UNWE Was Awarded the Honorary Badge of Sofia by the Mayor Yordanka Fandakova

On Bulgarian Enlighteners Day at a solemn ceremony in Sofia City Art Gallery, the Mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova and the Chairperson of the Sofia Municipal Council Georgy Georgiev awarded to the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov the Honorary Badge of Sofia on the occasion of the 100th jubilee celebrated by the University in 2020.

"There is a lot of meaning and symbolism in the fact that today - on Bulgarian Enlighteners Day - we award the Honorary Badge to you, the deserving citizens of Sofia. A day when we honour the Bulgarian enlighteners, bookmen, revolutionaries, people striving for education, spiritual values, people who change our society and make us better", outlined the Mayor Yordanka Fandakova.

During the awarding ceremony the host of the event the actor Vladimir Penev pointed out that the UNWE is a leader in Bulgarian economics and an integral part of European education.

"It is a great honour for me to be here at this event among so many prominent Bulgarians who have given a lot for the spirit, for the culture, for the sport and for the whole society. As a Rector of UNWE I accept the award on behalf of more than a thousand enlighteners at our university. UNWE celebrated its 100 anniversary last year and we hope that as the capital Sofia it continues to grow without getting older", said the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov.

Among the people who were awarded the Honorary Badge of Sofia are also Vanya Kastreva, Head of Regional Department of Education - Sofia-city, G.S. Rakovsky – 1925 National Community Center on the occasion of its 95th anniversary, Prof. Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music on the occasion of its 100th jubilee celebrated in 2020, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Bulgaria H. E. Bea tan Tusher.  

The title Honorary Citizen of Sofia for 2021 was awarded to public figures who have contributed to the development of the spirit and glory of the capital Sofia over the years: Prof. Margarita Vaklinova, Marius Donkin, Prof. Milena Mollova, Haygashot Aghasyan, Prof. Anry Kulev, Prof. Nikola Vladov, Kamelia Todorova, Maxim Eshkenayi, Dimitar Marinov, Vasil Banov, Prof. Boris Chendov /posthumously/, the first Olympic champions of Bulgaria in rhythmic gymnastics - the girls from the Bulgarian ensemble Simona Dyankova, Madlen Radukanova, Laura Traats, Stefany Kiryakova, Erika Zafirova and Kamelia Stoilova, their coaches Vessela Dimitrova and Mihaela Maevska and the President of the Bulgarian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation Iliana Raeva as well as the first Olympic champion for Bulgaria in women's boxing Stoyka Krasteva and her coach Borislav Georgiev.

The Honorary Badge of Sofia was awarded to Prof. Dr. Tsvetomir Dimitrov and Anatoli Iliev - one of the main engines in the initiative Sofia - European Capital of Sport and Chairman of the Bulgarian Sports Association for Children and Youth at Risk.
