Two Days National Conference on the Modern Development of Statistics and Information Technologies

National Scientific Conference on the Modern Development of Statistics and Information Technologies devoted to the International Year of Statistics was held at the Large Conference Hall of the university. The two days Forum was organized by the Statistics and Econometrics Department and in it participated scientists from the UNWE, Dimitar Tsenov Economic Academy – Svishtov, Economic University – Varna, Neofit Rilski South West University – Blagoevgrad, St. Climent Ohridski University – Sofia, Paisii Hilendarski University – Plovdiv as well as representatives of the Bulgarian Academy of Science and National Statistical Institute.

The International Year of Statistics is a serious recognition for the contribution of statistical science to the measurement of the social progress, outlined at the opening of the Forum the Rector of the university Prof. D.Sc. (Econ.) Statty Stattev. He determined the statistics as one of the “eternal subjects” without which no country could be managed. The Rector emphasized on the specific role of the Applied Informatics and Statistics Faculty established 5 years ago and based it also by the fact that “half of the Rector`s team at the university are statisticians”. It is impressive the number of professors at the Faculty, they have approved themselves in the field of science and practice and have their place also in the government of the country, pointed also the Rector.

Sixty are the participants in the Conference who will present 58 reports, evaluated the importance of the Forum the Rector and expressed his hope in its significance.

Statistics is all around us – from foods we eat to forecasting the weather and readiness for action in extraordinary situations, pointed out Prof. Dr. Kamelia Stefanova, Dean of the Applied Informatics and Statistics Faculty. She outlined the three main objectives of the international initiative: enhancement of the confidence and awareness of the power and impact of statistics on all aspects of society; promotion of statistics as a profession, especially among young people; stimulation of the creativity and development of statistical science.

The importance of statistics grows, the application of statistical methods and models is wide in many areas, pointed also Prof. Dr. Veselka Pavlova, Vice Rector and Head of the Statistics and Econometrics Department. She outlined the good interaction between the three Departments of the Faculty in the intensive scientific activity.

Conferences are the essence of the research and that`s why we expect very good results and creative spirit in discussions, pointed out Prof. D.Sc. (Econ.) Valentin Kisimov, Vice Rector and Head of the Information Technologies and Communications Department. He examined the development of the young professionals as he outlined that there had been 15 Doctoral students at the Department.

Mathematics is closely related to the statistics, mathematical language is the first condition for understanding of all models, emphasized Prof. D.Sc. (Maths) Nikolai Bozhinov, Head of the Mathematics Department.

High assessment for the Conference was given also by the representatives of the Departments on Statistics from the Economic Institute – Varna and Dimitar Tsenov Economic Academy – Svishtov.

The work of two days Conference continued with the plenary report on the Challenges of Population Aging by Prof. Dr. Todor Kaloyanov from the Statistics and Econometrics Department. In the three sections of the Conference were discussed the following topics: Methodology of Statistical Research, Applied Statistical Research and Modern Achievements of Applied Informatics and Communication Technologies in the Business.
