UNWE Students Won Scholarships by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants

The students from the UNWE Iva Ivanova and Amelia Filipova won scholarships named after the Presidents of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants /ICPA/ - Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dobrev and Prof. Dr. Stancho Cholakov. The scholarships are awarded to students distinguished by high academic achievements, participation in national and international forums with individual papers, students with achievements and prizes.

At the solemn ceremony in the Hall of ICPA Prof. Dr. Snezhana Basheva, member of the Management Board of ICPA and Head of the UNWE Accounting and Analysis Department, declared: "We are attending a very nice event. The initiative for establishing these two scholarships came from the Management Board of ICPA. They are named after two of the most elite Presidents of our institution - Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dobrev and Prof. Dr. Stancho Cholakov. The awarding of these scholarships sends three signals to the public. On the one hand, the ICPA as an institution shows that it wants to attract the best, the brightest, the most knowledgeable students by funding their education. On the other hand, the UNWE as the winner in this competition shows that the programmes offered to students at the University are the best. The third signal is that the students themselves who entered this competition show that they have desire to work in the field of auditing and dedicate their lives to this profession".

Prof. Dr. Tsvetana Stoyanova, Vice Rector for Institutional and Business Cooperation and Student Policies of UNWE, greeted the participants in the event and outlined: "It is a great pleasure for me to be here among you as an expression of the good relations between the University of National and World Economy and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants. The occasion is very nice indeed, because we award two of our students. The distinguished students should be proud because they are the first who receive the scholarships established by the ICPA Management Board named after two of the most eminent chartered accountants. The good relations between the UNWE and ICPA date back for a long time and the data from the end of last year show that half of the new chartered accountants have graduated from the Faculty of Finance and Accounting of our University which is an attestation of the high quality of education and means that the ICPA appreciates this quality by recognizing most of the exams that our students take at the University".

"The students who will receive these first two scholarships that we established should be proud," said Boyko Kostov and added: "Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dobrev, in addition to the President of ICPA, is the second Rector of UNWE and perhaps the first Bulgarian who has defended a dissertation in accounting in Germany. He has great merits for the development of both theory and practice in our country and it is not an accident that he is considered as patriarch of accounting thought in Bulgaria. Prof. Dr. Stancho Cholakov was the second President of ICPA, he was also Rector of the University of Economics in Varna, he was Minister of Finance and Governor of the BNB - both of them were outstanding personalities for their era, great professionals. Our idea is to promote these two personalities and to show by the establishment of these two scholarships our attitude towards higher education in accounting and auditing by supporting students who show excellent results in this field. By awarding these scholarships we would also like to motivate students to pursue a career in the auditing profession, which is the pinnacle of the accounting profession as a level of professionalism.
