGE.EU Research Community Platform.

Among the Bulgarian participants were Prof. Elena Trencheva, Vice Rector of the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts, representing FilmEU, Lyudmila Gribneva from the International Division of the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, representing BAUHAUS4EU, as well as Bulgarian student volunteers studying in Strasbourg. Their presence outlined the active role of Bulgarian higher education institutions in building stronger and more sustainable European academic communities.

The event provided a platform for representatives of various European university alliances to exchange experiences and ideas with a focus on the best practices for deepening the cooperation, promoting inclusion, increasing the student engagement and strengthening the relations between the universities and their communities. The programme included plenary discussions, joint workshops, a poster session, etc. The Forum brought together over 140 participants who discussed how the European universities can move beyond the scope of projects and become communities with a long-term impact on the students, lecturers, researchers and society.

The event was organized and hosted by the EPICUR alliance and the forum itself reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening the European university cooperation, social impact and innovation in higher education. The topics were focused on fostering a sense of belonging, promoting the brand and organized initiatives, overcoming barriers to mobility, adding value for participants, and building sustainable connections between student communities.

Assoc. Prof. Zornitsa Yordanova, lecturer at the Industrial Business Department, took part in the panel discussion on the Innovation and Technology – The Role of SME`s, Start-Ups and Dual-Use Companies, Relation Between the Innovation and Research held as part of the Industrial Forum at the International Exhibition HEMUS 2026.

In the panel participated representatives from the Center for Defense Innovation at Sofia Tech Park, Wiser Technology, NeuroMorphica, the academic community and the innovation ecosystem in Bulgaria. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Dr. Eng. Georgy Angelov from the Technical University of Sofia.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zornitsa Yordanova’s participation is part of UNWE’s active commitment to the development of the innovation ecosystem in Bulgaria and to strengthening the relation between the science, education and business in the context of accelerated technological transformation.

Among the main topics of discussion were the development of dual-use technologies, the transformation of the innovation cycle under the influence of artificial intelligence, the role of synthetic data and digital twins, as well as the necessity for closer relations between the fundamental scientific research, applied development and business.

Special emphasis was placed on the potential of small and medium-sized enterprises /SME`s/ and start-ups in Bulgaria to actively participate in the AI-driven and deep-tech innovation ecosystem through flexible organizational models, rapid adaptation and effective implementation of the new technologies. The discussion also examined the idea of creating a registry of companies developing dual-use innovations to facilitate better collaboration between the businesses, scientific organizations, and institutions.

The participants outlined the importance of coordination among the science, industry, universities, research organizations and small and medium-sized enterprises /SME`s/ for building a sustainable innovation ecosystem in Bulgaria. A consensus was reached that strengthening the cooperation among these stakeholders is a key factor for the successful development and implementation of high-tech solutions with high added value.

During the forum, emphasis was also placed on the necessity of closer interaction between the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Transformation, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Economy, Investment and Industry and the Ministry of Education and Science to promote the development of deep-tech and dual-use innovations and accelerate technology transfer processes to the business sector.

Student from the UNWE Took Part in the Initiative CEO for a Day

Maria Kotseva, student in the Master’s programme in Business Analysis and Projects at the Industrial Business, Department, participated in the prestigious initiative CEO for a Day, organized by the Council of Women in Business in Bulgaria in partnership with H.E. Andrea Ikic-Böm, Ambassador of Austria to Bulgaria.

With the mentorship and support of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Petya Biolcheva from the Industrial Business Department, one of the top students in her class - Maria Kotseva, participated in the initiative for the second consecutive year.

The programme provides ambitious students with the opportunity to experience real-world management practices by spending a workday side-by-side with top managers from leading companies in the country.

As part of the initiative, our student spent the day with Tsvetanka Mincheva - CEO and Chair of the Management Board of UniCredit Bulbank - closely observing the dynamics of the work process, strategic thinking and responsibilities characteristic of management roles in a major financial institution.

Our University Hosted an International Roundtable As Part of ENGAGE.EU Research Label Project

UNWE hosted an International Roundtable as part of a project under the ENGAGE.EU Research Label initiative, carried out jointly by researchers from Luiss University Rome, La Salle Ramon Llull University Barcelona, and the UNWE. The event brought together lecturers, researchers, Post-Doctoral fellows, Doctoral students and young scholars from several European universities who discussed actual topics related to the digital democracy, gender equality, European policies, innovation, and the challenges facing the modern digital environment.

Among the official guests and participants were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristina Harizanova-Bartos, Vice Dean for Quality and International Cooperation of the Business Faculty, lecturer at the Economics of Natural Resources Department and a member of the ENGAGE.EU team at UNWE, Prof. Dr. Zornitsa Stoyanova, Dean of the Economics of Natural Resources Department, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Georgy Nikolov, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the Management and Administration Faculty and Director of the Institute for Postgraduate Studies at UNWE, and Assoc. The international participation was represented by researchers and young scholars from Luiss University Rome and La Salle Ramon Llull University Barcelona. Among them were Post-Doctoral researcher and Adjunct Professor Flavia Lucenty, Dr. Oliver Elliott, Dr. Mariam Vaziry, Doctoral student Martina Logy, Eoin Phillips, Economic Coordinator for the Smart Society Research Group, Doctoral student Pablo Fiorentiny and Assoc. Prof. Ignasy Medà Calvet.

As part of the programme Eoin Phillips and Flavia Lucenty presented a research paper developed within the framework of the initiative. Dr. Mariam Vaziry also presented her academic research on the project and the Doctoral students Martina Logy and Anna-Maria Nikolaeva introduced the participants to their research related to the roundtable’s thematic areas.

The event took place in an atmosphere of active academic dialogue, exchange of ideas and in-depth discussions with a special emphasis on the role of young researchers, the importance of an interdisciplinary approach and the opportunities that the European academic networks provide for the development of contemporary research in the field of digital transformation and democratic processes.

The Roundtable is the consecutive evidence of the UNWE active role within the ENGAGE.EU alliance and of the university’s establishment as a leading partner in promoting the international academic cooperation, scientific innovation, and the development of the European Research Area.

The Rector Opened the IAEA Regional Peer-to-Peer Workshop on Nuclear Forensics at the UNWE

The UNWE is the host of five-day IAEA Regional Peer-to-Peer Workshop on Nuclear Forensics of the International Atomic Energy Agency /IAEA/. Experts and scientists from all over the world gathered in the Small Conference Hall to discuss specific technical issues in such an extremely important area as nuclear forensics, which deals not only with the analysis of captured nuclear and radioactive materials beyond regulatory control in order to establish their origin, history and route of trafficking, but also with the study of isotope, chemical and physical characteristics, thus supporting investigations and preventing acts of nuclear terrorism.

The meeting was opened by the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitrov Dimitrov, moderator is Dr. Tashiema Ulrich, Research and Development Associate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a prominent nuclear engineer and researcher, recognized for his groundbreaking Doctoral work, with experience working at the International Atomic Energy Agency /IAEA/ in Vienna, Austria. The forum was attended by Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the Nuclear Security Support Center and the Institute for Enhancing Research Capacity in the Field of Nuclear Industry and Nuclear Security and lecturer at the UNWE National and Regional Security Department, and PhD student Georgy Tasev from the National and Regional Security Department.

The Rector Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov welcomed the guests and participants in the forum and presented the UNWE as the oldest and largest business university in Bulgaria and Southeast Europe with 8 Faculties and nearly 20 000 students. He emphasized the importance of the IAEA Regional Meeting for the development of nuclear forensics and the prevention of acts of nuclear terrorism and explained that it is no coincidence that our university is the host of the event. “12 years ago with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency /IAEA/ we established our International Master's Programme in Nuclear Security and many of our international students who graduated from it in Bulgaria already have a successful career in their countries, which is the greatest attestation of the success of the Programme”, pointed out the Rector and outlined that the UNWE has also been designated as the IAEA Cooperation Center in the field of nuclear security. “In recent years, we have also been working on the creation of several more capacity building projects related to the Small Modular Reactors /SMR`s/ and Artificial Intelligence /AI/, as well as on various initiatives with the United States through the Nuclear Security Support Center, which has been designated as an IAEA Cooperation Center," said Prof. Dimitrov. He pointed out the necessity of discussions and cooperation between the academic circles and institutions on the topics of nuclear security, emphasizing that in the past week the UNWE hosted the Annual Regional Conference of the Black Sea Women in Nuclear Network /BSWN/ with the participation of over 60 women working in the field of nuclear security. “Thus, step by step, our university develops as a center of many activities related to the nuclear field, and our students, during their studies in the Master's Programme in Nuclear Security, also study nuclear forensics and disciplines directly related to the nuclear industry and the nuclear sector”, said the Rector in conclusion and emphasized the necessity of funding and special equipment for the preparation and training of highly qualified specialists in the field of nuclear security.

The work of the forum is organized in five days and it is focused on specific topics of nuclear forensics, and in addition to lectures, the programme includes exercises and discussions on technical cases.
