UNWE and Sofia University Will Partner in the Field of the Nuclear Industry and Security

The Institute for Enhancing Research Capacity in the Field of the Nuclear Industry and Nuclear Security /IERCFNINS/ at the UNWE and the Faculty of Geology and Geography at St. Climent Ohridsky University of Sofia signed a Memorandum of Cooperation.   

The agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of IERCFNINS and the Center for Nuclear Security Support, and Prof. D.Sc. Climent Naydenov, Dean of the Faculty of Geology and Geography at St. Climent Ohridsky University of Sofia, during an official meeting held at UNWE in the presence of representatives from both academic communities.

On behalf of UNWE Institute the signing was attended by Chief Assist. Dr. Atanas Dimitrov, Deputy Director for Scientific Research of IERCFNINS, and Doctoral student Georgy Tasev, and the Faculty of Geology and Geography at St. Climent Ohridsky University of Sofia was represented by Chief Assist. Dr. Dimitar Atanasov.

The Memorandum establishes a framework for a strategic partnership aimed at developing and improving the quality of education, research and innovation in the fields of nuclear energy and nuclear security, as well as for preparing and implementing joint projects under the national and European programmes. It provides for cooperation in a number of strategic areas, including:

• Scientific research and capacity building in areas such as clean energy, nuclear engineering and core technologies;
• Application of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity in the energy sector;
• Geological surveys related to the disposal of spent nuclear fuel;
• Geospatial analyses, risk assessment and impact assessment on regional sustainability;
• Development of models for spatial planning and assessment of environmental and regional impacts;
• Research and application of Small Modular reactors /SMRs/;
• Exchange of university lecturers, researchers, and students;
• Organization of joint workshops, seminars and conferences;
• Technology transfer and use of innovative educational tools, including virtual laboratories, simulation software and digital platforms.

The signing of the Memorandum sets the foundation for a long-term partnership in strategically important areas related to the development of the nuclear industry, sustainable energy and the enhancement of expertise in the field of nuclear security.
