Lecture by Prof. Laszlo Andor, Doctor Honoris Causa of UNWE

The Road to the New European Commission was the topic of the lecture delivered by Prof. László Andor, Doctor Honoris Causa of UNWE (2014), to the second year students of the professional field of Economics with English language teaching.

Prof. Andor spoke to students about the complicated political and institutional mechanisms to elect members of the European Commission (EC), the ways the EC works with the European Parliament and the other European structures. The lecturer examined the most important issues that the EC should solve and commented terms as the defence of the European way of life, etc.

Prof. Andor shared his personal impressions of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kristalina Georgieva, UNWE graduate, who was his colleague in the European Commission (2010 – 2014).

The students asked the guest-lecturer how the applicants for European commissioners prepare for their hearings, whether and how the balance between the number of men and women in the EC is observed, which are the strongest lobbies in the European institutions, etc.

During the lecture

Prof. Andor met with the Rector of UNWE Prof. D.Sc.(Econ.) Statty Stattev and both discussed actual issues of higher education and science.

The Rector awarded to the guest-lecturer Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of his lecture and a booklet devoted to Prof. Andor - part of the series entitled Doctor Honoris Causa of UNWE (in the picture below).

Prof. László Andor is a Hungarian economist, lecturer at the Corvinus University of Budapest. Currently he is a Secretary-General of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS). In the period 2010 – 2014 he has been European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion. Since 2005 to 2010 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) as representative of the Czech Republic, Republic of Croatia and the Slovak Republic.
