Distance learning has been introduced at the University of National and World Economy in the academic year 1997/1998. In PHARE project was developed the first Bulgarian university master's program in "International Economic Relations", which is fully realized through modern technology for distance learning. Subsequently other programs on international projects have been developed.

Distance learning is the most flexible and adaptable to the budget of the time of working people, mothers caring for their children, those living in remote locations, to disadvantaged persons and groups with special needs. It is equal to the full-time study on the content of the curricula, awards cash credits and diplomas.

It is implemented by the Distance Learning Center in Sofia and regional centers in Haskovo and Plovdiv.
